In this thread, we talk about films

I know a lot of other movie topics get derailed by discussion of completely different films/directors, and I thought it might be a decent idea to have a thread to discuss films that we've seen that are not upcoming or recent theatrical releases. Meaning, discussion on films that would not otherwise warrant their own topic.

So, yeah, logged into Netflix for the first time in a while, and saw that Gaspar Noe's Enter the Void was listed as a new release. I'd previously read a few blurbs about it, and was amazed that it was even on there, and even more amazed when it was over that it did not seem to be censored in any way.

I hate to use the words "audacious" and "hypnotic" at the risk of sounding pretentious, but really, those are the two words that immediately spring to mind. If I had to describe it to those who've not seen it, it reminded me of being in Room 23 from LOST for two and a half hours, but add copious amounts of sex (as in, almost pornography) and drugs (DMT is a big one here), with recurring themes of incest, breastfeeding, and voyeurism. Yup...typical Gaspar Noe film.

His M.O. as a director seems to be to push the envelope as far as it can go without ripping it to shreds. I'm not sure if I was more disturbed and/or unsettled by this than I was by Noe's I Stand Alone. Probably the latter. But those two make Irreversible look like an ABC Family made-for-TV movie.

I'm not sure that I would consider his films "good" per se, but they are worth watching, and I give him credit for making purposely polarizing films. I know for a fact that there are people that despise this film, and think it is pornographic trash, but really, it seems to me to be a very postmodern, neon-drenched take on OOBEs, consciousness traveling, and reincarnation.

Never before have I seen a film *** SPOILERS ***
that almost never shows the main character's face for the entirety of the film (Thomas in Love does this as well, but for completely different reasons), shows the bloody aftermath of a fresh abortion, and shows a money shot from an internal POV.
    *** END SPOILERS ***

As I said, if nothing else, it's audacious as hell, and I applaud him for getting away with it.

If this is too much for the Free Forum, I'm sorry, and please edit, Mora or Valk. Merely describing a film.

    So let's talk about film!

I recently saw Death Proof. It seemed like it dragged on too much and the climax wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be. Enemy of the State is a good movie!

perversion i dont see why ANYONE would want to see that movie and i think you should tone it down for some pavilionites gentler preferences. i myself are happy with lord of the rings, any starwars except the clonewars and MARVEL

but yes tone it down please, and if i wasenr looking at indecent pictures all night i might have been shocked.

Wait... So, you were offended by words despite looking at porn all night?

Perv there is nothing that needs to be "toned down." Don't listen to Spirit of Fate and his prudish sensibilities.

"might have been shocked." Good gravy.

I recently caught Home of the Giants on cable. It's the only thing Haley Joel Osment has been in for the last five years besides voicing Sora. He plays a high school kid who's best friends with the star of the basketball team. This being rural Indiana, high school basketball is the most important thing to everyone everywhere. His friend has a creepy older brother who just got out of jail and comes up with a scheme to rob this alleged drug dealer. The job goes sour, as these thing tend to do, and the drug dealer stars looking for revenge. Pretty good little crime drama! Different that what would expect. It's no Brick, but then what is?

Strangely, it came on right after Tommy and the Cool Mule in which Ice-T voices a "cool" mule who helps a little boy save his farm from an evil Kevin Sorbo. It's no Racing Stripes, but then what is?

I really wanna get The Double Life of Veronique on Blu-Ray. The movie is far and away one of the best I've ever seen. The way it tries to express something that cannot be verbalized is stupendous, and the lead actress' performance is probably one of my favorite performances of all time. It's also so warm and beautifully shot... everyone should see it.

I recently saw White Buffalo with Charles Bronson. The period appropriate racism was more than just a little unsettling, but all-in-all it was a good Bronson film.

You got a free month of Instant Watch? Not everything is on Instant Watch. It's mostly TV and catalog titles from studios. There's a lot of GREAT material on there, enough so that I have over 200 titles in my instant queue, so I'm wondering what sort of movies you're wanting to watch that you're not finding.

For whatever my opinion is worth, I wholeheartedly second this sentiment. I also think that the Trois Couleurs trilogy is necessary viewing for anyone who who would call themselves a "film buff."

Some wonderful person has put the best movie I've ever seen, A Man Escaped up on Youtube. The DVD's been out of print for years, so here's your chance to watch it. What were you going to do with that hour and a half anyways? Play a videogame? Yeah, like I said: best movie.

As Loki (damn your screenname reminding me of a character from Kenichi...) said, Perv, nevermind him. We're for the most part a mature crowd (although we do get a little goofy), you know this, Spirit of Fate will learn it.

I myself am supposed to see Robin Hood: Men In Tights or something along those lines. As part of a deal. My friend promised me he'd loan me the entire series of this one anime called Steel Angel Kurumi for me to watch. But he found out I'd never seen the movie I mentioned, and he loves this movie, so he wants me to see it, and then I will be allowed to borrow the anime series.

I think it's a pretty sweet deal. I get to watch something interesting so I can watch something else that is also interesting.

Well, I don't know how they handle trials these days. Was it Instant Watch-only or were you promised discs to be mailed? Have you tried going to their website and adding a disc to your queue?
