    Multiple File Trick

ShadowX at the Mag figured out how to continue a game over multple files while being able to keep levels and stuff.

    *click*

And for those who can't stand the Mag's look...
Frustrated with the limitations of RM3, I tried several different ways to make my RPG longer. Limitations such as the 100 characters and even Memory can sneak up on you quickly if you want to make a large RPG. Because you can fit up to "3 different RPGs" on one memory card (File A, B, and C), you could make your game continue into the next File. However, there is a problem with that. You can't continue your game where you left off with all of your experience, items, money, etc. Why? The In-Game Save Files from one RPG File won't match another RPG File. This is because they need to have the exact same data as the other. If there is ANY DIFFERENCE between them, In-Game Save Files will only work for the RPG File they were played on. But because of this, there is a little trick.

For the sake of this explanation, say your Memory Card for RM3 looks like this:

    FILE A - My RPG Part 1
    FILE B - My RPG Part 2
    FILE C - EMPTY

-In the Editor, load FILE B.
-Save FILE B to FILE A (BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE "FILE A" BACKED UP OR YOU WILL HAVE JUST SAVED OVER IT AND LOST THAT RPG FOREVER!!!!!!)
-"My RPG Part 2" is in FILE A.
    -Load FILE A.
-Select Play from the main menu.
    -Select Continue.

So what did this just do? All the In-Game Save Files from "FILE A - My RPG Part 1" are now associated with “FILE A – My RPG Part 2.” The RPG will continue from your last save point from "My RPG Part 1."

Now you can continue your RPG with the same data (experience, items, money, etc) from your first game. Just be careful that you did not remove anything you still need from “My RPG Part 1.” You will need to keep the last Map you saved on, the Heros in your current party, and Items. These need to be intact and unchanged in order for the In-Game Save File on File A to function properly. That data has to match up or this won’t work or will really mess things up. But don’t worry, just plan out what you need and won’t need to split your RPG up into two parts.

I hope this made sense. I have fully tested this and it works. This is the only method I was able to find to get around the limitation of RM3 in order to make a large RPG.

This is why I love the RPGM community. There's ALWAYS a way to get past certain barriers that seem so high in the beginning.

I've been limiting the towns and dungeons in my game for fear of running out of characters... maybe I'll make each "world" in a different save... then again, it's a lot of effort of the part of the user, I probably won't.

Not too much of an effort, actually. It's a bit more of a hassle using the trick in RPGM1. The player has to turn off their game and switch out memory cards. I don't think anybody's used it with RPGM1, since the memory limit isn't as big a deal (the memory limit in question is with maps and stuff). I can see myself using this trick with RPGM3, though.

This doesn't really work. If you want the player to be able to go back to a place anytime (like in most RPG's) It won't work.

Which is why in Series 1, which is open-ended to an extent, I could not use the multiple file trick, and instead used 99.9% of the available memory.

Yeah, it's only recommended if you already plan it so that the player can't go back to earlier places for any reason.

Golden Sun anyone? a lot of work was put into coming up with this trick, you shouldn't shoot it down when it can be easily used for many games, yes the game can't be as sandbox... but its either that or make the game smaller than you want

Howdy Zuken, welcome to the Pavilion.

It's only natural for newer people to peruse the older threads on the site, but be aware that bumping threads years after they've run their course is generally frowned upon. It's a bit more lax in the RPG maker sections of the board, but even there it's usually better to just start a new thread on the subject you'd like to resume discussion on.

...But as long as it's bumped...

I found out something about this thing, that is, Lausen did when he was Making Holy Chaos: Prophecies Unleashed. You HAVE to keep your database 100% intact. That is, you can't delete ANYTHING from it. Yup, you can still save a lot of room for new things, but you have to keep all of your old items, towns, characters, maps, events...everything. If I'm not mistaken it archives them in the order that you make them, and if you delete the healing item you made which took up slot 12, everything after slot 12 will be skewed by 1. This applies to everything in your database. Do it wrong, and characters will start to appear in the resumed data suddenly wearing 'MAP 03' as an accessory.

You just have to make sure that you EDIT your items, characters, and events...don't delete them.
