Sooooooo...I did stand-up at an open mic at a local place because my bf said I should. I've been a fan of stand-up my whole life, and my favorite comedians have been George Carlin, Patton Oswalt, Mitch Hedberg, Richard Jeni, Marc Maron, Louis C.K. I had only a couple hours to prepare and drum up some material and...I did surprisingly well.
I had 5 minutes and I was a bit short. I had a bunch of additional jokes that I ****ing forgot centered around 3 bits (which is incredibly frustrating because I had some good ones). My set consisted of observational, a bit more introspective stuff, then I finished w/ a story about hanging out w/ my gay friends (yes I mentioned I was too). The best part is I finished strong. I KILLED on my last bit, got a big laugh from the room on the punchline...felt so good to finish strong and I got a really nice applause.
Some jokes I could've sworn would go better didn't so much, and I had no clue the ending would go over as well as it did. Still, the parts I thought were funny got a reaction, which was very self assuring. Let me tell you, the whole experience was invigorating as hell. This is something that was on my bucket list forever and I finally did it, and it didn't blow up in my face. At least this time.
I want to do it again and if I do, I'll record it and post it on the interwebs for you guys. I'm not going to say it'll be a career thing or anything but...I definitely want to do it again and maybe be a bit of a hobby on the side, see where it leads...which is probably no where, but who gives a ****? It was fun.
I wanted to ask, have any of you other guys dabbled in stand-up? I could definitely see a lot of you guys giving it a shot.
