    This is great...

First, I received my cousin's Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) from my cousin one night. The next night, it doesn't work for me. Every time I put a game in it and press the power button, the light flashes. Now what do I do? I don't want to ditch it. This sucks.

Is this your first time playing an old NES? Then here are some suggestions.

    1) Blow into the cartridge. Try not to spit in it in the process.
    2) Jiggle the cartridge around inside the system (not while it's turned on!) until you find the sweet spot.

The NES doesn't work for you. You work for the NES.

      Congratulations on your acquisition.

To master the Power On will require finesse, skill, talent and patience.

        Mostly patience.

I find that if I push the game down, with the label end of the cart right up against the lip of the system (so it scrapes it a bit going down) all my games work fine.

I'll give it a try everyone.

Edit: It worked! Thank you, everyone!

Whenever anything is wrong with a cartridge system, blowing on it is always a go-to strategy. And then if it fails, you fall back on the more universal method for dealing with any recalcitrant electronics: give it a good smack or two.

Nah, that only works for old TVs and radios.

Incorrect, my good sir/madam! My previous desktop's twilight months saw it develop an issue where it would begin to rattle, signifying that it was preparing to shut itself off. But, a good thwack on the top of the computer would frequently delay this occuring for some time. No smack, no delay.

Doesn't a rattling computer simply mean that you need to clean the dust off the fans?

Apparently this one had some sort of hard drive issue. Or so it was diagnosed later, at least.

Big problem, you guys. It didn't work. Now this really sucks.

Get another NES, or a decent clone NES.
