    Breaking Bad

Just watched a rerun of the pilot tonight, and it reminded me of everything that makes this arguably the best show currently on TV. The truly dark comedy amidst all the drama, the stark brutality, the cheeky Mr. Wizard-meets-MacGyver science elements, stellar performances by absolutely everyone involved (and I'm glad it got Cranston the Emmys he should have already had on his mantle from his underrated work on Malcolm in the Middle)...it started great and just got better. Can't wait for the next season in July. The cliffhanger last year was big stuff indeed, and further proof that the once-lovable roguish chemist has become hollowed-out inside, deadened by the constant toll of his lifestyle and the choices that he's made. He sacrificed his soul back in the show's best episode, the next-to-last one in season 2. But this still might qualify as the worst thing he's been involved in. So far.

I've only seen two episodes of Breaking Bad. They are very good, from what I saw.

And I agree with your Cranston comment. Great actor.

    And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope

That's the pisser. Like Mad Men, its unparalleled critical acclaim and awards love is equaled only by its mediocre to poor ratings, even by cable standards. There just aren't many people watching. It's so much less challenging to watch The Closer or Law and Order Criminal Intent, I guess. Or Jersey Shore, God help us all.

But as long as they keep renewing it, I don't care. I doubt Breaking Bad would go for too many more seasons if the ratings were stellar; as attached as I am to the world it has built, it can't persist in a long-term situation. Something's gotta give.

I think the concepts behind both shows are a little insular and limited in appeal for them to break out into huge mega-success.

I think the public is, for the most part, too stupid to willingly embrace this level of complexity in its entertainment. They prove this at every opportunity.

Saul is hilarious. Such an excellent addition to the cast. As is his little private detective/go-to hitman guy, who really came into his own at the end of season 3.

And that's only true when I say it, Mora. Try to keep up.

My girlfriend was watched one of the season finales, and something happened and she shrieked, "WHAT?!"

I was so startled I tossed my PSP into the air, it spun in a circle, and then landed in my hands again

Is this the one about the high school chemistry teacher who cooks crystal meth?

He was. Now he's just the meth cooker who cooks meth.

And if Breaking Bad was Trigun, I would have completely lost interest after about 10 episodes. Which did not happen.
