    Video game story

I have to write a article about video game designers. If you could just answer one or all of these questions, I would be happy. I won't use your real names; just your screen name. Thanks!
    1. Have you ever finished a game? If so, how long did it take?
    2. What sofware do you prefer?
    3. What is your favorite "homebrew" game? (RPGM, C++, etc.)
    4. What is your current project?
    5. Advice to would-be programmers?
    6. Proudest moment while making your game?

I'll post a copy of the story when I'm done.

      Re: Video game story

Are we talking real designers, or are RPG Maker-ers included as well?

Congratulations, you've earned a rep point for getting a topic bumped to two different places!

            Anyway, here goes.

            1) Yes. It took about two months to create.
            2) RPGM1 and RMXP. I'm still undecided on how much I like RPGM3.
            3) So far (and I haven't played very many), Spiteful Dead on RPGM1.
            4) I'll tell 'ya when I've worked on it long enough to call it "current".
            5) Brainstorms can be as dangerous as tornadoes if you're already in the middle of a project.
            6) The dog-sled obstacle course.

              1. Have you ever finished a game? If so, how long did it take?
I made a car racer on RPG Maker 2. Took a week.
              2. What sofware do you prefer?
RPG Maker 2, nothing like it.
              3. What is your favorite "homebrew" game? (RPGM, C++, etc.)
              Tetris for RPG Maker 2.
              4. What is your current project?
Plasma Dreams, an epic RPG for RPG Maker 2.
              5. Advice to would-be programmers?
If you're in a hurry, study what you want to learn. If you're not, take baby steps. The tools to create something are as hard to use as you make them out to be.
              6. Proudest moment while making your game?
When I made a better Zelda clone mechanics-wise than neonash did when he released his Zelda game, hehe.
Quote of the moment - "When you cut down a tree, don't stand near it."

                Re: Video game story

                1. I created my Waitressing Mini-game in about a week using RPG Maker 2.

                2. I really like the power of RPG maker 2. I haven't played around with RPG Maker XP enough to know, but I think it could become my new favorite.

                3. The Faith of One is the best full-length RPG made with RPG Maker 2 so far.

                4. My main project is Crown of Order on RPG Maker 2. I'm also planing a game for RPG Maker XP but I haven't had much time to work on it.

                5. Creating a game is hard work but also very rewarding. Try to work on it everyday and keep changing your main focus so you don't get bored of working on the same thing for a long time. Remember to have fun with it.

                6. Changing the default battle system in RPG Maker 2 so that it allowed you to see the party in battle was very rewarding (and a lot of hard work).

The Crown of Order demo is here.

                  1. Yes. I've completed two full games. One about four years ago using RPG Maker for PS1. It took around five months of work. Second game I made was using MUGEN (a fighting game engine). That took around two years of work.

                  2. Right now, i'm completely in love with RPG Maker XP. I also still use mugen also.

                  3. I can't remember the name... It was a really original game made using MUGEN.

                  4. Current project is, "The Twilight of Idols." A tribute to the work of Friedrich Nietzsche. (RPG Maker XP)

                  5. Never forget to give your characters purpose and reason.

                  6. When I finally managed to rig-up a tag team system for one of my mugen characters. ^_^

                    1. Have you ever finished a game? If so, how long did it take?

                    Not exactly, getting there though.

                    2. What sofware do you prefer?

My favorite is RPG Maker 2.

                    3. What is your favorite "homebrew" game? (RPGM, C++, etc.)

I also thought that the Faith of One was the best completed game.

                    4. What is your current project?

'The Farm Life' is what I'm near completed with, and Zelda: Sword of Magic was something I started almost a year ago.

                    5. Advice to would-be programmers?

Hmm.... Think before you act. And I mean that like the 'try it out before you go off asking ever single question possible'. Asking questions to get answers is reasonable, but if you haven't got a clue what anything is yet, try it out.

                    6. Proudest moment while making your game?

Oy, when I finished making my Menu system for 'The Farm Life'; 41 Items, 6 slots for the items. I had to make so many things check based off of whats in your hand and what not.

Don't be pressured into having exactly what you want. All game designers always feel there is something missing, and its never up to expectations, but when you get around it,your unexpected game may turn out better than your expected game.
                      6. Proudest moment while making your game?
Finally playing the finished product. Its the moment of facing your creativity up close and personal.

The worse case video game scenario: stuck at a tough boss, with little health and no items. After being predictably beaten, its enough to throw your controller at the TV How much would you like making the boss weaker, or get rid of it entirely?
Video game designers have that power. And they’re not just people in big corporations. Nowadays, your average Joe may also be a veteran video game designer.
To find out more about designing games, simply turn to the RPG Maker Pavilion at www.pavilionboards.com. There you’ll find hundreds of designers whose screen names will be used to keep their identities confidential.
“I made a car racing game on RPG Maker 2. It took about a week”, says Crimson Knight. The site is mainly devoted to the RPG Maker series, of which there are currently 3 installments for the Playstation 2 console, as well as one for computer called RPG Maker XP.
“Right now, I’m completely in love with RPG Maker XP”, says Haitoku No Honoo. RPG Maker XP and RPG Maker 3 are both less then a month old and have inducted a swarm of new members to RPG Maker Pavilion.
There is plenty of software out there to help you make a game. If you want to, though, you have to be totally committed. “I made a game with RPG Maker 1,” said The Legacy. “It took a year and a half.”
If you are serious about making a game, the Pavilion is a great place to get help. Everyone has a piece of wisdom for budding designers. “Brainstorms can be as dangerous as tornado’s in the middle of a project,” warns Draygone. And Dungeon Warden advises “Creating a game is hard work but also very rewarding. Try to work on it everyday and keep changing your main focus so you don't get bored of working on the same thing for a long time. Remember to have fun with it.”
When it seems that your RPG is going nowhere, remember that all your hard work will pay off. According to The Legacy “(The best part is) finally playing your finished product. It’s the moment of facing your creativity up close and personal.”
So the next time you are frustrated by a too-tough boss, go pick up a copy of any RPG Maker game and do something about it!
