    Your dream RPG Maker.

I'm curious to see what people think a good and balanced RPG Maker would be. If you had your way, what would the next upcoming RPG Maker(for example, our 4th installment) be like?

Basically, I'd like to see RPG Maker 2, with a few improvements.

    HELP
-There's always gonna be people who have no clue on doing even the simplest of things, even if they had their hands held. So, I thought about a simple tutorial. Not a full-on help guide, but a simple "point and do" interface, where the player is led through a few steps to create any aspect of the game, and then they're left to their own devices. Or, a help video on a DVD would be sweet. Probably not possible though.

-Another possibility would be a creation wizard. When you start off on beginner, normal etc., you'll be asked questions as to how much preset data you want, what kinds of preset scripts you want etc.

    GRAPHICS
-There should be a certain degree of graphical quality all across the board. All models in the game should be interchangeable for the field and battle. Like for example, a dragon could be used as an enemy or a party member. I don't think an insect in battle should look like nothing or a sparkle on the field, it should look like an insect. This would also put more diversity in the enemies used in a CBS.

-A simple increase in models. 140 would be a good number for models that could be used as characters or enemies. 50 human models, 50 animal models, and 40 misc. models like treants, insects and that sort of thing.

-A character model part editor would be cool. One idea that might not be pushing it, would be to have every entity have 3 parts to manipulate: a head, torso and legs and then you could stretch out those parts. Everyone could have their own unique proportions.

-All the "special" motions in the game should be usable for ANY character. I wanted to make a beat 'em up or a shooter, but few characters can actually shoot, punch or kick.

-The drawing distance in RPG Maker 2's world maps were bad. I don't want to see miles ahead to the other side of the world, but an extra 8-10 tiles of drawn world around would be great.

    SOUNDS
-Having over 200 SFX was pretty good in RPG Maker 2, see no reason to change it, except maybe add a few more instrumental sounds like electric guitars or something.

-A bigger BGM selection, like 75 would be nice. While I do want a bigger selection of music, I'm not a novice as I make my own a lot.

    FUNCTIONALITY
-Bring back creation time logs! It was fun seeing how many hours of our lives we wasted on our creations.

-The game should keep track of what memory card slot the game was saved on, AND what game slot it was saved to. This eliminates mistaken overwrites.

-Action scripts should run REGARDLESS OF WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON. I don't want to see NPCs stopping because I talked to someone. Also, music and VFX scripts would run better. I also hate having candles supposedly die out because I wanted to examine a book. It'd also make homemade game clocks MUCH more accurate.

-The difficulty thing should be abolished, or be made to actually mean something.

-Multiple choice pages with "page scrolling". This would allow us to have more choices in one command, with the scrolling capabilities RPG Maker 2's class info window had. 24 choices(8 per page, up to 3 pages) would be great.

-RPG Maker 2's editor functions worked better using easy mode. For those of you who didn't know, easy mode allowed you to use a menu based system to use functions that required complex control schemes in the harder modes. This would get rid of the difficult control scheme and eliminate most of the help messages. Having a few control based functions would be good, but overall the editors could've done better with menus.

-Quick Menu commands. The DMS is pretty good, but a lot of people want to make their own CMSs. Unfortunately, we have to do without a lot of options, like text display speed. I think that every selection in the DMS should be available using a command. For example, to go the equip menu without using the DMS, you'd just insert a Quick Menu:Equip command in a script. This would make CMSs a lot easier to make and more versatile.

-Inventories. Users should have the choice of using the DW style system, or a bag only system. And about the bag....the freaking option to have it toggleable should be there!

-The option to "clear" any part of a field in the editors. For example, having to delete a whole list of items for a character and then do the whole list again is frustrating. The ability to delete/copy/paste would've made the process a lot easier.

-Images. These things are under-utilized. They need to be re-sizable(to consume less memory) and movable. The game would detect these images from the USB ports in the PS2/3 to be imported, instead of importing from a camera that might not even work.

-Detecting button input. We should be able to detect constant holding of a button, as well as multiple button presses. Pressure detection would be crazy, but awesome.

-Text box options(with the ability to customize each of the 10 or so text boxes, although I'd like an increase):
    • Transparency. That way we could have messages appear wherever, without borders getting in the way.
    • Variables, inputs and item descriptions should be able to be displayed in a text box.
    • The ability to recolor them.

These text box options plus the above ones would allow us to make a true custom menu interface...without having to learn RGSS, or even get our own resources. Cool huh?

I'm very proficient with RPG Maker 2, so I wanted to make sure any suggestion wasn't something that already could be done in the game. No offense to anyone, but I wanted to make this topic because I see a lot of people complaining about the RPG Maker games, and I wanted to see who could put actually their money where their mouth was and make helpful suggestions. And who knows, this topic may go into the suggestions box for RPG Maker 4!

Like I said in the 4th RPGM thread. The option to make character models from scratch (Like in Fighter maker 2) and letting any character model wield any weapon.

Also, in the cut scenes, it should let you do character animations (Like the character walking down the street with his party) along with the Fire Emblem style cutscenes (durring diaolog).

power of 2 and 3, ease of 1(May just be me but once you got into it it had a very easy inteface). i thnk they should keep using a max file size like with two. that's cool and the next scenario option in the first RPG Maker more often than not didn't work in my experiences.

i'd rather see WAY More models than updated graphics since if 3's are on par with an early PS2 game the next step up would be a later PS2 game then the current system. maybe let the graphical capabilities of the hardware get further along before asking for better graphics.

i'd also like it to be able to handle both midieval and modern times equally well, without a wierd and akward hybrid of time periods.

whoo...that's enough for now. but i'm just warming up.
the legends have returned...whenever i can finish these, lol.

Rpg maker XP with 3D support (I still want to make 2D games).

