    Stem Cell therapy Cream

Last night, I saw the latest product to defy aging. It seems that scientists have found a way to use Stem Cells to "De-age" a person's face. No botox, no implants, but honest to God stem cells.

I think this might be one of the rare cases of people inventing something that doesn't have side effects worse than the thing being delt with. However, I can predict that there might be a "controversy" around this product. Some people might make the absurd claim that you'd be "wearing dead babies on your face".

What is thinking you guys, pavilion?

To my knowledge, no consumer product has(or even can) contain totipotent stem cells. Sounds fake, do you have a link? It wouldn't be the first time commercials have lied.

Notice that they make no claim that their product contains stem cells. The claim that they make is that the product "Awakens your stem cells in order to generate new skin cells" - i.e. it will somehow activate your existing stem cells to create more youthful-looking skin.

So, it's just a marketing gimmick. Slathering raw stem cells on your face, or injecting yourself with them, is just asking for cancerous tumors to develop anyway.

EDIT: And I was really looking forward to the zombie apocalypse too.

Only one website cited actual ingredients:

                  Phyko-AI-PF
                  Mitostime
                  Seractin

                  The first two are extracts from Algae;
Phyko-ai-pf being a fancy name for hydrolyzed Alginic acid. Its used in cooking as a thickening agent, and in dentistry for temporary casts.

Mitostime is from a different Algae, and is akin to yeast extract.

Seractin I've never heard of, and a quick glance through my whimis didn't have any hits. Looking through my paper databases yielded no results. This leads me to believe that its similar to the above products: bull****.

Edit: In general, I fully support stem cell research.

Also, people automatically assume all stem cells are from unborn embryos. The ones used for genetic research to possibly cure diseases and whatnot ARE embryonic stem cells (which come/came mostly from fertilization clinics who would either flush, burn, or throw away the unneeded embryonic matter anyway). This is because those stem cells are more easily engineered into whichever type of cells are needed. Human adults have stem cells, but as those are already formed, they are much harder (if not impossible) to engineer to another type.

I personally think that all aborted embryoes should be used for stem cell research. They might as well be put to good use, right?

                        Re: Stem Cell therapy Cream

Its a contentious issue, and the problem stems from our definition of 'human'. When does a bundle of cells stop being a bundle of cells and become a thinking human?

The religous right thinks it occurs at conception. Others shortly before/after birth. Others think that being a human isn't grown, but learned over years after birth(concious memory doesn't occur until age 2-4).

On top of this, there are different kinds of stem cells. Pluripotent, Multipotent and Totipotent, is the major divison. Pluripotent means they can differentiate into any germ layer cell, Multipotent means they can differentiate only into certain lineages(eg 7 types of blood cells, but not into anything else), and Totipotent means differentiation into any kind of cell can be induced.

As of last year, we can induce some already differentiated cells to return to multipotency or pluripotency. Effectively turning back the clock, using expression vectors and some fancy genetic manipulation.

                        edit:
