ASPEN, Colo. Feb 20, 2005 — Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of journalism in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.

The game of life is hard to play

      I'm gonna lose it anyway

The losing card I'll someday lay

so this is all I have to say.

The only way to win is cheat

And lay it down before I'm beat

and to another give my seat

for that's the only painless feat.

              DUH.

I thought that sounded familiar. I can play that on piano.

I'm really sad that he chose to do this. I enjoyed his letters, articles and books. Reading "fear and loathing" for the first time was an amazing experience.

What's the link between drugs and suicide?!

But Ralph Steadman is still alive, to the best of my knowledge. Gonzo Art is rad.

I read this book last fall.

Ralph Steadman is awesome. I was initially interested in his illustrations in FAL, then read Thompson's "The Scum Also Rises" articles in RS, which showcased his incredible Nixon caricatures.

I've been completely bummed all day because of this. I was sure Thompson would go out in some insane, drug-fueled blaze of glory... alas...

                      I guess it makes sense.

Yeah, this hardly seems like the proper way for Hunter S Thompson to go... He must have had his reasons...

Terrible and drug-inflamed as they may have been.

Drugs and/or depression plus the realization that your country is turning into a police state make people do thnigs like this.

I will miss Hunter. I always liked his work.
