    Varmilia 1000: Raven Lords

After Mencara Revelle is finished, I plan on continuing my first and longest project. It has been revamped so many times, its not funny.

    Story

    VERMONE'S TAKEOVER

In the year of the lord, 21663 (Varmilian years), the world known as Varmilia was seized and ruled by Vermone, a beast of unknown demonic origin. During the time of the attack, the major cities of Montane was mourning the death of the renowned general Rhen, who had gained a hefty reputation for his role in warfare. It was during this time that Vermone had seized a takeover of Varmilia. The Humans and Elves who lived in the major cities fought back against the tyrant, only to be wiped out and destroyed by Vermone's power in a short period of time.

The power of Vermone was so great, more than half of the world's population was decimated in 3 days. Establishing himself as the supreme ruler of Varmilia, Vermone's reign had begun. Although he was a tyrant, he allowed the main cities to survive in Varmilia. Many tried to overthrow Vermone, whether for their own ambitions or tried to be heroic, yet all failed.

    THE UPRISING

As was expected, organizations against Vermone had sprung up, but all were in secrecy. Although many factions were formed by individual idealists, all agreed to form into one bond: the Uprising. Knowing that unity does not mean victory (after all... half of the world's population was decimated last time they unified), they decided to grow in manpower and weaponry before making their presence known to Vermone. The Uprising gained the support of all the warriors and military leaders that have not sided with Vermone.

An attack was led against Vermone by Zaline Richardson, one of the heads of the Uprising. Zaline's most questionable course of action was also his last... he planned to face Vermone himself, with two children by his side. Stunned that Zaline thought he could defeat Vermone himself with only two children as aid, the Uprising would not back up Zaline's course of action. The two children he took was a boy named Gaion Spyre, and a young girl named Omelia.

Awaiting the news of the result of Zaline's foolish plan, the remaining soldiers of the Uprising eventually gained word that Vermone had vanished. No traces of him were found... just as quickly as he had came and taken over, the presence of Vermone vanished from Varmilia. Thinking Zaline was victorious, the leaders of the Uprising planned a celebration in his honor. Yet, Zaline and the two children never returned. It was a few months later that Zaline's body was discovered in a river near where Vermone's domain once was. Gaion appeared in a town called Gull near Westar Castle on the continent of Montane, one of the neighboring continents of Plato, where Vermone's domain had been. Omelia has not been found.

    CURRENT SITUATION

Varmilia 1000: Raven Lords takes place several years after these events. You play the role of Gaion Spyre, as he attempts to look for Omelia.

Azhurans -The Azhurans have existed for 3000 years. Known as a female community, they keep their religion going, the religious leader of the community usually kidnaps a male (no proof to support this statement) then mates, and like the black widow spider, kills. Said to resort to cannibalism shortly after. No information provided regarding the consequences if the child born is male. Many supporters of Azhurans claim the whole aspect of cannibalism and kidnap is false, and is made up by the main churches of Varmilia to demonize Azhurans because they believe an all-female community promotes sexism and segregation, a form of Apartheid.

Gragor Mines -Abandoned Ore Mine southwest of Westar, Montane's capitol. The mine was in full operation for about 30 years. Due to its richness in diamond ores, it was excavated constantly for those 3 decades. Near the end of the third decade, rumors of it being haunted had surfaced. Miners claimed that the further they got, the hotter the Mine became. Some workers also claim to hear demonic voices in their heads as they worked deep within. They also claim to have heard screams inside the mine, from behind the mine walls and underground... places not touched by the mine. Many claim they were reaching towards Hell itself. Since its closure, the phenomenon inside the mine has gotten worse, and miners who have reentered claim the layout of the already-excavated parts of the mine have been altered and strange carvings were written on the mine walls.
Also known as the location Jita entered when he was only 12. Due to Jita's exceptional abilities, he survived the Mine and had gained a Spear-like sword that apparently was in the Mine. No other information regarding the Mine is known.

