Maybe they're stupid because you didn't set their intelligence high enough!?!?!?!

Intelligence determines how effective the AI is and the little AI tab also helps. If you have monsters that rely heavily on skills, set them to skill mostly or skill only. Keep in mind that monsters aren't stupid; they won't use their skills or magic if their overall mp or hp is too low. You have to make sure that a monster's choices are effecient for them.

I don't know the official name so I just call it the AI tab. It's the little box with things like balanced and physical first. It determines how a monster spends their time fighting.

Yeah, I was having issues with that as well. First I had all the enemies INTs at around 60, but at that point they would ALWAYS attack my party member with the lowest health, which while it does make logical sense, doesn't exactly make for as fun gameplay.

Then I had some monsters absolutely NEVER use their skills (they would always defend instead of using the skills, even when I had set the AI type to Skill Only or Magic Only).

My solution for both of those was to keep the INTs at around 20-40 and most of my monsters use the Random AI type (as opposed to the default of Balanced). It's worked out fairly well for me.

I do think that defending is way too high a priority for them though (no matter what AI type they're set to). Having a boss fight where the boss defends 6 times in a row isn't exactly thrilling.

          dim.

Ha! When creating monsters, they can only be as smart as the creator himself!

The "AI" tab, lol, is pretty neat, but hard to use sometimes.
It's pretty weird when you give you monsters alot of Int
how they are smart, since generally monsters aren't supposed to be smart-
              just hard!!!

Re: why are Monsters so dumb with there skills and magic?

I found it best to create all the attacks I wanted a monster to do as magic or skils (even just the regular attack) and set a basic move to require zero HP/MP. The I just set them to magic/skill only and let em rip. This made for a much more enjoyable battle because the monter would still act stratigicallly with about 30-40 INT and not be stingy with using its special attacks.
