Re: Goodbye, Rick Snyder (or, Michigan is screwed)
Thanks for editing my own post for me.
Anyways, Rick Snyder is using the U.S. Constitution as his toilet paper, and soon I think the Wisconsin protests will seem like small potatoes compared to what will happen here in the state of Michigan...Last edited by Funk; 03-10-2011, 11:45 PM.Lil' Bean is here!

Re: Goodbye, Rick Snyder (or, Michigan is screwed)
I try not to talk too much politics on this forum, but oh boy is it scary how the Republican brass want to tear up our imperfect democracy and replace it with a kleptocratic tyranny-by-minority.
Most American conservatives don't want this, which is why they shouldn't vote for the so-called GOP.

Re: Goodbye, Rick Snyder (or, Michigan is screwed)
I wouldn't be so anti-Republican if they were fiscally responsible and justified their ideology through actual fiscal conservatism. That said, the reason why I cannot fathom why anyone would vote for these people is being justified, it seems, each and every day.
LOL RAISE TAXES ON TEH POOR. GIVE THAT MONEY TO CORPORATIONS.
Fine, GOP, promote raising taxes on the poor and defunding social programs you hate--but when you in the same bill introduce corporate tax breaks and give that money away, you are not balancing anything, and you are not being fiscally responsible.
I thought the whole idea of calling Democrats and Obama "socialist" was because he wasn't letting the free market influence where the dollars went. Good to know the GOP is willing to force you to give your money to corporations you might not ever buy from. That is PURE FREE MARKET CAPITALISM.
Too bad elected Democrats don't have the balls to be populist anymore.Last edited by Mcardy; 03-11-2011, 04:12 AM.

Re: Goodbye, Rick Snyder (or, Michigan is screwed)
What exactly do you want Synder to do?
This state is a basket case. There are no jobs here. There are no big corporations here outside of the Big 3 and Google's tiny Ann Arbor outpost and the utility companies. I've been applying to jobs like crazy the last few months (now that I'm truly trying to enter the real world) and I've found one job in this state that even mildly interested me. One. Everyone with half a brain gets their degree and GTFO as soon as possible. The unemployment rate in the city of Detroit alone is like 50%.
Synder really needed to do more. They barely rolled back spending to 08 levels, when it should be rolled back to 1990s levels. But at least he's trying to shake things up.

by raising taxes on the poor and elderly, and basically giving that money to corporations. and making it possible for people take over local government without elections.
we don't need that. that's ****ing stupid.

Re: Goodbye, Rick Snyder (or, Michigan is screwed)
In all fairness, the poor and elderly are the only things this state has to raise taxes on. Though I'm not in favor of raising taxes on anyone in this state, any business tax cuts should be matched with spending cuts, not tax hikes.
As for disbanding local governments, not big on that one. But I think a lot of our cities like Flint and Detroit could probably be better managed from Lansing than from their local leaders who've failed them for the last fifty years.
EDIT:
I agree 100%. But I'll extend the statement to how I cannot fathom why anyone would vote Democratic, either. That said, the reason why I cannot fathom why anyone would vote for these people is being justified, it seems, each and every day.Last edited by Sampson; 03-11-2011, 05:44 AM.

You're joking, right? That comment was just a joke aimed and Detroit and Flint. Right? But I think a lot of our cities like Flint and Detroit could probably be better managed from Lansing than from their local leaders who've failed them for the last fifty years.
Tell me you're joking.
...and that's why.

Regardless if how bad they are/were, I wouldn't wish the hundreds of thousands of people living in Detroit to have their government turned over to a Totalitarian authority. It's like saying,
"Yeah, Hitler was bad, but at least he got rid of communism."
or
"Yeah, this tsunami in Japan is terrible, but at least now they aren't killing dolphins."...and that's why.

Re: Goodbye, Rick Snyder (or, Michigan is screwed)
You are speaking from ignorance. Its been said many times, but Detroit is truly a third world city. Greedy, local politicians have ransacked and ravaged that city for years. The state ought to have taken it over long ago. Just do some research on the administration of Coleman Young and the recent scandals of Kilpatrick. Look up some economic statistics. Its unbelievable stuff to people that haven't seen it first hand. You might say, "It can't be that bad" but it is.
The destruction of a state's only major city has disastrous consequences for the entire state. Its pretty difficult to recruit businesses or young talent to come here when you have no real urban center. Every resident of the state of Michigan has a stake in Detroit.
I really don't care all that much, because I don't plan to be a resident six months from now. But if the state is ever going to recover, Detroit needs to be rebuilt. I don't think Synder plans to take it over, as he and Bing appear to be buddy-buddy, but I think the state would be much different today if Lansing had seized control of the city in the 1970's or 80's. Perhaps I wouldn't have to leave then.

Re: Goodbye, Rick Snyder (or, Michigan is screwed)
A post I read on reddit, for the sake of discussion:
It sounds like reporting equal to glenn beck. The people of michigan are not upset about this because the people of michigan aren't stupid enough to know she does not state any facts in here.
- Michigan has one of the lowest senior tax rates. No income is taxed under 100k. his tax is not going to touch social security. Its going to go to put a small tax on pensions. Michigan will still remain a state with one of the lowest taxes overall on seniors.
- The "michigan business tax" that they passed a few years ago has been chasing small business's out of michigan. Its a huge problem that we have dealt with. I have a friend moving his business out of michigan because of this. I believe he is now staying because of snyders proposed changes. Snyder is looking after small business's which are known to to help employment levels the most. Michigan's unemployment is at what level? this is not about stealing from seniors & giving money to corporations Its about balancing the budget & keeping jobs in michigan. The tax cut is for small business's NOT FOR BIG CORPORATIONS
- About the seizing power thing. Detroit public school system is broke. It needs to close 50% of its schools. Do you know how to do this without creating the biggest ****ing mess ever? Pick any big city school system and think about how you would go about closing half the schools? The governor needs the power to fix this. We're talking about seizing control if needs be over some cities that are against "intercity" kids coming into their community. We're not talking about busing kids 1 hr to the suburbs. We're talking about busing them "across the tracks" so to speak. The people on the good side of the tracks don't want the kids from the bad side to come over. They need to all work together to solve this issue but we know they will just **** this all up unless an outsider decides what happens. Michigan governor is the perfect person to fix this issue. Sure 1 small area inside detroit might not be broke while all their neighbors are. This is why he needs power to seize control of everyone. Its a problem that spans multiple cities.
