    tell me...

what's your standard when making a game? the old Playstation game Wild ARMs has long been my idea of what a good RPG Should be like. can't wait for alter code f but RPGM3 demands my money first. anyway that's the best RPG I've ever played in my life, even better than entry 7 of a particular series. whenever i make a game that's the standard i set. "how would this stack up to wild ARMs?".

now from what i'm hearing most just make their game. but i'd like to know what you think about this subject.
the legends have returned...whenever i can finish these, lol.

I would have to say Grandia (the first one) for me.

FFVII is my favorite game, but I only like the gameplay- it is certainly not the best, but close. I just like leveling up Materia, combining them, etc. I like it for the story first and foremost.

The best gameplay, and my standard, has to be Star Ocean. The Private Actions, side quests, and Item Creation systems are what every RPG should have.

interesting. i always try for a story so good that side quests would ruin it unless specifically written in.

I guess that my standard would have to be Final Fantasy VII. It is still my favorite game to date. However, when I make my games, they aren't going to be Final Fantasy rip-offs, spin-offs, etc. In fact, my first game is far from a Final Fantasy game and my second is even further away than my first.

But still, Final Fantasy VII definitely helps me to think about what a great game can be and inspires me to do something new with the gameplay and have a compelling story without being cliche or afraid to be a little cliche when it is needed.

I haven't actually made an RPG Maker game as of yet for reasons beyond my control *cough*Blue Discs*cough* Nevertheless, I have a ton of ideas plotted out and even with the lack of variety in characters, my game should work fine with the traditional kingdom-fantasy setting that RPG Maker 3 has issued out to us. As for my other ideas, I'm a little worried, but I'll have to wait and see how it all works out since they aren't exactly meant to be in the age of knights and dragons.

I can understand that. I try for great stories too, but remember these are games, not movies. Gameplay is the most important aspect, and I feel that sidequests only enhance the experience. Story is great, but even the greatest stories are boring with bad gameplay, whereas good gameplay can make games with bad stories still worth playing.

i just hate side quests. i find them annoying somehow. i try to make a fun game without 'em. good storytelling is an art form and i often try my hand at it.
