Something Awful is somewhere awful - New Orleans stuff

    http://www.somethingawful.com/

The site's down and in its place a pretty scathing commentary...

Makes me wish superheroes were around more often.

It's a shame the hurricane didn't thrash Texas, then Bush wouldv'e had all the troops back from Afghanistan, Iraq, and everywhere else around the globe to help out with the cleanup.

if it hit texas, then we'd have nixon, IRC, and a bunch of other pavilionites possibly DEAD. also, the pavilion's only server (mirror servers have been dead since the attack in august) is located near the gulf coast of texas.

      no thanks.

Huh. I thought you owned the server.

Not that hard to take an old computer, shove Linux on it, and throw out a website. Not sure if that's appropriate, though.

It woulda been cooler if the hurricane hit like, nothing.

The rescue efforts have been pretty crummy thus far, though. Hard to say who is at fault.

I do. but I can't afford to run it out of my house. plus, it's pretty big. I dunno where I'd put it. imagine 6 X boxes stacked ontop of each other. thats about how big it is. it would be a lot smaller if I just bought a new case for it, since it used to be a yahoo chat server. there's a lot of extra room in there for the other server "blocks" that used to be in it. anyways, too much trouble for me, so I just hired a company in texas to take care of it and it now lives inside a server farm.

it has a bunch of stickers from nintendo power all over it.

I'm packing up my gear to go now. I've been called and put on stand-by. But I'm National Guard in Georgia so who knows if I'll go or not. But I really think it's ridiculous I'm not there now.

You take care of yourself, 2X.

Oh my god! You are so beautiful.
I had no idea how beautiful you were.

Stay safe. If you catch any of your fellow gaurdsman committing crimes, looting nonessentials, or harming others, kick the **** out of them.

That place must be hell, and it's a taste of what peak oil could do years away from now on a national scale. I'm just hoping all those people there are taken out to a safe place where they can shower, eat, sleep, and have something to drink. Considering they've been living in sewage for days, they'd literally kill for a shower...

The possible death toll scares the **** out of me. It angers me that our government is so incompetent that it took days to act, as opposed to hours. Bush was playing golf just after the disaster struck and then went to DC, and Condoleeza just saw a Broadway musical on her New York vacation... Shows where their priorities are at. When foreign nations like Canada were appauled at this, and wanted to offer aid with actual manpower, the Homeland Security Department stepped in and said no. No wonder Bush never actually touched down in the city when he finally decided to go there. He wouldn't last five minutes.

Why are the bases not being used to hold people? Quite clearly the Astrodome is full.

Even worse, the government is thinking of rebuilding the city. It's below sea level, and this could just as easily happen all over again. Stupid, stupid people in this world...

My roommate and another friend of ours are in the guard and shipped out at 6am yesterday. If I hear anything from them that I think is Pavilion-worthy, I'll post it. Oh, and I'm in MO, so they have a two day trip before they get there...

The memo that my roommate got on Wed was that he would be gone for 2 to 4 weeks. He said that's unrealistically short (and I agree), and that it'd likely be 2-3 months. The apartment sure is quiet now...

Oh yeah, and they just got back in late April/early May from their other deployments. They both started college, again, and had to drop all of their classes after the third day of the semester. So much for the army paying for college. I told my roommate that if they get deployed again after they get back (whenever that will be...), I will personally rip the throat out of whoever gave the order. They've only been home about 8 months of the last 3.5 years. The only reason I'm not as mad this time is because they're leaving for a good cause.

                              and I'm blue...
