    RPGMaker 2 is HARD!!!

I just got RpgMaker 2, and it is a pain to do almost anything. Does anyone have some advice to help me get used to the new way to do everything, because compared to rpgmaker for the playstation this is extreamly convoluded and difficult to do anything from create events to making a town.

    think of everything kind of backwards okay. instead of making a world, then placing the objects, then placing the events, then making the scripts. You know make the script, put it in a event, put that event in a event placement editor. That is an example. Just play around with it for a while, the best tip is that. It took me about a good 3 hours before I got my first script up and running right ^^;

RPG Maker 2 sucks. It's good only if you like Dragon Warrior 7, which in my opinion would of been an awesome adventure game rather than a rpg, because the battle system was a living hell. RPG Maker's 2 battle system is annoying. An even walking around is annoying because everyone is looking left....then right....then left....then right again, MAKE UP YOUR FRICKIN' MIND! I am aware that RPG Maker 2 gives you more options, but overall, the gameplay itself sucks. Yor character doesn't even move his legs either. It's like the Jetsons. I know I sound like i'm *****ing about stupid stuff, but honestly, this game is hell to make, and hell to play. I would just play RPG Maker 1 until 3 comes out. But that's MY opinion, and MY experience with the game.

RPG Maker 2 is very complicated. It has a wealth of customization available though, which makes it a very powerful tool. The best way to learn is to study the sample scripts provided. Don't get over-zealous too quickly. Start out creating simple and small events first. Don't expect to make a Tetris game with RPG Maker 2 like Jugem did as your first project (which is insane considering this is an RPG game creation tool... I can't wait to see how he did it!) It was mentioned "Your character doesn't even move his legs either", this is probably because the character is set to the WAIT action. Mostly all of the characters have walk animations (except for a few that float, hop...ect). The in-game help descriptions are vital, so read all of them. Dungeon Warden and RPG Learner collaboratively created the "RPG Maker 2 Advanced FAQ" which is available here at the Pavilion. It is an AWESOME resource for Noobs and Pros alike. Check it out!

Yes, this games only limitation really is just your own imagination. At first, I just made a standard Med-Evil RPG. Which I stopped at, but you CAN make any setting you want. Like my game Hippy Hunt 2, everyone said that you couldnt have guns in a RPG Maker game since the game doesnt have guns. And my game is full of em And now that I proved myself wrong I am making my dream game

Or like Dragaron said, Jugem has made a Tetris game, "Tetris!" or like Brock Nash, he made a fantastic Zelda game with a Zelda like battle system and great puzzles that would even challenge the creators of the franchise. So hope you figure this game out, if you have any specific questions about RPG Maker 2, feel free to ask ^^.

I am currently making a modern horror game with it, and it is turning out pretty good so far. Especially since I am going with an "alone" theme, and no character models are used.

Our Tips and Tricks thread is full of things both exotic and commonplace that will help you.

I posted a simple tutorial for how to create working doors and chests. I had heard that people have problems learning that aspect of the game. It is here:

              http://www.pavilionboards.com/forum/...2961#post42961

I hope you do not give up on RPGM2 too easily. Yes, it is hard, but if you have ever enjoyed a game of chess against someone really good, then you will know that difficult does not always preclude fun.

I have often questioned (even here on this forum) whether this is a video game or a programming language.

If you have no experience programming computers, this will help you learn.

Anyway, there is one advantage you have over most people who buy this game and get frustrated with it: You found a place full of people who can help with any questions you run into.

I hope to see a game from you someday.

              Peace.

                1) With a little work and understanding, you can alter the default battle system to your liking or create your own.

                2) If the characters in your game are only looking/going two directions, it's because they're being told to. You could have them do other stuff, such as wander around town, stopping to look at stuff every once in a while.

                3) I fail to see how RPGM2 is like the Jetsons.

Just so you know. And don't worry, lots of people here hate the default battle system also.
"What if like...there was an exact copy of you somewhere, except they're the opposite gender, like you guys could literally have a freaky friday moment and nothing would change. Imagine the best friendship that could be found there."

                  Re: RPGMaker 2 is HARD!!!

One piece of advice is to start your first game on Easy and set the preferences to Hard. This will give you all the preset stuff and open up all the complex stuff.

