Sony has announced that a flaw in the PSP's manufacturing process that could lead to stuck square buttons has been resolved. According to PlayStation.jp's support section, the molding of the casing was the problem. Units manufactured in the new year no longer suffer from the problem, thanks to new procedures; older units that did were under warranty and have been repaired or replaced by Sony.

Sony has previously claimed that only 0.6% of the units shipped last year were repaired for square button problems. Anecdotal evidence suggests the problem is more widespread. Either way, it's now resolved, which means that statistics are largely moot.
Fabulous day!

now if they fix the dead pixel problems, they MIGHT get my business.

probably the reason that only .6% were repaired is because 99.4% were smashed on camera.

S'about time.

I love it when companies which don't bother dealing with flaws of select products/don't admit to them succumb to extreme "peer pressure" and fix the damned things, so to speak.

yeah, so much for the "most beautiful thing on earth" and "it was intentional due to the design, and won't be changed."

I actually got to hold one on Sunday. They're incredible. The screen is huge (and gets a $6 tax in California since it's over 4 inches). I really want one, especially one of the first million, 'cause you get a free UMD copy of Spiderman 2 the movie.

They're also selling them in these bundle packs (exclusively) that comes with a case, screen cleaners, headphones, and a few other things. Most of it is crap, but the headphones are sexy.

....and they'll be crap since included headphones always are.
:\

How'd you get to hold one on Sunday? They're in store displays already?

Welp, I still hope it doesn't suck. Because I'm a fan of games, not the system or company behind it. I want what is best for the gaming community, and two great competiting handhelds will ensure the customer gets the best deal. (possibly maybe but probably not but the screen is oh so pretty)

Also, Sony is the best gaming company in the universe, folks. In fact, they are the best COMPANY in the universe. There is nothing bad about Sony whatsoever. To say so is blasphmeous and will be punished by public flogging.

Hail Sony.

Sony Sony Sony.

Actually, the headphones I was given to play around with were pretty good quality. Not iPod buds, but they worked. And there was a little remote thingy that hangs at about the chest for easy adjustments.

NOT iPod buds? Oh. Cuz those're the crappy ones I speak of. :|

So where'd you play it?

Sony brought us a demo (I work at Best Buy) so we could sell it better.

And what do you mean about the iPod buds? I know they feel like there's an elephant's testicle in your ear, but the sound quality is great (for ear buds that is). The Sony ones feel pretty good, and the sound isn't bad either. No they're not top of the line, but I doubt I would invest in replacements.

I know they feel like there's an elephant's testicle in your ear,
I think that's probably maybe kind of sorta the problem. The earbud-type of headphones - the ones you JAM in your inner ear - are poop to me.

I know they feel like there's an elephant's testicle in your ear,

I'm just wondering how you got your basis for comparison.

Isn't the implied imagery enough?

Aw darn, I was two hours off from mentioning this first...

Well, I've become slightly more interested in owning a PSP. I just need to hear about the pixel problems and flying discs being fixed as well.

The sad thing is that top of the line headphones are $150 plus anywhere you go. I've listened to the $150 pair at Best Buy, and God, those things are great. I'd never buy them because I go through headphones in like... 3 months, but they were a treat to listen to.

So... was that the elephant's idea or yours?

This is amazing news. I'm getting a PSP regardless because I want a handheld for various trips and vacations coming up in my life, and I prefer this over a DS. This was the only thing I was really worried about (I can deal with dead pixels... my LCD monitor has a few and I don't notice, and I hold game controllers really lightly, I doubt the disks'll shoot out for me).

And for 25 bucks I got completely top of the line headphones. They're the over-the-ear kind, cos I hate shoving those cheap plastic earbuds up my brain. But my dad is a producer and got a good deal on them.

Dead pixels are pretty freaking annoying yo...If Sony doesn't replace your PSP when it has dead pixels, they're offering craptastic customer service.

SirTMagus

...Just like normal.

Valkysas

they'll replace it, but it has to have like, seven all within a 1 cm area.

I'd never buy them because I go through headphones in like... 3 months, but they were a treat to listen to. Same here. Over the past year, I'd say I've gone through 3 or 4 headphones.

And yes, earbuds do suck.

Darn, I'm started to get excited over the PSP. I might have to start looking at games that'll come out for it. But first, I need to find some way to afford a new $300 system.

Damn, I guess I can't talk about this here, but apparently, the PSP can do something that breaks rule number 4.

4. Pirating software, ROMs, Emulation
The open discussion of media file exchanges is permissable as well as some cases of emulation discussion; namely those programs that require the game CD to operate. But all other talk of illegally obtained, pirated software is not tolerated anywhere at the Pavilion. If you ignore this rule, a warning will be issued, or possibly an immediate ban if deemed worthy.

I really want one. A lot.

yeah, sony's assuredly kicking themselves in the face over the decision to go with the UMD format for games. they could have at least changed the shape of the casing or something to make it a bit harder to pirate, but no, they opened the floodgates.

pretty much like if the PS1 shipped with a modchip built in.

The DS had a dead pixel problem. Out of the 50 or so we've sold, one returned with one, and Nintendo replaced it for free. And it was one dead pixel in an are not usually used while playing. , but then again, Nintendo likes their customers.

I think the dead pixel thing is a universal thing with LCDs..... it happens. I've got a dead pixel on my DS...

As for the PSP, i've been excited for a while... I'm still worried about the battery life myself. Buuut. I'll have on. And as far as shooting the UMDs out... Well I think that's if you twist the PSP... I doubt I'll be twisting the PSP. And at least you can put it back in.. And I thought UMD was a propriotry format..... I didn't even know the game makers had access to those....

Smurf Taco
02-25-2005, 12:48 AM
It is propriotry... They're basically smaller MD discs, and "officially" there is no plan to make any writers available for them. So for now, we're stuck with Memory Sticks -_-.

Redneck 2000

NO UMD WRITERS!? NOW WE CANT PIRATE GAMES OMG

Smurf Taco
02-25-2005, 08:29 PM
You'll be able to, you'll just have to either delete them after playing, or invest a lot of money in Memory Sticks (for the time being).
