View Full Version : RPG Maker 3 Contest #1

"Complete Garbage"
Information
Contest Start Date: October 17th 2005
Contest End Date: January 12th 2006
Required Software: RPG Maker 3 (PS2)
Prize: Trash Can Trophy Emblem
The goal of this contest is just to have fun. It's nothing big, and there's no real prize. Keeping that in mind, your mission is to create the absolute worst game you can imagine. Look at "classics" like Legend, Edward's Quest, and Smitpok for inspiration, these are the types of awful games I want to see from this contest.
Rules
Games must be playable. The reviewer must be able to complete the game.
Games must include a walk-through text file in case the reviewer runs into problems
Suggestions
Don't know how to make a horrible game? Try making a sequel to another game. Try re-making another game. base your game on a TV show that doesnt lend itself to the medium, like the Montel Williams show. Include as many "bugs" as you feel like. Use the town layout editor while spinning around in your living roon. have a 7 year old write the dialogue. put strange sound effects everywhere. Use text from a Kmart receipt for all your dialogue. basically, just go absolutely insane.

I don't think 3 days is enough time for me to tap into the deepest regions of my crap game capacity... >_>

Darn it, if only Andrew was still interested in making Star Wars VIII.:(
However, I can definately tell I'm gonna have fun with this. I think my game will be about some random object in my room.
*looks around*
Clothes hamper, it is!!

I now embark on a quest to make the absolute worst game ever!
Maybe I'll just remake Romancing SaGa, that was pretty bad.

I'm going to remake Dragon Quest.
I win.

Are we talking about the Enix game or the whatever-it-was that made Enix rename the series over here in the States?

I thought it was always called Dragon Quest and Dragon Warrior was just the name of the compilation of 1 and 2. Either way, I hate the entire Dragon Quest/Warrior series with a passion (but Japanese people gobble this mess up like pizza). The games are soooooooooooo generic but everyone seems to drool over Akira Toriyama's pointy art and buys it anyways.
But yea, a remake of Dragon Quest 1 from the NES complete with great spells like HURT and HURTMORE will guarantee me a win.

I liked Dragon Warrior I...
So Valk, are you going to create that Smitpok sequel that you once planned to do? (And I use the term "planned" loosely.)
Valkysas
10-18-2005, 09:07 PM
I can't compete in a contest that I'm holding.
That being said, Smitpok 2 hasw been done for years. its just the pig in a graveyard titlescreen. apparently I wasnt inspired as much as I was the first time.
All I need to do now is buy rpg maker 3 and whatever that things called that you use to transfer it online.

Oh, I figured you'd have multiple judges on this.Games must be playable. The reviewer must be able to complete the game. So, what if I had a final boss (or a first boss) that had 99999HP, and could only be beaten (barely) by power-leveling to level 99?
Valkysas
10-18-2005, 10:46 PM
if the reviewer cannot complete the game in a timely manner (a few days), the game will lose points as a result.
Draygone
10-18-2005, 10:51 PM
Right. Final boss with 1 HP.

hell with that just make it were the hero keep coming back to life after battle and say that playing this game is worse then death the goal would be just to kill off your own guy

Final Fantasy XIII coming up!
(Seriously, this should be fun, but I bet I'll get bored real quick, is there a certain length the game should be? Is only an hour or so of gameplay too short?)

I've got a few "fun" ideas for this. Not guarenteed to make me win, but at least it's something.

Would it effect the chances of winning in any way if the entry was submitted very early, like this weekend? And would it be publicly released for play as normal or held off until the contest ended? Oh and are contest entries allowed to be rife with foul language and offensive racial stereotypes?
Valkysas

we have no content rules for games at the pavilion.
you can submit it whenever you like, just use the submission forum. PM me with the game's name so I can enter it in the contest.

Hey, kinda off topic, but kinda on topic...
Anyone remember that accessory that is supposed to allow you to transfer files between your PSP and PS2. Itwas posted a while back, but i cant find the topic it was in. And i need to get one, cause i cant find a max drive(and this item sounds less likely to erase my saves).
I'm gonna definitely make a game for this contest...but i think i'm going to murder Chrono Cross in the process. bwahahahahaha!

I think it's called the Max Media USB connector or something. It's the PSP USB cable made by the same guys that made the max drive. It should come with a pair of GC-size disks, one for PC, which you really don't need unless if you want to DL cheats for PSP, the other is the PS2 software that allows you to send files to and from your memory cards.
A couple questions:
1) If you had to choose between a bad game that made you laugh, and a game that was just plain pointless and had no redeeming qualities whatever (Not even a shred of entertainment value or humor), which would more likely win?
2) If we put in a secret (Like you can probably only find it with the strategy guide) place where you can level up really fast and easy (Like a place where you gain levels just by talking to a character), would it affect the score much?

Let me get this straight...
for this game you want us to make the worst game possible that's completeable within a few days?
How bad are we talking here?
Like I just wasted 6 hours of my life bad
or
My level of intelligence actually degraded bad?

Does anybody know what month it is?
I might do this if it were november or something. Just to see how much time i got left.

contest has already started, and ends in december (check the fist post to see the exact date)
as for how bad the game should be, thats up to you. I want to see horrible things.

I just started an entry for the contest. I think I might actually have it ready in a few more days. It's surprising sometimes how much you have to put in even for something really bad.
All I have to do now I think is create the storytellers and ending event.
It's called "What The Hell?"

Let your self make 3-5 bad games first before you start owning the game, in terms of ownage...
You'l like it.

One neat thing in the game I'm building is that the town and the field cycle through 5 different kinds of weather and bgms. When you enter the town, the field's weather changes, and vice-versa. I'll definitely keep a note of this script for future games.
Valkysas
11-05-2005, 11:56 PM
does the weather also change when you come out of buildings?
Dark Sentry
11-06-2005, 08:09 PM
No, it stays the same... but that is certainly doable, without interfering with the other two scripts.

Hey, could you possible scale back the final day to December 25th? Just in case I or someone else get a Max Drive for Christmas.
I'd really like to enter the "Saga of the N00bs: Chronicles of OMG I have ADD a cat" (working title).

maybe. it really had not occured to me.

I have submitted an entry!
It is really awful. Mostly a joke, but I spent minutes making it! It's a minimalist puzzle game the likes of which should appeal to Phillip Glass fans (except it is not as repetitious).
Has anyone else entered?

Aw crap, I just noticed that admissions have to include a walkthrough. Mine didn't include one...
Crimson Knight
03-24-2006, 05:32 AM
Mind didn't either. But I had a way to finish the game through a back door. :p
Dark Sentry
03-26-2006, 12:17 AM
Mine didn't even need a walkthrough... but, nevertheless I put one in anyway!
tjoris9
03-27-2006, 01:25 PM
I think the main reason for the walkthrough was to avoid running aimlessly for hours looking for a way to complete the game because the creator either "forgot" to hint at how to move on, or because there's an incredibly complex and tedious series of nonsensical tasks to perform to complete the game. Of course, it's up to Valk to decide whether or not to exclude your game because of that rule.
Valkysas
03-27-2006, 01:36 PM
the walkthrough was backup in case the game was so set up in such a way that it would be impossible for me to get through on my own, like if the game fequired me to talk to people in a certain order without ever saying so.
