    Xenogears (xeno-series...)

I'm re-playing it, and am on The Thames right now. 32 hours and taking my sweet ol' time, making sure I'm not missing a thing. It's amazing how much more I noticed this time around. I like Citan a lot more, and am still blown away by how deep the storyline is.

Never did actually "beat it". I got really close, gave up and sold it. I was at an impossible Gear fight with Ramsus, Miang & some other jerk. Same with Xenosaga. Was at the Song of Naphilim (sp?) and my file got trashed.

    Anyways, dicuss.

Im a huge fan of the xeno series, Ive played, beaten and mastered each one, but xenosaga 2 was a major let down from the previous ones.

It's probably best I stay away from this topic.

Or maybe I could say nice things for a change...

I don't see how you can't think that Xenogears' story is deep, considering how many different aspects there are to it. That doesn't mean it's good, but it does have depth, even if it is long-winded, hard-to-follow, and sometimes downright boring.

Personally, I thought Xenogears had a good story, and for the most part I had fun wading through it, even the second disk, which they just should have printed up in novel form and prompted you to turn to the screen for the battles.

I liked Citan from the very first moment. He's like the bad-assed geek we wish we all were.

Xenogears is one of my favorite games. I liked the battle system(although it seems most didn't), but the random battles were a little too frequent. The dungeons, for the most part, were boring as snot. I liked the sewers and the Tower of Babel, though. Perhaps I liked Xenogears because it was a little bit different than the typical RPG. It was the first time I didn't mind crawling into a mech and bashing things. Also, I just liked the scale of the danged thing. Every actually seemed HUGE. Even the towns weren't just a few small buildings tightly clustered. Most of all, I probably liked the music. For some reason, if a game has good music it can carry me a long way through it. I honestly don't think Star Wars would be as good without good music. I think Xenogears is the same way to me.

Xenogears is just one of those nostalgia games, its one of the great rpgs I used to play as a kid til the wee hours into the night, they dont make rpg's like these anymore. And no, crappy sprite filled ps2 rpg's dont count, and im talking all of them.

bigfoot, hope you arent talking about Nippon Ichi games, cause, while they arent quite the old school goodness that some of us remember, they are the closest thing to it nowadays.

I dont think there are any othe sprite based rpg's out there right now...

Reading the Perfect Works timeline makes me tremble with awe at how much effort was put into the backstory of this game.

                        Re: Xenogears (xeno-series...)

Naming everything with religious names doesn't equal depth. Xenogears took influence from Star Trek, Eva, Star Wars, Soilent Green, and a host of other science fiction and jumbled it all into a big mess. A story doesn't need to be complex to be good, it just needs to be well told. Unfortunately, Xenogears was unnessarily confusing from start to finish. And not because it was this complicated knot of plot but rather it was purposely confusing to give the plot a lot of mystery.

This is different than have a "deep" plot. Depth equates that there is something with real substance beneath the surface story-line. Did Xenogears ever teach me something about politics? Religion? Psychology? Did I ever feel real emotions for the characters or their situations? Not once.

Xenogears plot twisted and turned and loop-de-looped but it was shallow from start to finish. This isn't a bad thing. I'd be hard pressed to think of ANY videogame with depth. Videogames aren't really meant to be deep. Not yet at least.

Maybe it was because I was young when I played it, but Xenogears was my first exposure to quite a few religious/psychological terms contained therein, and I think it has one of, if not the, best romantic stories in a videogame.

                          Xenogears made me cry. Once.

It defintally has the best love story. Lovers who stay together over thousands of generations. Being reborn and rejoining.
