Your favorite RPG ever, and why?

Sorry if this thread has been created before. I searched and couldn't find it. Bump it if it exists. I guess we can include all types of RPGs. And if you can't pick just one, grow a pair and just do it.

Mine:

Dragon Quest 8

Why:

Old school RPG design polished to perfection with a fully 3D beautifully cell shaded graphics. Monster battle arena was awesome. And the little details like changing weapons and clothing actually changed visually. The weapon class structure enticed me to play it twice. After the game was a over a huge area was opened for added play time. Story was good and not too convoluted, my biggest RPG complaint.

Perfect in every detail.

Final Fantasy Tactics, assuming we're lumping SRPGs in with the parent genre. If not, Chrono Trigger. Both for largely the same reasons: it's hard to find anything about either of them that doesn't stand out above its peers. Gameplay, writing, characters, music...you name it.

Baldurs Gate 2.

Has some of the best characters, writing, even gameplay is nice and smooth. It's a wonder why nobody has tried to copy it. Possibly because the effort is just too much.

Its probably because the market for Baldur's Gate style games is over-saturated with Baldur's Gate games. They released a half-dozen (or more) games using the same engine.

Earthbound. Its got classic tried-and-true rpg mechanics with a whole new flavor and great sense of humor.

Dragon Quest VIII. Never played a game so polished in it's own genre. That and the music is fantastic.

Kotor, Mass Effect, and Final Fantasy VII are up there too.

Dragon Quest VIII has one of the worst soundtracks in the series. And the orstration is awful. Damn wooden block in every song, driving me crazy.

With the exception of FF 12, these are all good answers. As for DQ 8's music....don't remember it much. Which implies it was neither excellent or awful.

I'm also partial to Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound, Suikoden II, and the Lunar games.

You Dragon Quest VIII enthusiasts should give IX a shot. When I finally finished the game, my timer was over 100hrs and there's still so much more for me I could do. They got western design sensibilities in my Dragon Quest!

And Loki hates the soundtrack, so you know it's good.
