Played the demo on OPM. This may be because it's just a demo but it's not that thrilling. At all really.
BIG FAT MEH.
GODDAMMIT, SQUARE, GET YOUR **** TOGETHER.

Thinking of buying it.
I have the first one.
I don't really like the new look (Musashi), but it's alright.
I don't know if this one has the same spirit of the first game. Brave Fencer Musashi is probably one of the best sleepers on the psx.

It doesn't feel like the original. It feels like a big step back. But maybe the demo just sucks. It didn't even let me finish, I was up to the Vaporoid boss and suddenly the game stopped with a big "COMING SOON!" thing.
What a lousy way to show off your new game though. The hero opens his mouth and the worst dubbing ever is revealed. Not that the original Musashi had great dubbing - it was pretty laughable, but that was part of its Texan/Valley girl/"Hey have you seen Leno?" charm!!
And wow. WHAT LEVEL DESIGN. One long path - a long gauntlet - of the SAME TWO ENEMY TYPES over and over and OVER AND OVER. And how do you beat them? Press Square over and over. And over. AND OVER. You COULD press Triangle for the slower, stronger attack but why do that? Use the faster combo instead and eventually, after four quick hits, he begins using the strong attack. Why bother mapping the strong attack to the Triangle button in the first place?? Oh, you could also use three diversionary special attacks if you wanna see what they look like. Once.
I hope hope HOPE the demo doesn't reflect what the rest of the game will be like but... isn't that kind of what demos are for anyway...?! To see what the game'll be like? From these impressions, Samurai Legend Musashi will be a far cry from the sleeper that Brave Fencer was. At best, it'll probably be just like the original with better graphics. Uh, neat, I guess.
So, yeah. Square. C'mon. Cut this out.

I liked Mega Man Legends and the Cel-Shade is great but.....
Musashi had Purple hair, not Brown.
I'll have to hope that I can rent this, I'm broke.
Again. :(

Taken from an old IGN interview:
IGN: If the only thing remaining is the name, why did you choose to make a sequel as opposed to a brand new game?
Yoshimoto: We found that the player having two swords to fight is an attractive feature for the game. In order to use the dual sword feature, we decided to use the character.
IGN: Does Musashi always use two swords?
Musashi is a famous Japanese sword fighter called Musashi Miyamoto. He's famous for using two swords.
You can blame unfamiliarity on that.:p

It's not a bigass sword it's an oar. YEAH. Like the thing you use to row BOATS with.
...WTF?!?!
I assume you eventually get a Lumina-esque sword to replace that stupid thing but...c'mon.

After watching the video for both intro and gameplay, I am looking forward to playing this game.
It looks like a fun game that will be like "Megaman Legends" (Which is my favorite megaman series ever!!!)

Furthermore, O.P.M.'s demos suck balls.

If most demos from OPM suck, then why are we automatically saying the game will suck too?
I want to hear opinions from people who've picked up the game already and are playing it now, damnit!
And not just comments on the graphics. We understand that it's pretty and stylistic already!! What about the gameplay and other elements?!

Square's been trying to coast on presentation a lot lately. They've been bitten by the SaGa bug.
SirTMagus
03-19-2005, 03:33 AM
Den, all demos for OPM suck because they're usually for crappy fourth-tier games like Spy Fiction or Tak and the Ultimate Butt Plug or some **** no one could possibly care about. Every once in a blue moon they have a demo for a game WITH AN ACTUAL NAME. Musashi was one of those names and it just happened to disagree with me. I gave my reasons why earlier.
Square shat on me, I **** on Square.
*GIANT POOP*
Mainstream reviews are giving it more credit but not by much. Main consensus seems to be to rent it.
So, yo Square: quit with the mediocrity already.
Frankly, I've had enough of these negatively-biased opinions spawning from the demo. The game has finally arrived at a store nearby, so I'm going to pick it up and post my reflections and opinions later.

if i have any money left over, i'm going to pick it up.
Alright, I managed to get my hands on the game and am a few hours in.
As some of you mentioned, yes, the animation is very well done. I'm not going to go on about that aspect, though. On to the flow of battle:
The battles can get pretty hectic. Fortunately, Musashi is capable of learning a large number of useful moves to deal damage, and with style. This can be done via the new technique-learning system, which has improved over the original game's system. This time, Musashi focuses and observes the opponent's technique. Once the opponent is about to hit Musashi, at the hit of a button, and after inputting the on-screen command once time pauses, he will learn the opponent's ability for life. The moves I've seen so far are pretty cool and/or effective. I also like how the enemies fall to pieces depending on how you 0wnzz them. Very cool effects. Such can also be said about Musashi's beautiful-yet-deadly special attacks.
In the case of the voices, they possess a similarity to the original game. Which certainly isn't a bad thing. Unfortunately, Musashi's voice isn't exactly the best. His VA is the same person that did Axl in MMX7. Otherwise, I haven't had any problems with the voices. A number of them make me laugh, though.
The camera is controled by the left analog stick. It's pretty fair. It can be a slight problem during select boss battles, but thankfully, the camera can be locked and centered at the hit of R3.
Many elements from the original game return, like the rescuing of the villagers, the slight health loss when you fall into water, the appraising, etc. However, Musashi is no longer capable of sleeping out in the open.
Two more things to note are the carrying and experience features. During select parts of the game, you'll have to carry damsels in distress, wierd creatures and even enemies. When carrying someone while under attack, you can either toss whoever you're carrying in the air and slice up the attacker in time to catch whoever before (s)he hits the ground, which is very cool, or you can take whoever you're carrying and beat the crap out of the assailant with him/her, which is just plain awesome. Surprisingly, the latter is extremely effective and blows the enemy clear across the screen.
Now, in the case of the experience, as you hack through enemies, you gradually gain EXP. Once you get enough, you gain a level and choose which attributes you want to boost, making for a bit of customizability. Nothing overly complex.
Overall, I'm enjoying the game quite a bit. It may not be the best game on the planet, but it's certainly enjoyable. I look forward to continuing the game and seeing what else it has to offer.
Furthermore, don't rag on the Great Oar. It may look like a plank, but it's dead-0wnage. :jack2

Because a samurai who moves like he wears flypaper shoes would make a cool game.

Not until you get a certain something later on, if you consider his game begning movements sluggish.

Furthermore, the game really takes off by the third chapter.

I thought the controls in the original Musashi were awful.

There is a problem when the only solution to a jumping puzzle is to simply be as close to the edge as possible every time.
The controls feel similar to the original Maximo's controls. Rather, the Maximo demo's controls. I never got the game.