Oceanites -1. (Description) The intelligent creatures of Varmilia's 10 oceans. 2. (Ranking) In Oceanite society, Whales are regarded as the scholars, and is mentioned in Varmilian Human, Elf, and even Oceanite lore.
    -Excerpt from Oceanite Mythology-

In the earliest days of the dwellers of the ocean, the ocean waters were bright blue and filled with prosperity. Sharks and Whales were very much kindred spirits, with the belief of earth and Heaven. Heaven was always seen, yet unaccessible. Many Oceanite prophets claim Heaven begins where the water stops. Many explorers who dared to venture what was known as "Heaven" saw a whole new world. No water to sustain our modern society, but a beautiful world free for exploration. There were mountains, and rocks, and many many more things for which to see, but the explorers, saddened and disappointed, knew they could never visit such a place. During the 13th century of Oceanite history the renowned prophet Yolosi the White Whale recorded a phenomenon that he and an explorer he knew experienced. Yolosi and the explorer went to heaven, and found God, the almighty being who had bestowed the Oceanites their life and society. Many Oceanites thought God as good and loving, yet this "God" seemed tyrannical, and was in no way a sea creature. In fact, he came from what he called The Sky, a place far more inaccessible than Heaven. The God, who called himself Rinhabba, was usually seen in The Sky, when the bright light in The Sky was hidden behind a mysterious shadow. However, Rinhabba was around only after the this shadow cast a gloomy shadow all over Heaven. "Is that shadow Satan?" many Whales asked Rinhabba. "Yes," said Rinhabba. Rinhabba explained Satan was busy in Hell, on a mission to punish evil beings who live in what the Oceanites thought was Heaven. How can evil beings live in Heaven, a lot of early Oceanites pondered. The evil beings were explained as ones who destroy all they owned and also destroyed all that which did not belong to them, so Rinhabba cast Satan to Hell to punish the evil ones.

    -Excerpt 2, The Light-

Rinhabba had predicted the coming of Satan to ward off the evil beings from Heaven. However, many Oceanites questioned this... if the evil beings were in Heaven, why did Rinhabba say Satan was in a mission in Hell? After this incident with Rinhabba, the Whales had no longer had any contact with God. Although many Whales were on religious journeys to Heaven, Rinhabba did not appear. It was then that, when the explorer Whale Harmen went to Heaven, a bright light appeared in The Sky. "Satan has come with the evil ones!" Harmen explained. Not since the days of Yolosi has such a wondrous sight been seen. God was not here, but Satan had brung the evil ones to be punished. Satisfied that evil has been gotten rid of, Harmen traveled back to the Oceanite city of Unabou. During this time, Yolosi appeared in a wondrous light of yellow-gold, to speak with the ruler of Unabou. Yolosi said that the Oceanites must journey and enter Heaven for a battle with the evil one. "Has Satan brought the evil ones to our society?" asked the ruler. Yolosi did not know of such "evil ones", however the Oceanites must take up arms against Satan. Harmen volunteered to lead a 2nd expedition to Heaven. Along with some scholarly companions and holy weapons, Harmen became a renowned prophet and hero, one that would be forever known as the founder of the Whale Elders. These Whale Elders, led by Harmen, traveled to Heaven and did what noone has ever done before... they entered Heaven. Heaven was harsh, and the view to Heaven was blocked off after Harmen entered. As soon as Harmen left the Oceanites dwelling, a shadow was cast over the water. Oceanites could no longer enter or even see Heaven. Harmen never returned, for the overcast lasted for 200 years. When the overcast suddenly lifted, the Whales were the first to witness the aftermath of Satan's War. Yet, there was nothing. Satan was gone... and so was Rinhabba, and the Whales. All gone... but something else was here. The frightened Whales saw beings on Varmilia's Heaven. No God, or Satan... but strange things crawling on Heaven's ground. One of the things came up to the Whale Elder on one of Heaven's shores. The creature, who appeared to be intelligent and spoke a language the Whales did not understand, was apparently admiring the Whales. The creature appeared to have seen a Whale before, yet this was the first time a Whale has seen a creature like this. No Satan, no Rinhabba, but these things now commonly called "Human Beings". The Humans appeared out of The Sky after Satan's War. Oceanite Society deemed them the children of God, for they live in Heaven, and Oceanites do not.

