Re: Pat Robertson says US should Assassinate Hugo Chavez!

I think he's a bloated old gas bag and a ****-poor example of a "christian," especially if he's actively condoning breaking one of the more well-known ten commandments. What a hypocrite. God is love... NOW KILL!

    Also, this is pretty low-
"If they look over the course of 100 years, I think the gradual erosion of the consensus that's held our country together is probably more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings,"
    ...he also refused to apologize...
    What a nice fellow.

    Oh wait-
In October 2003, Robertson, criticizing the State Department during an interview on "The 700 Club," said "maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom to shake things up," referring to the nickname for the department's headquarters in Washington.
I think Pat Robertson needs to go read his bible again. That, or give up hiding behind this christian facade when he wants to push his insane political beliefs on others. But if he didn't have the backing of all those conservative christians, I doubt anyone would take him all that seriously.

Yeah, I thought you'd like that one.

People like that scare me more than terrorists. I do not like terrorists, or condone their behaviour on any level, but they are somehow less scary.

I still think The Crusades are shaping the present far more than anybody wants to admit.

It wont work, but I'll say it again...

      Peace.

people like that are terrorists. religious extremists who subscribe to their own self serving, violent interpretation of a religion that normally preaches unity and understanding. just that nobody pays any attention until they actually blow something up.

He gives true Christians a bad name. Not necessarily for what he said, so much as that when called on it he would not apologize. It was insensitive and inappropriate. Patty Robertson, read my siggy...

I think Chavez should cut all of Venezuela's oil shipments to the U.S. immediately. It's about time this country learned to use less of it. Let China have it.

Anyone catch old Rumsfeld denouncing Robertson's statement and saying that this administration's policy does not include assassination because it is illegal? Classic. Especially since this government has helped fund two attempted assassinations and a coup against this guy already, along with that illegal 'war' in Iraq and illegal Homeland Security Agency...

Funny, I agree with everything you said except "Let China have it. China scares me. I don't think they should get any more oil. They are already set to buy Unocal, one of our few remaining oil companies. If they get that too we'll be in trouble.

Yes, we need to use less oil, but not by giving ours to a Communist country bent upon building up their military to be "the best in the world." Anyone know why it is illegal to do business with Cuba (because they are Communist) yet business with China (another Communist country) is booming?

                But back to the topic...

I don't know if I was more surprised by the statement by PR or the lack of response by the FCC. This is not free speech. You can not yell fire in a theater any more than you can say that anyone should be assassinated.

The FCC sure got upset over a woman's breast being exposed at the super bowl, but inciting terrorist activities (and killing leaders of other countries is terrorism) is OK?

In England, under their new laws, Pat Robertson could be deported for saying such things.

                So let's deport him!

                I wont miss him.

                Peace.

What if there really is a fire in the theatre?

As much as I despise that fundamentalist hack, I do think he should be allowed to say what he did. Just as much as someone should be allowed to state that they'd like to see Bush, Cheney, or Rove shot or that some foreign nation should attempt to assassinate either of them, as their own opinion.

Of course, this government, being the good hypocrites they are, would arrest those who claim they'd like to see Bush or his administration members killed, but would cheer Robertson calling for the assassination of a foreign leader and then sucking up to the media by comically denouncing him and making their own words irrellivent at the same time with their hypocracy.

Robertson linking Chavez to Islamic extremists, with the quote that Chavez was transforming Venezuela into "a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism all over the continent" is just plain laughable. Robertson's a real fruitcake!

But I do indeed agree with you about the FCC. What a bunch of hypocrites. Maybe a bare breast isn't so bad after all, if they let things such as this go on without a peep given their supposed 'moral values'. Of course, I'd like the FCC to be either reformed to accomodate the U.S. Constitution or to be dismantled.

As to my feelings on Chavez:

I hope this guy prospers. I may not agree with his platform much, but at least he's a leader that looks out for his own people and works for his own people, and not the other way around. For some to claim he's a dictator is assinine considering he was democratically elected with an approval rating conducted by independent pollsters repeatedly in excess of 65%. The white aristocracy and the corporations hate him, but the Venezuelean people who are not of European descent, composing the majority, like what he is doing for them. He gives them hope that they can have a voice, and that the poor can see things improve for them and that they can reclaim their country from predatory corporations. He even called Bush a 'pendejo', aka a pubic hair.

I'm willing to bet America will soon fund or even themselves attempt another coup or assassination of Chavez is he cuts off the oil. But do that he should: it's not America's oil and it will be hilarious to see the U.S. government and corporations shift their propaganda campaign from Iran to Venezuela.

As to China, they scare me too. But if they gain access to that oil and can boost their economy, it just might keep them from meddling with other countries when things turn even more sour as the oil depletes. Venezuela could meet China's demand, and that would keep them away from Japan's offshore rigs.

Nope.If a theater catches fire you must quietly whisper "fire" during the intermission.

Good defense of Patty's right to say that, but I think it still falls in to the "incitement" category on a technicality... He said "We" should kill him, not "Somebody" should do so.

One is generalized and not directed at anyone with the power to act, while his statements were clearly directed at our Government (viz their response).

I also agree that Chavez is not the monster we make him out to be, but those polls can not be trusted... Saddam had a 100% approval rating in Iraq.

Let's just hope that all this leads to progress. He did, after all, draw attention to the whole "Venezuala Issue" which has been largely ignored lately.

And I'm glad somebody agrees about the FCC! I tried pointing this out to folks at work (Scientists even) and they were very dismissive... even the Bush-Haters.

Back t the world of dreams...

The difference comes from Saddam's approval having been arived from polls conducted by his crooked government. Independent polls are far more trustworthy.

Well, the following article might be a good indicator, even if it's just an empty promise virtually impossible to fulfill:

Chavez offers cheap gas to poor in U.S.

                      Tuesday, August 23, 2005; Posted: 7:29 p.m. EDT (23:29 GMT)

HAVANA, Cuba (Reuters) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, popular with the poor at home, offered on Tuesday to help needy Americans with cheap supplies of gasoline.

"We want to sell gasoline and heating fuel directly to poor communities in the United States," the populist leader told reporters at the end of a visit to Communist-run Cuba.

Chavez did not say how Venezuela would go about providing gasoline to poor communities. Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA owns Citgo, which has 14,000 gas stations in the United States.

The offer may sound attractive to Americans feeling pinched by soaring prices at the pump but not to the U.S. government, which sees Chavez as a left-wing troublemaker in Latin America.

Gasoline is cheaper than mineral water in oil-producing Venezuela, where consumers can fill their tanks for less than $2. Average gas prices have risen to $2.61 a gallon in the United States, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Chavez said Venezuela could supply gasoline to Americans at half the price they now pay if intermediaries who "speculated ... and exploited consumers" were cut out.

Venezuela supplies Cuba with generously financed oil and plans to help Caribbean nations foot their oil bills.

Chavez, in Cuba to attend the graduation of Cuban-trained doctors from 28 countries, was seen off at the airport by Cuban President Fidel Castro. Washington has accused the two leaders of being a destabilizing influence in South America.

Chavez and Castro offered to give poor Americans free health care and train doctors free of charge.

                        He apologized!!

It was pretty funny. First he denied calling for assassination, saying all he said was "take him out" which can mean many things.

Then they showed footage of him stating in no uncertain terms that "since Mr. Chavez thinks we want to assassinate him, maybe we ought to do it."

So then he apologized and said it was wrong to call for an assassination.

A fun ending to a fun distraction.
