    Character saving trick

So I'm sure all of us have been frustrated by the 100 character limit, so this is a trick I thought of to work around it. I give one of my characters an ability called 'Spy' or 'Eavesdrop'. This ability allows the character to go to certain windows and spy on or talk with people in the building. I just make a touch (or button) event by the outside of the window which can only be triggered after the ability is learned. I can use the 2D character portraits to allows the character to talk with or spy on these people. This can allow you to have almost unlimited "characters" in your game, you just only interact with them through windows. It is only limited by how many events you can use on a map and how much memory they take up.

This can allow way more characters than the game normally allows, and it can be fun because the player has to check around and look for hidden characters/stores/quests in windows. You can even make levels of the ability (i.e. Spy 1, Spy 2) which allow players to go back to previous towns and find new characters.

Anyone else tried something similar? Thoughts?

    That's very true!

As long as you don't use the characters in battle or even use a model at all, you can introduce lots of characters to fill out the game, and make it feel more populated.

    Good call!

It's a cool idea - and I think that a "Spy" type of skill is the best way to utilize this kind of trick, so players don't need to compulsively check every window of every building (not knowing beforehand where the events are) to advance the plot.

Yeah, I plan on making it used more with optional quests than as part of the main storyline. That way players don't have to search all over to advance the plot, but they can explore and find new hidden easter eggs. I will probably make the events touch events so they can check just by walking by.

Cool. Wish I thought of this.

I have been catching up on some of the things I've missed over the last few weeks. I really like this post. Cool idea and very easy to implement.
