    Foodstuffs and cookery

How often do you cook meals for yourself?

I cook a lot of meals for myself, because I know what I like, and it's cheaper than eating out.

If you don't cook for yourself, do you wish you could? What's keeping you from cooking more?

I cook meals all the time, but only easy stuff like orange death, BBQ etc. due to location.

    And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope

it's a matter of not knowing how/what to cook, and that i don't have my own place yet.
      ...and that's why.

I'm pretty much the de facto chef of the house; I'm making dinner about 5-6 nights a week. It's alright; I enjoy it quite a bit most of the time, especially when I get to be somewhat creative.

I wanna learn how to cook, and bought the first-party DS instruction games to that effect, but my parents aren't being cooperative with actually giving me a chance to make anything. They get flustered by me taking instructions from my DS and don't want to eat any of the dishes that I'm curious to attempt.

So we're at a stalemate. Basically they're withholding the opportunity to cook a family meal unless I cook it according to their demands, whereas I wanna learn to cook using my own methods.

I'm a good baker and know my way around the kitchen. Was making some primo egg white omelette's exclusively for a while, really getting the protein in my diet. My mom taught me how to make all sorts of old school italian things, from the sauce to the meatballs. Takes too long to cook, is usually too unhealthy.

But now that work's picked up again I hardly have time to cook for myself or get groceries. So I'm a bagel-chomping NYC'ite so far.

When I cook, it's either a bowl of broccoli w/ hot sauce or chicken w/ a condiment (hot giardenara peppers, mandarin sauce, orange sauce) I munch on pita chips and hummus for a snack (bananas at work).

Usually, I do not cook for just myself, as it seems like a waste of time. For the house, I'll occasionally cook chili or soup or lasagna. If I have a female guest over, I'll usually cook chicken or fish (salmon or something good, usually, not fish sticks). And lately, I'll go on a grocery shopping binge every few months or so, and then spend an entire day cooking enough food to last for a month worth of breakfasts/lunches and individually freeze the portions to bring to work every day.

I cook when I want spaghetti, chili, sloppy joes, stir-fry, hamburgers, or other various unhealthy things.

Because I'm too lazy to make my own from scratch, my spaghetti usually starts with a storebought traditional chunky sauce, no added flavors or anything, just the tomatoes and chunks of vegetables. Then I do a bunch of fresh veggies: about half a tomato; yellow, red, and green bell peppers for flavor and appearance; zucchini; mushrooms; a small amount of garlic (not powder or salt, actual garlic); rosemary leaves and a pinch of basil. If I know the people I'm making it for don't mind some spice I add in some cayenne pepper and a jalapeno, plus some freshly-ground cracked pepper. Ground turkey if it's not too expensive, otherwise lean ground beef. Spaghetti noodles are wheat; garlic toast is bakery italian or wheat, real butter, fresh-ground sea salt mixed with some actual minced garlic instead of garlic salt. Add on the parmesan if that's your thing and you've got yourself a tasty (and perhaps spicy) dish.

It's one of the only things I really enjoy making, too. The rest is simply because I want that particular thing to eat, spaghetti is because there's a simple pleasure in preparing a meal that happens in various stages. It's like a challenge in multi-tasking deliciousness.

edit: Mora, can't you just cook something when your parents aren't around? Or you know, move out?

My cooking consists of me mashing together already made or nearly-made food into "interesting"(my word for it) or "disgusting"(everyone else's word for it) combinations. And most of it is just playing around with sauces.

I cook all the damn time. I work in a kitchen, so I get to create a free meal every day. At home, I'll usually make one-pan stir-frys.

Then there are Family Dinner Nights, where my friends and I cook a giant meal and drink a bunch of beer. All of my friends are awesome cooks, and it helps to know some amazing bakers.

A friend of mine used to work in a seafood department, so he would bring home tons of top-quality salmon, shrimp, lobster, tuna, etc. There have been many Sushi Nights. Sushi is easy as hell to prepare.

Cooking is not hard. People seem to be frightened of the idea. It can be as simple as you want. You don't really need to follow recipes to a tee (unless you're baking, there's a lot of science in there ) or at all. Just heat up some food.

While it may be easy to prepare, it wasn't until recently that I found a place in OKC that wasn't an hour away that sold the type of stuff I needed to make it. =(

Sure, I'll tell her to go over the house of some dude I quasi-know from the internet to cook. She'll be down.
