Now tell me *your* story about how you came to the Pavilion. Or don't. :p

I'm interested in how some of you came about. While I've been a Pavilionite for quite some time, my inactivity in some episodes of my life caused me to miss things here and there and that includes new members. While this may help me a bit on my side project with RPG Maker, it isn't just about that, I'd really like to know more about you all if you are willing to share your story (and take it somewhat but not too seriously, I suppose). So I'll start by telling about how I came around here and what few memories I have of the place and maybe if others feel like telling me about themselves, I may learn something about them, for once. Or don't.

    ----------------

I originally lurked the RPG Maker Pavilion in late 2000-early 2001. RPG Maker was a present for my birthday, so I looked up the site and I was skeptical of how the community was, originally. The (then) EZboard community was a bit hectic compared to what it is today, but I was still getting around the learning curve of RPG Maker. So I would occasionally glance over at the Tips & Tricks forum where Intro1 and a few others would post tricks and general advice. There I sort-of found a new "hobby-within-a-hobby," I suppose, because I was amazed by what creative things one could do with it at the time. So I just focused on discorvering new tricks and loopholes, it was half of what made the game maker so much fun to me.

However as far in the crazy community that was, I wasn't sure about joining yet. What originally set me off about the Pavilion, impression-wise, was something that I never understood then and coincidently (apparently) was something what made Ryner famous here: "The E-Mail from Squaresoft" prank. I can't remember how, but after some time passed I asked another pavilionite (by e-mail, I think) about the site. She (at least, I'm assuming she) was called Vampasia at the old Pavilion and was actually inactive at the time from then on, from what I can remember.

Vampasia gave her honest thoughts of the site, and also told me about the RPG Maker Garden having a more "laid-back" atmosphere. So I joined and posted there for a while as Kaerul. There I also posted my original "Fleshing Out A Game" thread, which now to me is like what the Star Wars: Holiday Special is to George Lucas. Anyway...

I don't quite remember but according to my oldest account I "officially" joined the Pavilion as an official poster at December 4th, 2001...a bit to the annoyance of Ryner and I seem to remember not being on Marlwolf's or Valk's good side originally either because I would argue about silly things somewhat often. Even more so, I would criticize how the staff did things in a passive-aggressive, sarcastic stance. I had annoying and snippy comments or threads that occasionally would get the topic locked from time to time, too. So I mostly stuck with the Tips & Tricks area after a while and went back to posting tips, oddly enough I was actually nice to people there.

I see some irony to this, as I was skeptical of joining a circle of people I thought were jerks when many times I acted like one once I did. And I seem to like the people that I didn't like originally. But I do apologize for all that, for what it is worth, by the way. Although, I don't ever remember being banned, though, so I guess I wasn't that bad...or active, either.

The only real "big events" that I remember being there for (at the moment) was Blitz's Departure (vaguely) and the RPGM2k Attack. As chaotic as the attack was, two funny moments still stick with me for some reason:

    1. This wierd "e-interrogation" somehow started on the board between the Pavilion (including Blaze and some other staff) and the apparent attackers. I don't remember the details of exactly how that happened, but it in itself was great but funny in a way. It was an interrogation...on the internet. Just priceless.

    2. This stuck with me most of all and I can never shake it when that event comes to mind. During the interrogation, one of us Pavilionites posted something along the lines of "Haha. This reminds me of an RPG story!" after some of the attackers stated why they did what they did. Probably the funniest thing I read that day while that all went down.

Anyways, that's I can remember to tell. If someone feels like something here shouldn't have been referenced or brought up, let me know or remove it yourself, if you'd like. I don't want to offend anyone.

Somehow, I had a feeling you would reply like that.

It's all because I'm harder than picking this year's Final Four.

Re: Now tell me *your* story about how you came to the Pavilion. Or don't.

i joined this site sometime back around november 2000 i think. i remember a friend telling me how rpg maker was coming out and it would allow you to make a game like i used to do with another computer program. when it did come out i rented it a few times and couldnt make much of the switching so i turned to the online scene to see if i could figure it out.

i did a classic google search and found this site back in its earlier stages and decided to see what was going on. i liked the help i saw and decided to contribute myself when i started experimenting more with the software. i joined the white board chat and spent plenty of hours talking to people.

i stayed for a few years but the site slowed down considerably and ran out of good topics so i took a hiatus and came back every year or so with a relaunch of rpg maker enthusiasm. 3 years ago i came back for the final time and stayed.

what i remember most back then was the drama. so much internet bull**** that you find with online communities. over the years we have all mellowed out, making this site enjoyable.

beyond that the square soft letter, mora musk, pavilion opera colab, pavilion poster colab, owl mess, eiko reveal, misty reveal, angles drama, mistophista, alazars damn egm win, karim marriage topic, rpgm2k hackers, garden rivalry, and a ****load of other stuff that happened. a lot has happened in 10 years of being an online community. that has to be some kind of record against internet mortality.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!
Card Three is released! You can find it here!

At the moment, I'm not sure what I'm finding ironic about this yet. But I'll think of it.

Basically this. I got RPGM3 and needed more info, and GameFAQs sucked at providing it. I found it here.

                    Oh and derp. Always derp.

If you want my REAL story...

I knew about this place since around October 2000. RPG Maker had both me and Gwommy PUMPED, but I never did actually end up buying the game myself. So I just kinda lurked around here to see what everyone was doing with it.

Then...one day Gwommy was showing me some of the stuff Smurtle was posting, and we both thought it would be funny to mess with him. So I started my "Death of Smurtle" account, which ended up getting me banned, for pretty obvious and justifiable reasons.

Then I pleaded and pleaded with the admins to get reinstated. Which I did. And that's when my glorious reign begin. I gained infamy by describing my nether-stick as a towel rack. And fighting with Omni over Tifa's boobs.

Anybody worth anything knows the story from there. If you really want more details, consult your local library.

I can here via the Agetec-Metropolis-Skyler forum ring back when everyone used Ezboard(originally used the Ninebreaker moniker).

Lurked alot, trolled once. Surprisingly wasn't banned.

                        And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope

Yeah, internet 1999 was a sad, pathetic tale. AGETEC had the old list-serv style board where everything was expandable text, and boy did EZ-Board look and work so sweet compared to it.

Brings back memories about how every 6 months we would cycle EZ-boards since they charged such a ridiculous amount based on bandwidth. They failed so hard because no one in their right mind was going to give them $600 a month for bandwidth cost for a 1000 member board.

It was late 2006, and the douchebag you people know as The True Coolness was staying in the other bedroom of my palatial trailer in Athens. He'd just finished up at Tech, was looking for a job and doing a lot of programming on his site (as well as a fair bit of work on his RPGMaker 2 game, Order of Chaos). At the time he was also judging one of your contests. I saw him playing a couple games for it (as I recall, two were pretty awful and one was decent), inquired about it, found out he was an admin on this forum, and figured I'd come on here and see what was what. Didn't intend to tell him; that seemed like half the fun. Other half was the third person thing; had a whim to do it, and a new forum seemed the ideal place. So, I did. Good times.

                              Bingo.

Wasn't sure if I remembered that correctly and I didn't. I didn't think it was that often. Again, I wasn't as active then so I don't quite have all of my facts straight. Thanks.
