Killer Convicted, Despite GTA Insanity Defense

An Alabama jury considering the case of 20 year old Devin Moore for the murder of three police officers has rejected his insanity defense and claims that he was unduly influenced by Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

The jury deliberated for just over an hour before convicting Moore of capital murder, for which he could receive the death penalty. Defense lawyers had partly blamed Moore’s actions on the hours he spent playing video games from the Grand Theft Auto series as well as post-traumatic stress disorder triggered by childhood abuse. Moore had pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental defect.

The judge barred jurors from hearing testimony linking the 2003 shootings to the games, despite Moore’s comments after his arrest that “Life is a video game; everybody has to die sometime.” Prosecutor Lyn Durham said Tuesday that Moore knew what he was doing when he grabbed a patrolman’s gun and killed two officers and a radio dispatcher. “And he knew it was wrong,” she said.

A civil suit filed on behalf of the victims' families by notorious “anti-game lawyer” Jack Thompson is now expected to begin after sentencing is carried out. Wal-Mart and GameStop are both named in the suit, as well as Sony and publisher Take-Two Interactive.

"What we're saying is that Devin Moore was, in effect, trained to do what he did. He was given a murder simulator," said Thompson, who was recently named one of the American Civil Liberties Union's top 10 censors, in a "60 Minutes" interview.

Well, that was a good read until I seen Thompsons name......

If a "murder simulator" like GTA qualifies as being trained to kill, then flight simulator games qualify as flight training. Everyone who plays flight sims should send Thompson correspondance asking him to represent them in a suit demanding a pilot's license. Maybe that'll help him see how illogical his statement is.

Then go ahead and try to get into a pro race and if they say your license isn't valid, call Thompson. He'll either have to prove video game = training, or give up his insane campaigns against violent games. Or (more likely) simply prove himself to be the fool he is.

He isn't a fool, he's a greedy lawyer trying to take advantage of the loopholes in the American justice system and the position Rockstar put the games industry in to gain fame and fortune. Not like that's any better, though.

I didn't realize GTA's targeting system was identical to firing an actual gun.

We need to make a Jack Thompson RPG, where he constantly dies in extremely violent ways, but always seems to come back, until his final death at the end.

Then spread it around the internet.

Someone needs to go GTA on Jack Thompson.

Well, what ****es me off more then anything is the fact that the judge and jury saw right through this claim of it being a videogames fault. They said, "he knew what he was doing was wrong".

To me, thats saying that people aren't that gullable when it comes to games and murdering, YET jack somehow is still flying in and getting involved despite the fact that the jury disreguarded any claim about GTA.

...and he claims all this bull**** about games being simulations, well I just conquered the world campaign in rise of nations on hard, so therefore I demand the US government give me a job as a war tactition, because Im trained dammit.

And then hacks like Hitlory Klinton and Joe Lieberman go around parrotting this sleazy lawyer's flawed logic to appease the idiot security moms wanting a scapegoat to magically invalidate their own incompetance in child rearing.
