    First Radiata Stories review

    http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3143076

    ...and it isn't for me.
Radiata Stories is a game that coasts on charm and stirs up some clever ideas. Like its hero, however, it's too slow, simple, and obvious to overcome its routine existence. The neat touches, unique worldview, and collectible characters will definitely make many gamers happy to be residents of Radiata. All the same, this adventure is just so slow-paced and slow-witted that it's just not gripping in the way a good fantasy epic should be. You've got to hand it to tri-Ace, however. The company is not afraid to make flawed but fascinating cult RPGs. Viewed from that perspective, Radiata Stories succeeds.
...So why the 7.5 "engaging" score?! That makes no sense. This ****ing sucks. WHEN WILL I PLAY ANOTHER GOOD RPG?

Man you complain a lot. About everything.
Maybe you should actually play it first. Then your complaining will be justified.

    Big complainer.

I'll wait for the IGN review, as long as Jeremy is reviewing it i'll know if it is good or not. He is really good when it comes to reviewing RPG's and i almost always agree with his reviews.

Its sad but i would have to agree with Magus on this one. Suikoden is fun but there isn't much chacter development and you can't even play all 108 people. With 150 playable chacters 90% of them will just be warm bodies. Unless the gameplay is SUPER awsome who would want to lvl 150 people. How can you make 150 unique people. theres going to be lots of people with the same abilitys and someone is going to be better then the rest making many chacters pointless. Also most the out of battle takes place in one city?? and you have to follow people around for long periods of time and watch what they do to recruit them? I don't know......

I will try and keep an open mind though, so if lots of people are raving about it i will pick it up.

The RPG genre is dead to me. Dead.

There are plenty of good RPGs, Magus. You're just a big fussy baby.

                      Re: First Radiata Stories review

RPG fans can be the biggest babies. If a game doesn't pack in innovation then they'll cry about how it's boring and how all the old games were better. If a game packs in innovation then they'll cry about how wonky it is and how all the old games are better. They always complain about how the stories aren't engrossing enough and how they prefer the stories to the older games, yet the older games have much more simplistic and were just as frequently, if not more so, generic or 'cliched' than current generation games are. They always complain about how the characters are bland as well, yet they're favorite heroes and villains embody the same characteristics as the characters they distaste, the only differenciating factor is that they grew to love their favorites back when they were younger and more impressionable. Not that any of these qualities in games really matter in the first place. If the stories and characters were what people were looking for, then they'd find a good book instead. I don't know how any reasonable person could refuse to accept that as far as storytelling in games are concerned, its nowhere near the same level of sophistication as other mediums. I personally, have yet to encounter a storyline from a game that I can appreciate in the same respect as real stories like The Lord of the Rings, or even those from movies that I've seen.

The point is that the so called drought of 'decent' role playing games is less a matter of developers' inabability to recapture what makes an RPG compelling, but definately more of the RPG fans' own diminishing returns. It will always be a factor when you judge new material, but when you aren't concious of it you can be so damn obnoxious.

I think the best you can hope for in a role playing game is a fun battle system, a good setting to emmerse yourself in, and attractive character designs. If you're looking for more than that, then I suggest that you look elsewhere.

Actually I don't care about innovation. As far as I'm concerned every rpg can be exactly like FFIV only with new characters and maybe different graphics. I definatly would like to see a return to 2d graphics.
