    Rhymin' and Stealin'

I am working on my game, and cannot help but steal the names of magic/summons from Final Fantasy. It's so hard not to. I remember reading a post someone made saying that you should try to be more creative than Fire 1, Fire 2, Fire 3. But I can't help but use these. If someone were to play a RPG Maker game, would you care if names of magic/summons/items were stolen?

Use HOLY HELLFIRE WRATHY BURNY STUFF 1, HOLY HELLFIRE WRATHY BURNY STUFF 2, etc.

Whenever I need creative names I just go look up a word in the thesorous on microsoft word.

      Fire gets:
      Flames
      Bonfire
      conflagration
      combustion
      inferno

        Re: Rhymin' and Stealin'

I did have to make an active effort to avoid copying names of stuff in my game. Those spells in my game were: Flare, Superflare, Megaflare, Ultraflare. I stuck with the Super-, Mega-, Ultra- prefix system to stronger versions of things rather than 2, 3, 4 as a suffix.

As for if I would care if names of magic/summons/items were stolen in a game, I'd say not really. But it would slightly lower my opinion of the game because it would show some lack of creativity by the game designer. But assuming the game had a cool story with original characters and whatnot I'd hardly even notice a few borrowed names.

I avoid the Aristotelian elements all together.

Insted of Fire Earth Air and Water Elemental Forces, The Clean Underwear Quest uses Excremental Forces like Poop Magic, Pee Magic, Frenchness, and Rhetoric (for Politicians).

The system treats them as "Elements" so I can set weaknesses and such, but at least nobody can call it derivative.

I did have one Fire spell called "You're Fired."

Anyway, consider changing the rules if you are concerned about playing within them.

          It works for me!

          Peace.

AWWWWW! all of your elements took off 99999999 HP from me. I seem to have something looking like overkill above me.

I thought of an easy way to make unique(well, not after everyone reads this and uses it) and cool sounding spell names. Derive the first few letters from the specified elements in a foreign language and add a good suffix. For example, here's a spell name in my RPG Plasma Dreams.

Gelo(water I believe in Italian) + jin(sounds cool) = the ice spell Gelojin!

                The possiblities are near endless.

Just use http://thesaurus.reference.com/ . The only reason they were EVER called Fire 1/2/3 etc. is because the transalation for the earlier ones were terrible. Need I remind you of the spoony bard. Combine two words if you need to. It's actually quite easy...

Off the top of my head-
Fire- Flame, Volcano, Explosive, Hell Flare/Hell Fire
Ice - Frost, Glacier Bomb, Icicle Plunge, Ice Blast
Bolt - (lightning is harder, I've learned), Thunderbolt, Thunderstorm, Thunder Flare
                  etc.

edit: Also, think of the Visual Effects first.

If I sat there enough and thought about it, I could probably come up with new names, but they'd seem kind of lame.

As for weapons, I have a somewhat hard time. I usually do fine with swords, shields, armor, and spears, but always have a hard time coming up with good axe and staff names. Any suggestions?

Dunno about axe, but staves you could do stuff like Stick, Thorn, Oak, Enchanted, etc.
