    120 fps? Are you kidding?

PS3 to run at 120 fps?
It's possible, says Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi; all that's needed is a TV capable of displaying it.

Coming soon to an Internet message board near you: waves of more-hardcore-than-thou posters referring to any game running at 60 frames per second (fps) as "a slideshow."

Appearing at the Tokyo International Digital Conference on Thursday to talk about the technological capabilities of the PlayStation 3 and the Cell processor, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi said he expects the PS3 to be capable of running games at a stunning 120 fps, according to a report in The Nikkei BP.

Never mind that even newer TVs aren't capable of refreshing the screen 120 times in a single second. Kutaragi said that when new technology comes to market, he hopes to have the PS3 ready to take advantage of it.

As for the Cell chip at the heart of the PS3, Kutaragi also had high hopes for its future beyond gaming. Taking High Definition TV as an example, he said that the Cell chip could take advantage of the technology in many ways, such as displaying newspapers in their actual size, showing multiple high definition channels on the screen at once, and video conferencing. He emphasized that the Cell can be used to decode more than 10 HDTV channels simultaneously, and it can also be used to apply effects such as rotating and zooming.

Later, he introduced the idea of a Cell cluster server that operates with 16 units, each consisting of eight Cell chips running at 2.5Ghz. That would total a processing power of 25.6 teraflops. Kutaragi also outlined plans to shrink the chip from the current 90 nanometer process to a 65 nanometer process in the future, and eventually down to a 45 nanometer process.

Sounds pretty extreme. If you ask me, if this is all that's cracked up to be, I think Cell'd really shine as a high-end PC/Server CPU.

Sweet, now they will just have to have an actual game to display this on right? Let me see here, there is................................... MGS4..... and.... and.... okay never mind, the only real game for ps3 is MGS4. Is it just me or does it seem that PS3 has less back up than the 360?

The 360 is coming out next month, we don't know when the PS3 will yet.

I think its just you? What back up does the 360 have other then Gears of war?

....really they don't even have gears of war when you think about the fact that it will be released on the PS3 also, and it will look better on the PS3.

I am going for 360 first, due to Oblivion.

I know touting stats is the console makers' way of selling us on a given system, but what does fps mean to me as a consumer? Are we talking about fluidity of motion? Does fps have anything to do with the amount of moving graphics possible on screen or is it just the level of detail for what's currently displayed? For instance, if "hero" is walking in a woodland area, am I going to see a breeze rustling leaves on the ground, grasses and branches swaying along with his extra-smoothe walk animation, or just the extra-smoothe walk?

                    FPS = Frames Per Second

The higher the FPS, the smoother the game will animate. I'm sure you've seen a game with low FPS, where any fast movement or complexities on screen seemed to make things choppy.

Anyway, I also say that 60FPS is good enough. To me, things look pretty smooth, even in games like F-Zero GX. Going from 30FPS to 60FPS is a noticeable difference. I don't think going to 120FPS will be nearly as noticeable.

60 is good, but It'd be great to see games run even smoother. Not 120 FPS smooth, but maybe 70-90 or something, I think 120's a little too extreme.

I concur, which is why I think Cell could be put to better use as a PC-related dealie, which they're doing anyway.

                          It's just you.

Xbox 360 is coming out in like, a month. PS3, it could be years. Of course there are going to be more games for Xbox 360.

Even with that fact, the PS3 STILL has better support.

Well, I don't know about console games, but I know some PC games jump up to 70-90. I think I remember World of Warcraft running soemwhere around 80FPS a few times. To be honest, I didn't see any difference from 60FPS. Though maybe my monitor just wasn't meant to run more than 60FPS.

This is a dumb article. The frame rate will vary depending on what kind of graphics the game is pushing.
