I love their work, so I'm eager to hear this new album. It's interesting that people are putting out new releases on vinyl. I have an LP of Kid A, and it sounds awesome.

      King of limbs?

C'mon guys, the overrated pretentious rock band hole has been filled, Arcade Fire just won the Grammy for album of the year!

        Overrated in your head, maybe.

Yes, I am just stating my opinion, but I'll be surprised if they're still relevant 10-20 years from now. Awards shows don't seem to be too great of a determinant for historical relevance (Forest Gump over Pulp Fiction & Shawshank, Shakespeare in Love over Private Ryan)

Wait, are we saying that Radiohead or Arcade Fire is overrated?

Because I'm more inclined to agree with the latter. If it's the former, it's blasphemy.

For whatever reason, music seems to be the most subjective popular medium. Lots of TV, video game, and movie critics can GENERALLY agree (not completely mind you and there are always exceptions) on the general quality of what they write about. I mean, in the Grammys, you have musical genres that fill stadiums in other countries that aren't even mentioned during a show covering all music...and not just ticket sales, but different music critics for that genre of music. I mean, I can't even find Blind Guardian's "At The Edge Of Time" even mentioned in Rolling Stone, but it's listed in the top 5 of the year in metal publications.

Basically what I'm saying is that I find what people disagree the most on is musical tastes, and everyone thinks the others have idiotic tastes.

Music's been around longer than any of those other art forms, though, so it's diverged into so many different genres and subgenres and sub-subgenres... It allows people to get highly granular in their tastes, which in turn makes it more difficult to relate to another person's taste in music because even within a genre, it can be splintered into dozens of distinctly different twists on the format.

I disregarded everything you said after you said Blind Guardian's cheesefest deserved any sort of real award. Coming from someone who used to listen to metal exclusively, it's like saying Transformers 2 is movie of the year.

Also, for whatever reason, I've never been able to get into Raidohead, but I keep trying. I keep trying. And, once again, coming from someone who isn't even a fan, you're delusional if you don't think they'll be relevant twenty years from now.

But really, feel no need to be validated by the grammys, or rolling stone, or really any publications list of top albums. You like what you like man. Even if it is something really gay like Blind Guardian.

I, too, have never been a fan of Radiohead. And I usually like " the weird stuff".

Alice Cooper doesn't count as "weird stuff", Funk.

Taken on its own it does come off pretentious, but the record MAY be named after this oak in Savernake Forest, England - which is actually pretty amazing:

Monstrous, defeated by the weight of its own limbs grotesquely trying to spread in every direction... a little like today's world?

I'd add that music has direct access to our emotions like no other art form. People feel the need to "agree" intellectually with a novel, a play, a film (if they're appreciating it as art and not merely entertainment) but music tends to surpass the cerebral making the listener feel something before they even realize it. Musical taste therefore is highly individual because it appeals to each person's emotional being, which is uncontrollably, undeniably unique.
