    Just got FFXI

How late am I? A lot late. I'm on the PC version, dunno whether or not PS2 and PC players can play together.

Some people were supposed to give me a world pass, but that isn't happening yet.

In the meantime, if a decent amount of people play and have a world suggestion or could possible donate a pass, awesome.

If that happens, I'll make a second character for those bums who haven't gotten on AIM yet.

    Thanks.

No reason to suggest a good world to you. SE decided to randomly choose a world for you. Which is pretty much why there are world passes.

Anyway, PS2 and PC people can play together, along with people in other countries, including Japan. Yep, you're all playing this together, so expect to see a lot of "遅すぎ! 何やってたのよ" as you play.

I thought there was some kind of automatic translator. How could you communicate with people who type in a different language?

It only translates the built-in quick messages, like "Lx Whatever looking for group", and "Attack Target". If you type something in manually, everyone who doesn't speak the same language won't know what you're saying.

That's kinda stupid. Makes the ability to group with foreigners far less appealing.

Actually, knowing a little bit of Japanese made for a good time with an all Japanese party one time.

But a lot of times I get the impression from Japanese that we're all idiot Americans.

As far as a server goes, I'd say Midgardsormr if you want to play with me and several other people who used to come here (And still do, Omni plays on there). BUT, Midgard I hear is one of the most expensive (in-game currency-wise) to play on. The Auction Houses are all ****ed up because of price gouging and a bad gil-farming/gil-seller problem. But I've never played on another server, so don't take my word for it.

And I can get you a world pass easy, if you want it.

And yes, PC and Playstation players play on the same server. It's cross-platform.

What are your plans for race/job?

              Gleume, you are uber.

Basically, I've picked up on how to act from other MMO games in general. I think the mog house is an excellent idea, I love how you can customize them.

I play Runescape, which has a farming feature in which some plants take 2-3 hours to grow, haven't done that often, but if you want me to on here I could do eet.

Ooh, and how's the fishing? I was going through the intro and some guy was catching all types of carp.

Currently, I'd love to play for hours and hours, but I'm going to look for a map of San D'Oria(I think I spelled that right) first since I got uber lost there last night.

My current character is on Bismarck for my rl friends, Elvaan Monk.
I'm planning to have two characters, maybe even 3, I just dunno where to put them yet.

That girlfriend thing stinks. I value my loved one and my education over any MMORPG, this could change.

Sides, she's always on Runescape and Gaia Online.

when glueme said farming, he ment waiting hours and hours for a Notorious Monster to spawn and then hope to god that you are the one that claims it. the mobs in ffxi drop junk for gil.

and hes serious too, unless you are totally hardcore and dont mind waiting hours to get a party only to have someone leave and then have to wait longer just for a couple thousand xp, this game might not be for you.

if you want a broader idea of what the endgame of this is like you can ask in this section of the pav george bush cocain quest game forum

                  Re: Just got FFXI

                  Oh here we go...

I was corrupted by FFXI a long time ago, but I'll take Gloomy's advice and be a bit more specific, since from November to March I had at least 40 days of playtime on...I wish I could get that back. -_-

                  1. Get Rank 5 as soon as possible so you don't look like a n00b. I don't like inviting anyone
Rank is really only important after you get to level 30. However, try to get up to Rank 3 before you get any of the advanced jobs. People look at rank more than anything else when choosing a party, and if you take a Rank 3 DRK into Valkurm, you're going to get a party a lot faster than a Rank 1 Advanced Class.

                  2. Prepare to farm. I'm not talking wussy WoW farming. I'm talking hours upon hours of camping and such.
I farmed with Marlwolf and split the profits, it made things quite easy. You can also try to find a unique monster like Jaggedy-Eared Jack (level 7, dropped a 500k charm when I played) but the drop rate is low and he only spawns every 1-2 hours.

                  3. Use the correct race for a given job. I was an excellent Galka RDM/BLM
but I had to sink several million gil into my character before he even reached
level 30 and even then I was only as good as an above average Taru mage.
I repeat this message. DO NOT USE GALKAS AS MAGES, they're terrible unless you have millions of gil to shell out on useless equipment that will only bring you up to the level of a retarded Taru with useless equipment. Let me break this down in actual comparison from my experience.

Taru BLM - level 30 (me)
Hume BLM - level 30 (other dude)

I had 400k+ worth of equipment giving me +22 INT, and with my natural INT bonus over him EACH spell did over 15-25 damage more than the other BLM's spell.

Do not be a Taru monk, it won't work.

                  4. Prepare to wait for a potentially long time for PTs if you're anything but a PLD, WHM, BLM or BRD. PT dynamics are very rigid in structure
and if you're a damage dealer you're not looking at a lot of invites unless
you have expensive equipment as there is a lot of competition.
                  Parties 10-30: Tank/Healer/4 Damage Classes
Parties 30+: PLD/WHM/RDM/BLM/DRK/THF (That's basically it, unfortunately) Don't be a RNG unless you have tons of gil and all the +1 Bows, or you can't compete.
Parties 60+: THFs get thrown out because DRKs can now Trick Attack.

