Games you've changed your opinion on over time

I've been playing Heavy Rain ever since my girlfriend wanted to get the Perfect Crime trophy. Altering your ending can be a huge pain since you have to go so far back to hit every flag, and the save system doesn't just let you select the timeline you want to go from.

But man, like... I really enjoyed it this time around. The acting didn't bother me so much, though I still thought it was funny sometimes. The plot twist didn't even bother me because it made more sense to me from a dramatic standpoint. A lot of stuff does, actually. Motifs and character traits makes sense when you view the game as a whole, though that does still vary with the endings - Jayden's addiction and Madison's insomnia could just be loose ends, depending.

Before I respected Heavy Rain begrudgingly. But now, I really like it. Have any of you changed your view like this? Or had the opposite happen?

I used to like Yoshi's Story and defended its easyness by pointing out that you could challenge yourself by trying to collect all 30 melons in each level. Now I think it's stupid that we as players have to challenge ourselves in order to get any satisfaction over what really is a stupidly easy game.

Same thing happened with Mario RPG, actually. It's definately a good game, don't get me wrong. But having played it so many times, it's become so incredibly easy, I pretty much have to put handicaps on myself to get any enjoyment out of it, now. Oh well, there's always Mario RPG Revolution to fall back on.

I used to think FFVII was like high art. It was also the first RPG I ever seriously played and I was like 13 at the time. Now I recognize that while it did many things well, FFVII doesn't have a very good story or characters and that Final Fantasy as a whole, by and large, is targeted to teens, the younger the better.

Not really. My opinion can certainly change over the course of a playthrough. But usually I only come back to a game if I already like it enough to know I'll enjoy the next go round as well.

Demon's Souls, probably. When I first got it over a year ago it kicked my ass back and forth and I didn't enjoy it at all. I think I had beaten Phalanx and that was it.

I just started replaying it last week and I'm somehow remarkably better; I've already beaten Phalanx, the Tower Knight, and the Armor Spider without dying. ...Which is a big deal for me considering my first time around was nothing but frustration and death. Oddly enough, being good at a game as opposed to sucking royally can really make things much more enjoyable.

I waffle a lot but that's what happens when your tastes mature. It happens with all forms of media and I'd rather change my opinion on things rather than always stay true to how I originally felt.

I used to adore Star Ocean 2--and I still kind of do. It's mechanics are what make it fun. Crafting, skills, specialties, pickpocketing, forging documents--there's a surprising depth to the game's sub-systems. But I've come to terms with the game and realize that all these systems supplement a game that's inherently pretty terrible. So I appreciate what it tries to do, and love breaking the game--but the actual game itself? Anime dreck with a horrible battle system.

Fable II. Despite its clankiness and the possibility of screwing yourself in character growth to where you fight the last boss (as Mora made note of previously), I came around to it. I guess the characters are what I liked the most and its 'A-B' freeform format. I used to hate it because that dog kept getting in my way constantly.

                      Street Fighter IV.

I had a great time with it for about a half hour, then I made it to Seth... Then tried fighting him for four hours.

                      Then I played online....

Gears of War and its sequel. used to not be crazy at all about the over-the-top machismo and generic space marines fighting aliens, but after playing cover based shooters like Mass Effect 2 and the Uncharted series, I decided to give it a shot. and now, I've actually grown to like the Gears of War series quite a bit! which, seriously, is something I never saw coming. next thing you know, I'll be playing Halo, and you'll be all, "wtf Josh is playing Halo" and I'll be all "I KNOW WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH".

I played Kingdom Hearts to completion twice the year it came out. The second time I completed every sidequest. I was really excited for the release of Kingdom Hearts 2. I had just started college when it came out, and I couldn't afford it at the time, but I was still reading about what everyone thought about it on here. And all of the criticisms I realized could be directly applied to the first Kingdom Hearts.

In retrospect - just thinking about it - I really started to dislike it. I'd never disliked something before just by thinking about it. If anyone remembers Highwind's essay about Family Guy and how he didn't realize his distaste for it until American Dad came out, it's kind of like that.

I have let the weeaboos ruin Kingdom Hearts for me.

Kingdom Hearts was perfectly capable of ruining itself without the help of weaboos.