    -Excerpt 3, Relations-

Since the birth of Humans, the Oceanites and Humans did not get along. They did not speak the same language, and the Oceanites resented the Humans' obsession with the Oceanites and the Ocean. "Why do they want to leave Heaven for our society? Do they defy God?" many Oceanite critics publicly announced. The Humans came to be feared, for many Oceanites were captured by Humans. Ghost stories of Humans eating tiny Oceanites plagued the society. Many Oceanite preachers gave sermons on the taking over of Heaven by Satan, for Rinhabba never appeared again. Despite the preachers' warnings, many Whales journeyed to Heaven. However, one fateful event occured during the Whale Krun's expedition. Studying the Humans, Krun and his whale followers were discussing what the Human's actions meant... if the Humans were performing rituals or something of the sort. One Human had seen the Whale's during their conversation, and was apparently frightened. "How come God created beings in Heaven if the Humans did not know of our intelligence?" A War came, and many Oceanites were slaughtered by the Humans ever since that fateful expedition (if Oceanites ever came near Heaven, that is). The War ended after about 500 years, when a Human who had been studying the Whale Language (the Whale explorer Tiu, son of Krun, was captured by a Human) made contact with the then-current Whale Elder. The Human explained they were frightened because they thought they were the only ones who could think and speak. That Human was a scientist, and had convinced his rulers to allow him to study the captured Tiu. The Human showed Tiu compassion, and through his genious learned the fundamentals of the Whale language. The War ended when the Humans and Whales could understand each other. The Whales soon learned the Human language. In an effort to establish peace, and to gain facts, the Whale Elder questioned the Human scientist on the Human's beginnings and the battle between God and Satan. The Humans had never heard of Rinhabba. As one final act of peace, the Whales agreed to let the Human scientist, their friend and the bringer of friendship between Oceanites and Humans, name the world. The Human scientist named the planet after his ancestor that lived 500 years before... the first woman born on the planet, Varmilia.

    Raven Lords -

Rhen -Rhen is a World-renowned War Hero who had lived 2 centuries ago. He is famous throughout the Human/Elf Society, as well as the Oceanite society. Graduated from Montane University (one which is only reserved for Royalty, Nobles, and the Military Personnel). When a War between Anthos and Fort Puhl broke out, Rhen led Anthos to victory. Where Anthos was a rather small nation and Fort Puhl had an army 50,000 strong, Rhen was still able to succeed in victory. His skill in battle, as well as his intelligence in Academics, earned him the title of "Golden Knight". Rumors spread that he cannot be defeated. His skill was only rivaled by that of his long time friend and partner, Jita. Jita was a Half-Elf who wielded a sword he found in the Gragor Mines. The Gragor Mines, a place so treacherous that some say it leads straight to Hell, was conquered by Jita when he was only 12 (where he got his sword). The Sword (which had more of the appearance of a spear) enhanced Jita to the point where he remained undefeated. The teaming up of Jita and Rhen had undoubtedly struck fear into their opponents. They both remained undefeated until their death.

Anthos- Famous nation of Plato. Led by Rhen in a war against Fort Puhl 2 centuries ago, as well as the base of the Uprising. Currently a tourist spot, and is considered a Museum.

Azhurans- A religion of Varmilia. Similar to Amazons, the Azhurans is primarily comprised of females, human or other species. Said to have cannibalistic attributes, it is known one of their practices is cannibalism, and some say when the leader is done with a man (to keep the religion going, so to speak), the cannibalism aspect becomes apparent. What really goes on is a mystery.

Compass Kingdoms- Common name for the four ruling capitals of Montane (Westar), Kushak (Eastar), Hyin (Southstar), and Hiera (Northstar).

Disease of Hatred- A virus that affects the mind of intelligent beings. Known to cause fear and anger in all individuals, to the point of violence and even murder.

Elves- The other intelligent beings that live on land besides humans. Although they are called "Elves", they are much different than described in literature. They are often scornful and hold honor and pride higher than anything else. Unlike humans, there are 4 different genders. Their capital in Varmilia (as a whole) is Femnar, in the continent of Montane. Their leader is Ekmond, friend of the current King of Westar.