That's it, really. I want the ease of use option of drag and drop if I need it but I want to get down and dirty and rescript the entire engine from scratch if I want. Rpgm2 tried to do this but it missed out on the drag and drop ease of use factor and just threw raw power at you.

As far as aesthetics, the ability to create character models sounds great especially since games like morrowind and the create a wrestler feature in wrestling games allow to shape and mold your character's body. The technology exists to morph and alter skeletal models, why can't it happen in rpg maker? Also, Fighter Maker 2 had a neat animation creator (it's a shame the game stunk) so it would be great if that was included in the next rpg maker as well.

Finally, the ability to import custom textures. Rpgm2 supported picture paradise and people were able to make their own textures, but it took up INCREDIBLE amounts of resources. With the addition of supported harddrives in the next generation of consoles, importing resources like music and graphics is very important.

I saw a post at gameFAQs about this, with a person saying "Kind of weird how a skateboarding game like THUG has deep character customization but the latest RPG Maker doesn't really have any at all."

I was really about to tear this guy into pieces with, "THUG wasn't a RPG Maker, DUMBASS!" It's true. Developers can't just churn one out like a cheeseburger.

Can't say I don't agree with him. If a game's main focus point is to skateboard or wrestle yet they can throw in some half-a** character maker that's basically moving sliders around, why can't it appear in an rpg maker game? I've played around with 3D before and after you make a base skeletal model and texture it, resizing it is as simple as clicking on the skeleton's joints and expanding them.

But one thing I noticed is that Japanese games don't tend to have a lot of character customization. I don't know if this is a Japanese preference or not, but it appears as if they're content with a bunch of base models and the ability to recolor them. I haven't seen a Jap rpg (at least not yet) that allows actual changing of the preset character model other than putting a hat on them or something. I have to look to western rpg's for the ability to actually make my character MY character.

Anyways, I want wizards. WIZARDS. WIZARDS. WIZARDS. To put it simply, the aurora toolset packaged with neverwinter knights is a perfect example of a powerful engine editor without half the hassle of actually reprograming the engine from scratch. The reason is that they include a dozen wizards that allow you to create what you want quickly and then go in and edit it just as quickly.

Imagine it; you want to customize the menu for your game so you open the menu wizard. It asks you questions like "Where do you want the facesets: right side, left side, above, etc." and then it'll ask you to name the stats (strength, hp, etc.), experience, what options go in the menu like save, items, equip, magic, etc. and then it generates a simple menu based on your preferences. From there, you can go inside the actual menu and edit it to your whim but people who aren't good and editing things in depth still have a nice, basic menu because of the wizard.

I can even think of a monster wizard. You choose the monster model, give it abilities, and then there could be a neat option like "balance monster party level" where you enter the approximate party level that you think your characters will be at and then the wizard generates the monster's ai and stats based on the party you selected.

Man, I can think of so many cool things to do with wizards. I wish I was a good programmer with the manpower of an entire team so I can program an rpg maker.

They have a reason for keeping graphic customization limited, and you can experience why in RPGM2. Basically, whenever you resized the proportions of 1 or more character/object models too much the game would lag considerably. Adding fully custom visual effects always added to lag tremendously, and often times even freezing. I think this is why they keep the graphical customization limited - fear of other limitations and problems arising. (Not that I wouldn't like it either though )

Keep in mind rpgm2 was printed on the blue-bottom cd rom (god knows why). DVD's, the standard medium for ps2 games these days, hold multiple times more data than a cd-rom and are capable of streaming and read better. If they printed rpgm2 on a dvd, I'm certain they could have eliminated the acursed blur and half their lag problems.

If those problems could be solved with a simple medium change, we'd see a lot of great looking games with little to no load times right now.

my dream rpg maker game would include a way to easily transition between different battle systems. strategy, real-time action & traditional. kind of like what's possible with rpgm2, but easier to manage.

what i really don't understand is why can't you look how you want and use any weapon you want.that's what i really don't like and why you can only have four people in a party they should let you swich party members in battle who thinks so to?
i know about the character peoblem and how i can change it but the four people in a party i just don't like that.
or at least swich party members after a battle.

                          Re: Your dream RPG Maker.

I only have experience with RPGMaker3 although I did use the Morrowind Toolset.

                          Additions:
                          Cut scenes
Wider range of music(the range in emotional pieces is very limited)
                          200 character limit
20 character limit for open towns
8 different selections for chars. instead of 4 tile sets
                          Using monsters as Npc's
Higher access to sound effects (many in the game aren't useable)\
Ability to equip weapon/armor to more than 5 ppl (at least 10)
                          optional elemental system for characters/monsters
                          More towns people
                          steal/scan spell/command (RPGMaker3)
                          Double attack animations or/and
allow people to make their own attacks...have 4-5 moves a character can make while attacking and let people choose which ones they want to string...

Like 1 could be your regular attack...2 could be your stronger attack 4 2 could be your two hit combo... ect...

and a way to save your game and load it to a part two...so the information for the chars/items they have...are transfered over to the next game...obviously the other game file would need open char/item slots but it would be alot easier when playing a single game with multiple files do to small file space.

Allow up to three Big enemies 6 medium 9 small
and give the option of up to five characters in a party.

I don't know if I should be sad people never got a chance to see what an RPGM can really do, or if I should be glad they weren't spoiled by the many more options of said RPGMs.
what i really don't like and why you can only have four people in a party
Be glad you get that amount. Most commercial RPGs have the party size restricted to 3. Personally I think that having 5 or more in a party would begin to bog the gameplay down some. Though it seemed to work well enough with FF4.

I think RPGM2 is perfect as is. Simplistic graphics makes it easier to make games alot different from others. I mean odds are that many games in RPGM3 will have the same exact character model and color.
