“There are no visible signs of any toxins that might have caused [the die-off] and our early assessment is that this was oxygen depletion,” Workman said. “This is similar to what we experienced five years ago but that was distinctly a red tide event but there’s no discoloration of the water, no associated foaming in the waves, Workman said. “There are no oil slicks or leaking of substances into the water.”

Depends on the view you take:

Its clearly not normal, and could either be a rare die-off event due unrelated to Human activity, which isn't unheard of(Albeit never this large).

Or, it could be a warning sign that something is critically wrong with oceanic ecosystems. The collapse of secondary consumer is often the best warning sign that something is interfering with the environment, and in this case it would undoubtedly be human-borne.

Depletion of ocean oxygen is a huge anoxic event, people should be more alarmed than they are.

They already killed the gulf. It's going to be a dead zone.

Oceans are big. The events in the Gulf will have global consequences, which is what i was trying to imply.

                    I understand that.

But I wonder if that's really what muse intended to discuss when he made this thread.

Apparently the heavy wind just blew the fish into rough spots that didn't provide sufficient oxygen and died as a result, or so my fisherman friend tells me. Says it's happened a few times before.
