    Re: Future careers

I'd like to be a comic artist or a storyboard artist for animated shows. I already work on my own projects all the time, and most everything I know (art wise) I've had to teach myself.

Genetic research into Ag. Biotech, or something similar.

Technically, my career already started when i started working for my professor.

        And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope

Current I work in doing large format digital printing, so I guess you could say that it's my career. Though I would like to do something more creative, involving music or comic art.

I want to be a videogame developer. I want to actually make the story, puzzles, etc. I want to make the game. The only way to get good practice now is if I layout everything and make plans for future. The best way to go through that is by RPG Maker!

Novelist. I've already started some, and my RPGMaker games are also low-brow versions of a few of them. I am currently looking for publishers, but so far the only one I can use is Author House.

                    Re: Future careers

Probably going to start out as a graphics programmer for games, and then work my way into being head designer. My goal would be to either have my own team in a company and be able to come up with my own stories, or to start my own company. But for now I'll just settle with getting in the door.

                      Re: Future careers

I guess I am lucky. I am in my forties and only ever had two full time jobs (after high school).

When I was young I wanted to either be a scientist or work with art.

I got to run my own a Comic Book Store for fifteen years after high school. During that time I got to edit a comic book series too. Then I woke up and went back to school, got a Philosophy Degree, a Chemistry Degree, and a real job.

I am finding that I made more money tutoring Chemistry in college than I am as a Chemist (per hour... but I get lots more hours now...). I've been in charge of a lab for 9 years now and am feeling the "Change yer Damn Career Again!" bug coming on. Who knows what I'll do next? I have some stop motion animation I did years ago on VHS, which I may transfer to mpg files and circulate to see if reactions justify my daring to pursue yet another dream or just stay stuck in a rut for a while.

Good luck to all you young 'uns. Keep to what you like and you will do well.

                      Peace.

                      MOO!

                        Re: Future careers

I have a few career options in my spectrum all of them live of each other in a sense.

1.) Game Design. Sounds cliche, but I am dead serious about this. I've been doing some research on this career and have seen all the pro's and cons of game development. At first I wanted to code, but that requires immense math skills, so I said screw it. I see in a game's completion, it requires 4 fields. Game Design/Art-Music/Programming/Testing. I laugh whenever I see those Westwood College commercials, if you havent seen them I can explain. Two guys beating on the R1/R2 buttons on a PS1 controller with horrible sound effects. So horrible, the sound managers of Atari would laugh. A woman comes in and says, "you done testing these games?" the guys are like, "Yeah! You need to tighten the graphics on level three and blah blah blah." Then he makes a lame comment about how his mom said he'd never get anywhere with these games and he cant believe that he gets paid to play games. Well his momma knows best, game testers only get minimum wage and testing is only a temp job. People looking to get a CAREER in game testing, I wish the best for you. All that is left in the video game creating process is art and game design. The game design career is the most intriguing to me and I know and understand the risks of the career. The only thing I would need is to talk to an actual game designer and ask him. Plus, since I do have some musical talent, I might be able to make some SFX/BG, for a game.

                        2) Not really a career, more like a second, "job". With my band (currently drummerless), we'd play shows at any place we can. Make cd's and throw them out there, get our name out, and if people like us, yay, if they dont, we do covers for shows and get some side money. I'm not depending on this for a career, but a second money source.

                        3) If 1+2 go wrong, I will get a job at Target/Wal-mart whatever. Any place where I could work and think at the same time. Think about nothing better than comedy. I would go to comedy joints and try some acts and see if anyone can even bare me. I think if I went out there I could make some people laugh.

                        4) If my Game Design/Music/Comdey career turns to crap, I may try to write some books. I have a hidden writing talent which could help me. Whenever i'd have free time, i'd try to write something, a novel, whatever. Not very dependable, but something i'd enjoy. My only problem would be that I am good at writing stories for video games, not necessarily novels/books, but i'd get by.

                        5) Get into law school and learn a lot about law and politics. This dream is kind of foggy. I would love to be a politician, but there would be SOO much to sacrifice.

I'm sure you might be laughing right now, but if you knew me in person, it'd might make more sense.

Well for those who want to get into games anything I would recommend looking at these sites as they have a lot of useful info. I have found them useful, and seeing as a couple of people here are interested in these things I figure someone will find them useful, and hasn't heard of them.

www.gamedev.net Info on a wide range of topics related to gaming ranging form beginner to professional topics, and it lists some job openings.
www.gamasutra.com Tons of information on the gaming industry, including the latest news from all over the gaming industry, and they have a lot of interviews with developers, and more advanced info than gamedev usually has. (require free registration to read the interviews and such, but the news doesn't require one.)
www.igda.com The International Game Developers Association. They have chapters all over the US and the world, consider joining one. (I need to start checking out the one near me)
www.sloperama.com/advice.html Tons of tips on how to get in the industry, what game development is like, what not to do, etc from Tom Sloper, a very big Game Designer (don't think he does anymore, did a lot of stuff for older systems, but the info is still very relevant). He's a bit cynical at times, so don't be offended, just realize he is trying to give a real world perspective on these things.

If that doesn't work out I can always go through with mechanical engineering