                  5. Don't screw around with subjobs:
Yes. Do not be a MNK/BLM.

PLD/WAR The only useful Paladin Class
WHM/BLM I'd say WHM/SMN is useless unless you have all the summons.
BLM/WHM (I do NOT suggest BLM/RDM, you lose out on WHM abilities that can help the party invaluably. Not to mention Manaburst/Curaga)
RDM/BLM (WHM is possible, but not the practical..)
BRD/WHM The only useful Bard class.
NIN/WAR You will not get parties if you do anything other than NIN/WAR
DRK/THF You put a main THF out of business at level 60, so it's what you should be past then if you're a Dark.
DRG/WAR or DRG/THF or DRG/WHM (Oddly enough.) DRG/WHM does not work. I played one to level 35, the Heal Breath is horrible compared to the elemental breath.
SMN/WHM ONLY thing a summoner should be.
BST/WHM Only if you're soloing, otherwise then go WAR.

                  6. Use the weapon your job is most suited for. You can level up your skill in
another weapon later. No WAR should ever have anything but a Great Axe
until they're subbing NIN, then you alternate between that and double axes.
If you're a WAR and you want to be a DRG, do not use a Spear as a WAR, as Gloomy says. However, a WAR can use an Axe and Shield if he's going to be a Paladin since his Axe skill is still an A (And the difference between A and A+ doesn't matter till level 50.)

So, don't be silly and give your character weapons that they have D skills in, but you can still switch it up a little if you're being a tank. I prefer to not use a Great Axe till I get Double Swing at level 25 because the delay on the great axe is so high.

                  7. Don't be a jerk. At low level PTs are plentiful (sort of..) but after
you hit level 50 people start remembering your name and it can get
hard to level a job if you have a bad reputation. alternately, it can
be easier to level a less popular job if you have a good reputation.
Indeed. I met some Rank 7 guys while levelling my Bard in Qufim and they took me from level 20 to level 32 in about 8 hours of gaming. It's almost silly how efficient people can be when they trust you and you do your job correctly. Don't get ****ed off if someone tells you to Cure them, it's your job to keep the party running smooth and if you have the ability, then use it.

                  8. Know your PT role. This is related to the subjob thing. Every job
has a role in the PT and it essential that you know how to do it well.
You will not last if you don't know your role.

                  9. Unless you're a BST/WHM prepare to be unable to solo anything that'll
give you EXP at about level 10-20 depending on the job. At level 60 my
Galka PLD could solo EP, but it took a long time and was entirely pointless.
Virtually the only class that can solo for EXP is the BST/WHM. This is a party game, and until you have a level 60 RDM/NIN, you're not going to be hunting hard prey alone. If you hate parties, don't even play the game.

                  10. Use food.
                  To start out--
Attackers: Meat Mithkabobs (+5 STR, +22% ATK for 30 Minutes)
Mages: Apple Pies (+25 MP, +4 INT, +1 MP/Tick when you Heal)

                  11. Signet is your friend.
It's the ONLY way you can get crystals, so always have it cast on you.

                  12. JP players dislike being examined.. Well, they dislike NA players in general.
A JP PT can be a wonderful machine, if you can get in one, though. Not all of
the JP players are awesome, but they are definitely on a higher tier in general.
The examination thing is BS, but you generally want to ask a JP player before you look at their gear. To get in a party with JP players, put "JP OK!" or something like that in your comments and LIST why they should pick you up.

For instance, I got in a party with two NINs tanking and we took no damage for about 2 hours, and netted 10k XP. I got in because I put this:

                  "JP PT OK! ^_^
                  INT +22, <Current Equipment>
                  <Apple Pie +1>"

If they see you're maxing your classes prime stat, using good food, and using cute emoticons, they'll know you're playing the game seriously.

Also, JP players have trouble with common attackers joining parties because it's much, much harder to initiate a skillchain with the language barrier. So, keep that in mind, and put your Macros in the Translation so they know what move you're using.

I know this all sounds very limiting, but the sooner you get with the program
the more fun you'll have in the long run. No one likes to have a "gimp" in thier
PT. I've done a Hume to above 25 in like every job, a Galka PLD to 64 and
Galka RDM to 55 before I quit for good so I have a bit of experience to empart.
Hehe, Gloomy, you really took that game to town after I quit.

The joy in this game comes from being a good player and when everyone
does thier job it can be very satisfying to chain ITs like they're Ts and although the players had matured the second time I got into the game a few months ago with my RDM, there was still plenty of arrogent n00bs in Valkurm Dunes.
Let me explain this. An IT (Incredibly Tough) monster can net you up to 200 XP max, but if you defeat another monster that is above a "Even Match" you get an Experience Chain.

