    Memorable game endings(Spoilers)

I just finished replaying Metro 2033, after having read the novels, and I have to admit that its one of my favorite game endings.

The game touches on the vicious cycle of violence, and how one can stop it. The game features two endings, the 'bad' ending(which is canonical with the novels) where you end up nuking the 'Dark Ones'. The good ending requires you to be considerably more involved with the game, via talking with NPCs and listening to the story.

Best part of the ending is the trippy stone maze you have to traverse.

Anyone else have a favorite game ending?

    And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope

Lufia 2's ending. I doubt enough people have played the game to appreciate it, but its one of the saddest endings in VGs IMO. (Also sad because its the end of one of the greatest RPGs ever)

My only problem is that outside of Erim, and possibly Gates, the other two Sinistrals do not have their characters adequately developed.

I was gonna say this, but I guess you beat me to it. The ending is incredibly sad, but the DS remake got rid of that ending.

Also, I'm a sucker for any game that treats you to beautiful music at the end (like Lufia 2). The song that sticks out in my mind right now is from the ending of Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete.

                Nope.

The final level in Braid still gives me chills. Got a few watching it right now.

Lufia 2 had a good ending, but the original's ending was superior in every way emotionally.

                      I'm with Josh on RDR.

                      Neir.

                      Shadow of the Colossus.

                      Dragon Quest VIII secret ending.

                      Final Fantasy IX.

and I hate to agree with American Hero, but Snake Eater's ending sends chills down my spine.

                        So many of them...hmm...

Metal Gear Solid 1 was awesome.

Can't think of much else right off the top of my head.

The Jade Empire "voluntary death" ending. Simply because it exists. Also, that game does have the best end credits this side of Portal. That Bring Down the Sky DLC for Mass Effect 1 was almost worth it just for the "punch a mountain in space" reference to Jade's credits.

As far as actual endings, I dunno. Chrono Trigger for variety. KotOR because even though it was short and not that original, it was the proper sort of SW ending we hadn't seen at that point in...what, 20-some years? EarthBound for sheer length and interactivity. Tactics for best everything.

                            Wild Arms 4.

                            *** SPOILERS ***
All of the characters in the game represent a different perspective of growing up. The kid who's eager to be a grown-up, the girl in the throes of pubescence who is afraid to grow up, the teenager who thinks he's more grown-up than he actually is, and the young woman who is just coming of age. The game can get really ANIME about what becoming an adult means, but it never becomes flippant, irrelevent or fetshizing of childhood like so many other games and anime.

The American Graffiti style epilogue shows that childhood has to end, and adulthood is just another part of the awesomeness that is life. Considering the crazy acrobatics and sci-fi baloney that was going on throughout the game, the end is so mellow and shockingly, pleasantly realistic.

                            *** END SPOILERS ***

Speaking of realism, I can't think of a Nintendo game ending more mature than Hotel Dusk.

                            *** SPOILERS ***
Not in terms of racy subject material or anything. Just in terms of what it means to be an adult in the real world. You can still be a nice guy, you can help people with their problems, they can really respect and admire you when at first they wouldn't give you the time of day, and you can ride into the sunset with the pretty girl... but you'll never know all of the answers. The guy you're looking for will always just be out of reach. You might be able to figure out what happened, but even if you look for an explanation on your own, you'll never really know why.
                            *** END SPOILERS ***

there's a reason this is my favorite game of all time, without question.