Study the scripts. My FAQ (mentioned above) will help you in this area since all the scripts are in the FAQ (Thanks to RPG Learner) along with explinations of what all the variables and flags do.

Press the help button (Start) often. There is a great deal of information build into the game if you take the time to look for it. The instruction manual only gives you the basics (make sure you do learn the basics first). Note that my FAQ points out a few errors and omisions in the help files.

Start with something simple. Use the preset stuff to create a short Dragon Warrior style game. This will help you get started in figuring out that things do.

Mess up the scripts. You can always reset the game if something goes wrong. Try out a lot of different things and see what happens. If you love experimenting, RPG Maker 2 is the best thing going. You'll be amazed at what you can do once you start messing around with everything.

Something you want that's not in the maker? Use VFX. You can make almost anything with VFX if you have the time and talent to do it. It might be hard at first, but once you learn how to make VFX, you'll be making all kinds of crazy things.

When all else fails, come and ask us. Most of us have been through all the hardships before. Why waste valuable time cursing that you can't do something where someone here has probably already done it or found a way around it. As long as you're willing to learn the basics, most people don't mind answering some questions.

Keep at it and good luck.

P.S. Get a Max Drive and download other peoples games. Seeing what others have done can be a big insparation as to what you can do. Besides there are a few really good games being put out right now that are worth playing.

It takes a while to figure out. I only have one game that Im still working on, and its only becuase I have friends counting on me to make the game (Ive spent two years on it, and I only have about 30 minutes of gameplay). However, now that RPGM3 is coming out, I may remake it on that one. Maybe you should do that too.

                      Re: RPGMaker 2 is HARD!!!

True, RPGM2 is hard, but the reward in doing stuff in this is much more better than RPGM1. I say that because after you've sat and tried doing something for awhile, and finally pulled it off, you feel like you've just figured out Einsteins E=MC squared formula (well, not exactly, but its a good feeling )

As RPGM3 draws near, I've noticed that more and more people whom have recently joined this community advise others to wait for RPGM3 rather then 2, and while it will be simpler, it can't always fulfill on what you had hoped a game to be.

Either way, my tip is to just sit with the program for awhile, toss in a few script commands, see what it does, and you'll get a idea on how you can arrange them to make something, or so it was for me.

                      Welcome to the community though

                        Re: RPGMaker 2 is HARD!!!

RPGM2 is a b'otch to learn. Still, if you have the patience and vision to make something good with it, you will find it to be a great 3-D RPGM. RPGM3 will have nowhere near the flexibility both in terms of graphics and game mechanics.

If you want to wait for something else, wait for RPGM XP, which will have all the graphical customization you could ever want in a 2-D RPGM, with customizable game mechanics like RPGM2 (Perhaps quite a bit more customizability).

Personally, RPGM1 is more or less dead to me because of my lack of a Dex Drive. RPGM2 still has lots of untapped potential, though, so I can't discount it yet.

                          Re: RPGMaker 2 is HARD!!!

I can understand the frustration of a lot of people who have tried to use RPGM2. I actually tried and quit RPGM2 when it first came out because I had such a hard time with it. Recently, though, I decided to pick it up again (found a new copy for just under $20 at a Gamestop) and for some odd reason, I'm glad I did.

Yes, RPGM2 is very complex. One of my biggest problems was that I couldn't get an event or variable to work and it took an hour of digging through scripts and events to even begin to figure out why. It was frustrating enough to make me hurl my controller across the room. I wish I had known about this site sooner, it probably would have saved me several headaches and emotional breakdowns.

I'm just working on something simple for my RPG. No ground-breaking CBS' or menus, just using most of the pre-made stuff for starters. Maybe muck around with the Visual Editor since that was one of the few things I had gotten the hang of. At least now I know of a place to look once I start working on the scripts and Events.

I see how customizable rpg mkaer 2 is, but in my opinion, it's just not worth it. And the thing about the jetsons, you just kind of glide across a map. Which was fun for awhile....

                              My advice:

                              1. Never give up

                              2. Be stubborn about giving up

                              3. Look around, play with the things provided, check out the pre-made game, "Fu-Ma", and look at it's scripts (there's people here that can help you if you can't find anything in it's scripts), use the materials provided for you (DW's guide, Tips and Tricks topic, other people's game, etc....

The RPGM Pavilion and it's members are here to help, so don't sweat it.
Just ask nicely and help will come.
