    Stealing from idiots

Here's a method to steal items from NPCs who aren't too high on "INT".

For an NPC, in their event code, have a decision branch with 2 choices; "Talk", and "Steal". Under Talk, you get a normal NPC message, but under Steal, the Player character says "Hey, what's that over there?". The NPC responds by saying "Huh?", and rotates away from facing the player character. Next, play the "paying money" sound effect, add an item to the player's inventory, and show a message saying "Successfully stole so-and-so."

Now, if you put a Value Conditional branch under the Steal option, after you've stolen an item, increase/decrease a variable by 1. Later, when you try to steal again, you'll find that the NPC doesn't have anything else to steal.

How are you planning on using the INT stat, again?

If it is below a certain level, success...if above, failure?

Uh, the INT bit was a joke. Since INT stands for "Intelligence", I meant the NPCs were stupid.

Well, if you want the stealing to depend on INT, you could assign specific amounts to many different variables (1 for each NPC) that equals a specific "INT score". Then, in each NPC's coding, see whether that person's INT is "> 50" or "<51" If it's over 50, you successfully steal without being noticed. If it's below 51, the NPC notices you're stealing from them, and the NPC calls over the Police, who try to subdue you in a fight. If you win, you keep the item, and the NPC runs away (disappears) until you leave town and return again (this is set up in other events). If you lose, you lose the item.

As an optional add-on, the Police could drag your ass to the city jail, where you lose 3000 Gold as Bail to get out.

But then why go through the INT step at all, since the stat itself can't be compared to anything in a branch and the stat itself is useless outside of battle? I'd recommend just using the Val-Cond branch alone.

This system has already been implemented in a couple of RM3 games - Obright's own Tree of Life comes to mind. You even got to dress up in a thief costume and everything. Very cool.

                LOL! Sorry man.

Most people wouldn't assume (wrongly) that you meant to copy the INT stat, and use it to determine the outcome of the stealing event...but I actually did that (sort of), so I didn't realize you were kidding.

But it made sense...if people are smart then they'll be harder to steal from.

                Anyway...

Yeah, not seeing why you're getting frustrated. If each NPC only has one level of INT, and it's either above or below the necessary level of 50, there's no point ever using "Int", whether that's the actual INT stat or a variable that tracks their non-stat-based "intelligence". You could simply place in each NPC's code whether the check passes or fails against that NPC.

I never should have said "aren't too high on INT".
