Yea, it's *insert four letter word that begins with 'f' here* awesome. In fact, it's THE BEST handheld game out on the market right now and I say that having played pretty much the best the PSP and DS have to offer.
It's essentially Grand Theft Auto 3 with a brand new story and missions, better mission structure, improved camera control (since they have to accompany the fact that there's only one analog), motorcycles, and the best (and I seriously mean THE BEST) multiplayer modes you'll play on any of the handhelds. The graphics are top notch (and just a hair below that of the console version with only a few framerate drops), the sound is crisp and clear (and you can add in your own CUSTOM TRACKS), the new pedestrian commentary is hilarious (my favorite is "I told my mom I had an Oedipus complex"), and the new weather effects (namely SNOW and fog) are all excellent editions. The only downside is that the game uses GTA3's crappy aiming system where about 2/5 times you'll accidentally lock onto the person that's not trying to kill you.
It's worth the $50. Seriously. If you own a psp or thinking about buying one, now's the time to do it. I'm about 15 hours in and I'm not even 30% complete with the game.
It has all the shortcomings of the series. Terrible aiming and firefights, unbalanced gameplay, and blocky graphics.
But oh man. It's GTA. In the palm of your hand. The whole thing is there. The sandbox gameplay, the alive city, the radio stations, the ssaterical sense of humor, great writting and voice acting. It's amazing to hop in a car and just drive arond and realise that they've put it all in a tiny UMD. It's got better graphics and gameplay than the orginal GTA III did. The city is the same (with some significant differences because of the different time period), but now there's motorcycles, and more optional missions, and a compleatly new story.
The game is damn hard though. Expect to replay missions 5 to ten times in some cases. Also, the city isn't open to you at the start. You still have to unlock the two other islands.
Surprisingly, the lack of a second analong stick doesn't hurt the game at all. It's a little hard to cotroll on foot because the Analog numb sucks, but it's not life crippling. Driving is spot on though.
Recomended if your a fan of the series. It's not perfict, but what GTA is?

Not interested in GTA.
"What if like...there was an exact copy of you somewhere, except they're the opposite gender, like you guys could literally have a freaky friday moment and nothing would change. Imagine the best friendship that could be found there."
Because I wanted to say that, despite now being the time to get a PSP.

Even with those reasons, I still don't find it enough to buy a PSP.
Nobody said it was a reason to RUN OUT AND BUY A $200 SYSTEM. I simply said if you're *thinking* about it, now is a good time.
Also, anyone who said the PSP would destroy the DS is an idiot as Nintendo is firmly rooted in the handheld market to even be considered in trouble when it comes to business. You can't compare the PSP to the DS because they are two vastly different systems and each has their own reason to warrant a purchase. People who want games and JUST games get the DS. People who want a portable multimedia device that can run movies, music, games, and emulators (I'm playing Chrono Trigger as we speak) buy the PSP.
I own both and I'm proud of both so I really don't care what people have to say about their shortcomings. The DS could really use some games LONGER than 4 hours (and a string attachment for the stylus because I keep dropping mine) and the PSP could have some more rpg's (thankfully Legend of Heroes and PoPoLoCrois are fixing this) so I'll see what the future has in store for both.