The point is to be extremely efficient so that you can get a XP chain of 5 or greater so you can maximize your XP.

This is how it normally looks when you scan around:

Excellent JP Party: 200/240/260/280/300 XP then Rest
                  Decent Party: 200/220/160 Rest
                  Terrible Party: 200 Rest

Do not let people stop getting monsters after your first IT if you have the strength to fight another one. While the terrible party is resting and gathered 200 XP, the good JP party has just netted about 1,100.

Ooh, and how's the fishing? I was going through the intro and some guy was catching all types of carp.
I bought all fishing gear, and tried to start out. It took me about 6 hours to get to level 6 fishing. 6 hours of casting over and over and over again in the same spot. This is why the game is plagued with bots that fish for you...but only the Americans get caught.

I imagine Gloomy has this topic down, but if you need an alternate view, I'd be happy to help you along your loooooonnnnnnnnggggg journey in Vana'Diel.

                    Re: Just got FFXI

Yeah, I got yelled at by some JP dude before. He had all Coral Armor and looked pretty rad. I just think it's BS, since if you REALLY don't like it, you can go into the options and turn the message of "_____ Examines You" off if you want too.

If your DRG friend had all of his Ancient Armor, that's probably why. With DRG/WHM, the heal breath only goes off if you are below 1/4th your HP, but with the armor it will heal anyone below 1/2. It makes a big difference, but I couldn't see myself getting a party consistantly from 1-75 going DRG/WHM.

I never had a problem SC'ing/Magic Bursting with the JP either, but a lot of them complained to me that we Americans couldn't count to 2, so I thought I'd point it out.

Oh no, stuff I have to reply to!
Get Rank 5 as soon as possible so you don't look like a n00b. I don't like inviting anyone
over level 50 who is less than Rank 5 as it reflects on how lazy the player might be.
Of course, getting Rank 5 involves going on tedious missions, and I didn't like that. Besides, how can you call a L50 player "lazy"?
I think the mog house is an excellent idea, I love how you can customize them.
Shame you can't invite people inside them to show off your cool pad. Not without taking a snapshot or two and e-mailing it to them.

...I'd rather not comment on anything else about FFXI. You'd be reading it all day. I'll just say what I did enjoy.

                      The Mithra.
                      The graphics and environments.
                      The music (mostly in towns).
Important missions play out kinda like cutscenes.
Riding chocobos (though aquiring one is an absolute pain).

...That's pretty much all I liked.

                        Re: Just got FFXI

A kind player offered me a bronze top of sorts, all classes, level 1 gear.

Also gave me a bind spell to sell... thanked him, ran, sold the spell, and tried to get a decent hand to hand weapon at the Auction House in San D'Oria on Bismarck. I see a weapon in my level range. Cesta, I believe. I bid 269 gold, all my current cash. I proceed to get pwnt... well because 269 is like a 1/4th of what a Cesta costs, I guess. Since some sold for between 700-1000 gold. I can't believe a level 1 weapon is that much.o_O

I haven't partied yet, I'm trying to get my basic levels done. Level 2 from killing Ding Bats, Worms, and Rabbits. I'm on a quest to find 3 sheep's wool for the tanner Mithra, and I was told to stay far from sheep until level 5, I find that quite amusing since sheep seem so docile.

I like this game so far. The fact that you can wait for rare monster spawns is cool. I mean, in PSO BB, piping was gone so you basically had to do runs upon runs to even see a good monster.

I'm enjoying the game so far, and I think that examine thing is dumb on the JP player's part... kinda like they're overreacting.

I like being a monk... top priority is damage, and it's easy to remember.

Legionarre's Knuckles are damn good when you get to level 10, also make sure that you equip +DEX rings when you get to level 14--you want to be as accurate as possible.

                          2 DEX = 1 Accuracy
                          2 AGI = 1 Evade

Keep that in mind when calculating how much Dexterity you'll need.

I hope you like FFXI, as it's a time suck. While there are a lot of things I like about the game, there are just some stupid nerfs that were implemented, that just make the game less fun. I usually play for the PvP now, with some strike time so I can catch up with my friends, and not get beat up too badly in the arena.

(and I can't believe our team lost our first Royale match because everyone went after buffed chars! My team sucks)

I think my proudest moment of FFXI was when some Rank 1 BLM was in Yhoator with me and was still wearing his starting gear. -_-

The dude overcast, got all the hate, and died about 4 times before I told the entire party (none of them over rank 2, but I) they all sucked. And rightly so, the next IT monster that came around, he did the same thing again--so I dropped to POL to avoid getting slaughtered.

Some people just don't understand the concept of "Hate." It can be quite funny, or it can cost you hours worth of playing.
