I realized that nobody would buy RPG Maker 1, 2, and 3 games.
But RPG Maker XP is a PC-formated. I wonder if it is legal to sell games that burn on CDs? Would anybody buy games that made with RPG Maker XP?
Thanks.
P.S. I haven't made any RPG Maker XP games yet... :)

i wouldn't. besides chances are it'd be illegal since everything but the story would belong to them.

I know that Agetec gave free license to players to charge for their games. But no one in their right mind would.

There is a Royaty-Free License in the RPG Maker (1) manual that says you have the right to make, use, sell, distribute and publish yoru games. But you have to mail an acknowledgment to Agetec. I assume this applies to all RPG Makers.

I think if someone really put a lot of work into a RPG Maker XP game adding a lot of new content, changing most of the defaults, and having a story to rival many commercial games, they might be able to sell it for a small price to cover the cost of all the time they put into it. They would have to put up a demo first so people would play it and want pay for the finished game. I know many Shareware games work this way (or have in the past).
I'm pretty sure the official RPG Maker XP site says that you can sell any games made with the program.

back when the pavilion was first starting out, a lot of people would advertise sites they made where you could buy their games (which they would send to you on a memory card that you send them), some costing around 30-60 dollars.
not one ever sold. no one wants to buy games made with any RPG Maker.

I think if I release a hit game for free that sweeps the net and grabs some attention, then some people would buy a future project. It'd be easier to put a team together and increase production value, too. I won't try selling a game until a large amount of people know who I am, and that's not until I already have a very successful RPG.

Yea will good luck. I say this with a scoff because it has yet to happen and I believe that it WON'T happen.
Seriously, your best bet is to just make a good game and maybe open up a donations page. People are more willing to donate to a project than they are outright pay for it. Daniel Barras, creator of the massive hoax Ocarina of Time 2D, made around 2-3,000 dollars this way.

My borther is planning on doing this. I think he's an idiot. But then again, I have PROOF that he is an diot. Spend 2 minutes in a room with him and you'd know..

Maybe you're an idiot, too, for spending time in a room with another idiot. :p

I don't really expect to be terribly successful in my venture, but I hope to. That Ocarina of Time guy was a smart thief, and he capitalized on the stupidity of the gamer population. I'd rather the win the interest of the gamer population, whether or not I win their money.

Why WOULD anybody buy RPGMaker games? You already spent money on the Memory Card and RPGMaker itself, why a game save? Keep the money for commercial games.

my thoughts exactly. save it for the million dollar projects, or at least the awesome unknown games.

Plus wouldn't you have to own RPG maker XP to play this game you bought? People aren't going to pay $60.00 for RPGMXP and then more for your game. Pluse someone could "buy" your game then change the title and a few other minor things and release it on the net for free.

You don't need rpgmxp to play rpgmxp games as long as you include all the necessary resources in your folder.

Here's how you make a little extra cash off of RPGMXP:
1)Make a website dedicated to your projects.
2) Make a couple good free games that attract a following.
3) Make a good demo of a game you'd pay to play. No default graphics, music, or sounds. Exceptionally-done cut scenes. Make a unique combat/play engine.
4) Do a little research. Offer a demo to a select group of people, then ask them what they thought of it, if they'd buy it, and how much they'd be willing to spend. If the answers ammount to a resounding "I think it's not worth buying. I'd maybe download it if the full version was free" then forget about the following step. Post here, to warn future potential entrepreneurs that it's not going to sell, and have fun finishing the game anyway, then submit it to the Pavilion, so we can all enjoy your creation and shower you with accolades for making a game truly worth the download.
5) Finish the game, and good luck.

This is incorrect. Alpha Nuts is selling its game Angel's Smile (http://angelsrest.cool.ne.jp/game_angel.html) for 1000 yen (around $9.50). Of course, it uses entirely original artwork, so they can get away with that.

Now THAT is something you'd have to make in order for people to want to buy it!
However, there's one little problem. How are people going to pay for your game?

I might won't sell my games. It just that I wanted to know if anyone would buy PC-formatted games that made with RPG Maker XP on CD. That's all.
