Re: Hey, I am about to get Rpg Maker 1
Now that I am looking back, the music makes me wanna stab my ears, not exactly as good as the tunes from 2 and 3. But I will always have a special place in my heart for the first RPG Maker. Anyways I say be ready for having fun making custom sprites, monsters, title screens, etc.

Oh trust me, you must play other peoples' games. This is just to get some ideas on how you should make your game. I suggest you should play the more popular games here (yet you should still play Patrick's Journey got darn it!).
If you had played some games and you find a special one you like (and it's not Patrick's Journey). Go ahead, feel free to take it off your favorite RPG Maker game. You're still cool.

There's an Amazon.com Dexdrive. Also, you should try my game, Forever Darkness. It's not very popular, or long, So far i've gotten nothing but good feedback though. Although they may have not wanted me to feel sad..
February 2008, BEST MONTH EVER!! Brawl and RPG Maker VX!!

No variables in RPGM1, aside from money. You can fake variables by making an item and increasing/decreasing how many of those you have, though you can't have the game check how many of an item you have; you either have the item or you don't.
There's no if/then commands. You have a Yes/No option, a custom 2/3-way choice, and can have it randomly choose from 2 or 3 paths, but that's as far as you can go as far as branching off in the middle of an event. Everything else is checked at the start of the event. The things that can be checked are whether a switch is turned on, if you have an item, how full your party is, if you have more than or less than a certain amount of gold, and some other thing regarding your party size, though I can't remember what it is. You can only have six conditions per event, and up to 90 pages.
If you want to have a big crowd moving around as part of an event, forget it. You can't have more than one object or person moving at the same time, unless they were exact duplicates of each other.
Automatic movement of townspeople are side-to-side, chase player, run away from player, random movement, step in place, and appear and disappear repeatedly. In terms of movement, townspeople always move by taking one step, pausing, taking another step and so forth. The only time they don't make pauses while moving is if you tell them to in an event.
The world map is like a tactical RPG, in which you have like a drawn map and you choose a location to go to by using a pointer.
Up to 15 party members, and 15 classes.
You cannot have class-only equipment.
And I'll stop there. Still, despite its limitations, I've always found RPGM1 to be pretty fun to use."What if like...there was an exact copy of you somewhere, except they're the opposite gender, like you guys could literally have a freaky friday moment and nothing would change. Imagine the best friendship that could be found there."