Fort Puhl- Dominant Military Nation of the Plato Continent 2 centuries ago, during Rhen's time. Fought a war against Anthos when it was discovered that Fort Puhl's government and Church establishments was full of corruption and conspiracies. Only stands in ruins, for it was destroyed by the Army led by Rhen and Jita.

Frontier of Fire- The most mysterious continent. Called the Frontier of Fire because it is unexplored, and is said that when you look at it from a distance away, it looks like a ball of flame. Strange stories of FoF has surfaced for hundreds of thousands of years, from the rocks there scream and bleed, to the presence ot ghosts, aliens, and other otherworldly beings.

Gragor Mines- Mines located Southwest of Westar. Considered to be Haunted, many explorers who have entered the Gragor Mines claim it leads to Hell. For more information, see Gragor Mines in the Information Encyclopedia.

Gull- Town in Montane, famous for the Gull Tavern. Although small, the town and its attractions (mainly the previously mentioned Tavern) are known all over the world. Considered a Neutral Zone, for although it supports affairs of the Montane Royalty in terms of Citizen Affairs, it does not support any Military actions of Westar.

Harmen- Legendary Whale explorer who witnesses a bright light in the sky, as mentioned in Oceanite mythology. Led the expedition to Heaven to fight the Evil One, according to the orders of Yolosi's spirit. Leader of the Whale Elders.

Hiera- The most despised continent, due to the recent and historical actions of the royal family of the same name. The capital is Northstar. The Hiera's are known as murderers and criminals in the noble regimen only, whereas the citizens are known for producing organizations to provide charity and the like. The royal family also have a trait for keeping to themselves.

Humans- Dominant species of the land. Rivals Oceanites as the dominant species of Varmilia as a whole. The beginning of the Human race on Varmilia is a mystery. Refer to Oceanites in the Information Encyclopedia for more details.

Hyin- An Egyptian-like continent, home of Southstar. The Hyin family are known as great explorers. Being Egyptian-like, it is obvious Hyin is comprised of deserts. The most famous desert, the Cronin Desert, resides there and is known for using magic to create mirages and bring them to life. How the magic started there is yet a mystery.

Iceshard- The northern polar ice cap of Varmilia. With winter mountain peaks, solid ice ground and permafrost, it is known as a mountain climbers paradise. Legend has it that the mountain Kerphual which resides there is so tall, its peak reaches above the clouds. A dangerous place because some say temperatures in some places go as low as -200 degrees.

Jita- Partner of the war hero Rhen. Considered to be highly intelligent, rumors have surfaced that he cursed his sword to where it will come alive when he dies. He has been dead for 200 years, so...?

King L'Vor- The former king of Westar. Widely known for his fight against Vermone, although his army never stood a chance against Vermone. His military actions had cost many innocent people their lives, and is therefore infamous. Currently, an insult in Varmilia is to call someone "King L'Vor".

Krun- Father of Tiu. Known for being one of the Whales caught in the act of displaying intelligence in front a human, ultimately resulting in a 500 year blood feud, ending with Tiu being examined by a human, turning the Whale-Human War into a sort of bonding friendship.

Kushak- The second most well-known continent of Varmilia. Home to the Kushak family (which the continent is named after). The capital is Eastar, brother city to Westar (the Montane capital). Known for being a militaristic state and home to the Knights of the White Blade, an exclusive society for nobles.

Montane- The most prestigious continent, being home to the Montane family, the ruling family of Montane residing in Westar, and Relan. The royal family of Montane has existed for approximately 7,000 years, and has produced thousands of heros and icons, from war heros, to rulers, and even celebrities in theaters. Erika, the heroine, belongs to the Montane family.

Oceanites- Common name for the sea creatures, but not the true names. The land dwelling Humans and Elves (among others) are not the only intelligent beings of Varmilia. The creatures of the sea also have the ability to think and speak. From the criminal Sharks, to the prosperous and regal Whales. Since the water pressure of the water in the ocean is too great for humans to swim to the bottom of the seas and oceans, it is a mystery how their society is like. It is said that since they are just as intelligent, they have built underwater cities and live like the humans do.

