Yesterday at my campus, I found work. It pays minimum wage and I can get in 17 hours a week max. I really needed this, bad.
You see, my dad is unable to work. He was a registered nurse, but he has back problems and he is unable to do any lifting with his right hand any longer due to his wrist degrading. It hurts him to even lift his wallet out of his pocket. He hasn't held a job since February. If he ever does work again, it will likely be some minimum wage job where before he was making around $20/hour.
Due to tuition prices at my university going from about $20k when I first enrolled to $28k today, and scholarships not rising to compensate(I used to only need to pay like $3k), I am having trouble being able to afford to stay in college. Since my household made around $80k last year, I didn't qualify for any financial aid other than stafford loans despite the fact that my dad has made virtually nothing this year. My university also limits the total amount of loans I can take out. I applied for other loans, but since I had no credit history, they were rejected.
I was about to be dropped from my classes for not having the minimum payment for my tuition paid. I had until Friday Sept. 2nd to pay it, even though it was due August 13th. But, at the last minute, my grandma charged her credit card for money which I used to pay my tuition. I applied for more loans earlier and they are pending, but once they go through, I will be able to pay her back. I also got her as a cosigner, which should help my chances. Now that I have this job, any interest that is still left on her bill I will be able to help her pay off, and I'll be able to afford books(eventually), of which I have none at the moment.
As for that sports car I want to convert to electric, it will continue to sit for the time being. I tried to sell it for less than I put into it, but I guess I'm fortunate that there were no buyers now that things are temporarily fixed. My step mom is working 60 hours a week to put food on the table, and now that gas prices have risen, she cannot afford to do that. Now that I'm working, at least the internet could be renewed. It would have been cancelled tomorrow had I not finally found a job, which my step mom and I both agreed on. And I only got this job because I told my professors about this situation and why I wasn't able to afford textbooks at the moment. All those application forms I've been filling out since February got me nowhere because there are no jobs here. The job market is only going to get worse as the economy tanks more.
But things are at least looking up somewhat. I'll at least be able to stay in school for another semester, which is good. If I have to drop out next semester, so be it. And eventually, I'll be able to renew my plates and pay property taxes on my car so I can drive legally again, and if not that, I'll at least have money to pay for another cheap bike and take my risks with inconsiderate drivers again.
