    Do you support yourself?

This topic is made out of response to Lopez's comment in the Bin Laden topic.

Just out of curiosity. I won't judge people that don't--I have many friends who are unable to. We're not in a great situation right now as a nation.

Yes, I fully support myself. Have so for a little over a year. I just turned 22. And I haven't lived in my parents house since 2008.

I support myself as long as I am employed. Given that my employment situation has been unstable, I have alternated between living on my own and living with my parents.

I'm going to need a few years of stable, uninterrupted, full-time employment before I have accumulated the resources needed to not only live on my own, but to do so off grid without relying on society for my sustenance needs.

Having been discharged honorably, I currently live with my folks while using the GI bill to pay off college. I could live on my own, and the government gives me money to do so, but my folks charge a paltry sum as rent and the rest of the money is pocketed. I work a job at Gamestop part time while majoring in Information Systems Technology.

I did, until I graduated and lost my student job. I had to pay for my last full year, so I didn't have enough money saved after graduation to stay away. So, now I'm at home being a "loser spilling off nonsense" with my degree on my wall while I try to find a job.

As soon as I get one, I am out of here, again.

No. Not really. Not for lack of trying. My father had to help me with rent this month. And... several of the months prior to that. I currently work as a temp in a catering company. I've been meaning to look for a real job this past year, but instead have been taking temporary gigs on the side.

My roommates do. One of them says their father would help in an emergency, but she manages without.

Yes I do, but I think I've hit the age where it's nothing to brag about.

I support myself, and have for about 7 years now. My little sister lives with me while she's going to school and I help her out (rent-free, power, internet,etc.).

I've got nothing but empathy for recent and soon-to-be college grads. This recession and re-structuring of our economy has set them back 5-8 years.

Yup...but I also know there is no such thing as a self made man.

I'm able to support myself, yeah.

I'm fortunate to have a good paying job with benefits. Also not having to pay rent to my folks when I was still living with them helped me save up enough money to get my own place.

                      Re: Do you support yourself?

When I came back from college after two years, I stayed at home for another 2 years or so (until I was 21, I think). Moved back in for about 7-9 months or so at one point (1997, maybe?). Other than those two periods, I've been supporting myself since I came back from college in 1991.....damn. That's 20 years now.

As for "supporting" myself, no. I do not really support anything I do. I do not support buying worthless crap. I do not support working at a job selling people things they do not need. I do not support slothing out and being unmotivated to work on a creative endeavor. But I do all of these myself. So, no, I really do not support myself in anything I do.

Depending on my motivation level (heh...), I might continue this/my response to Biggie elsewhere.

I lived on my own for about 4 years after getting out of highschool, but for the last 2 years or so Ive been living back at home working for my dads business just saving up money.

Nope. I'm still in high school, so it would be pretty dumb for me to move out right now.

I live with my mother but I support both of us. She doesn't have a dime to her name.
