He's flyin' in yo backyard, snatchin' yo birdies up...

So my parents had to take down their birdfeeder...why? Because a local hawk kept coming by and picking up the birdies as they ate. Even though they took the birdhouse down, they still see it flying overhead all the time. They think it was forced here from overdevelopment of the area, when it used to live in some of the wooded areas that are not houses.

Anyone else have any incidents like this, seeing wildlife they normally wouldn't because of this? We've also had a good amount of parrots spotted here that warm themselves w/ powerlines.

We have a hawk that hunts the birds that hang out at our birdfeeders. My mom won't take the birdfeeders down though. She wants the hawk to grab a red squirrel that attacks birds and other squirrels that try to use the feeders.

The birdfeeder is fulfilling it's purpose. The hawk is a bird.

Many Hawk species are endangered, don't do anything rash.

Also, are you sure its a hawk? Falcons are pretty common in urban areas too.

We still have hawks, buzzards, and owls in this area. There are a lot of wild parakeets that like to hang out at park down the street. One time my house mates found an owl that was in the process of swooping down and killing a bluejay when both birds were struck by a car.

If you ever visit a park, or other urban green area, in South Florida, there's a good chance you'll see a few beautiful green-and-yellow parrot-ish birds flying around in the trees. It's easy to miss them in the trees if you aren't paying attention and they happen to not be making noise.

As far as I know, they joined the South Florida "ecosystem" in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew swept through Miami and released a few of them from captivity at the Parrot Jungle. They survived, thrived, and can be found all over the area now - I live a good 30 miles away and they're a common sight.

They're considered a pest at times, but I absolutely love 'em.
