I wouldn't bother. Idraw doesn't support anything above 256 resolution but check out this website:

Seriously, I just recommend paint. It's what I use.
Even still, I use gimp for more detailed work that paint can't do like the magic wand and lasso tool. If you want to do basic spriting, you really don't need to know anything about gimp other than the fill bucket, pencil, and zoom tool.Comment

I use Paint Shop Pro 7. It works well.

I'm doing chipsets now but Gimp's not letting me increase the canvas size properly. I'm not sure how to explain it.