Plato- The war torn continent, said to be the most violent. Nearly all the wars of Varmilia have been fought here, making this place almost taboo to live in. Anthos, the town in which Gaion was born, is here. No ruling family.

Rainbow Sea- Sea near Kushak famous for the water being different colors. Since water is clear, it is famous that these waters are colored like a rainbow. In one description by a Varmilian scholar, the water in a glass looks like he had a brightly colored rainbow in the glass. Said to have a funny taste, and may have hallucination-based effects if drank.

Raven Lords- Legendary original rulers of Varmilia. Vermone, the Demon ruler of Varmilia, is said to have been a member of the Raven Lords. Since he disappeared for no apparent reason, one can only speculate what this means, and if it has anything to do with the Raven Lords.

Ravuji- A religion of Varmilia. These self-proclaimed native inhabitants of Varmilia live a life they see as natural. They don't use man-made weapons and tools, or anything else they consider not made by nature. Seen as a strict culture, the mainstream factions and religions of Varmilia look at the Ravuji as a threat, heathens, and infidels. Because of this, they are often put to blame for crimes and the 'demonizing' of Varmilia's youth culture (they are the scapegoat, if you didn't guess).

Relan- The central city for business and entertainment in Varmilia. Funded by the Montane family, all denizens of Varmilia gather for the events and games that Relan is known for the world over. Located in Montane.

Rhen- War leader said to have lived 200 years prior to the present in Varmilia. Shortly after his death, Vermone took over as ruler. The significance of this is later determined. Refer to Rhen in the Information Encyclopedia for more details on the life of Rhen.

Rinhabba- The Almighty, according to Oceanite myth. Was in a war with the Evil One, after the Evil One was supposedly punishing evil beings in "Heaven".

Solar Eclipse- In much of Varmilian literature, a dominant theme is a specific solar eclipse. One famous scholar claims he met the solar eclipse in person. (???)

Tiu- Son of Whale Explorer Krun. According to records found in Oceanite and Human history, Tiu was the Oceanite Whale captured by Humans, and studied by an unknown Human scientist. This Human scientist was renowned for bringing Oceanite and Human societies on more friendly terms, due to his dedication in his research to understand Oceanites.

Unabou- Oceanite capital of Legend. Still stands, but in ruins, for it has been abandoned since the time of the Whale explorer Krun.

Vahriman- Occasionally, unnatural events occur around Varmilia. Vahriman is the word used to describe this phenomenon. Said to be the name of a spirit in the Ravuji religion.

Varmilia- Name of the planet, Varmilia was the name of the first person born in legend. The different religions of Varmilia have different versions of the life of this person. The truth is unknown.

Vermone- Demon who has ruled over Varmilia for 200 years, until 9 years before Varmilia (game) occurs. With an unknown origin, many believe he is a member of the Raven Lords. He took over Varmilia in a seige staged against Emporer Kuri of Hyin. Afterwards, he decimated all the armies of the world and the citizens, killing half of the world's population with his bare hands. After establishing his power, he agreed to let the current other human and elf rulers continue their reign, as long as they remain obedient servants under Vermone, as the supreme leader. He apparently waited until after Rhen was dead to execute his plans of takeover.

Vurgen- ???? Name unknown.... does not compute.... ????

Whales- Royal rulers of Oceanites, Whales live in harmony with the ocean. There are two classes of Whales... the Whale Elders and Whale Explorers. Whale Explorers are the frontiersman of the Ocean, and are often the first ones to visit the Ocean surface, both in legends and at the current time. Whales tend to live for an average of 320 years. For information on the Whale Elders, see Oceanites in the Information Encyclopedia.

Yolosi- Oceanite Whale prophet who made first contact with Rinhabba. Appeared as a spirit to have the Whales take up arms against the impending Evil One.

Thanks. If you noticed without the background, it was sort of cliche, but I think I developed a rather nice story to it.
