Got to say hi to John K~

    Yes indeed.

John Kricfalusi was hosting a viewing of some rare Spumco cartoons (and other stuff) at the Alamo Drafthouse tonight. They opened with "Man's Best Friend," one of my all-time favorites.

After the show (which was awesome), I got him to sign one of my Ren cels and the show booklet. I showed him the pictures of me, him and Jim Smith from my visit to Spumco in 1994, and he was pretty shocked. He laughed and said "wow, I actually remember that!"

I told him it was a real pleasure to see him again and I'd continue to support his work in the future. He was the same very nice, very normal individual I'd met over ten years ago, when I was but a wee ignorant loser.

That being said, they will have a new DVD out soon, which I encourage you to buy. Some of the stuff we watched was not going to be aired on spike TV (too racy) but was incredibly hilarious.

Fun fact: I was the only person in the entire crowd that cheered when he said he was a huge three stooges fan.

Do you have pictures? Please post pictures.

That would be awesome to compare the old pictures when you were a kid to today, standing with the same person.

YEAH RIGHT. I am the most pathetic loser in this town. Good things rarely happen to me, you've got it all wrong!

Honestly, I would've loved to get pictures, but it was not meant to be.

As for the 3 stooges- both of the new Ren and Stimpy shorts had plot elements, sayings/mannerisms and endings ripped right out of various stooges shorts (this isn't anything new, they've done it since the first NICK episodes).

In "naked beach party" they end up riding off into the sunset on the backs of dolphins, akin to the stooges riding off on the backs of bulls (can't remember the name of the short, but it was a Shemp one). "The Altruists" plot was stooge-related (John introduced it as being influenced by several stooges shorts) and the ending was from "Boobs in Arms," where they fly off into the sunset on the back of a missle that shoots right under them. Hell, they even used the actual theme/ending music both times! I really got a kick out of that.

Woot! Sounds like you had a really great time, Nix. Glad to hear it.

Too bad you didn't get pictures, but at least you've got the signed cel!

It was such a BLAST! I still can't believe we got tickets, since all four shows sold out.

Nixon, if the most pathetic losers in your town get to meet John K, on several occasions no less, I'm moving.

Ren and Stimpy is the Three Stooges of the 90s. It's no wonder it's got such an adoring fan base. A shame you didn't get pictures though.

No big deal, I could tell John was really tired, and I didn't want to bother him.
He looked almost EXACTLY the same as he did over ten years ago, which backs up my theory that cartoonists never really change, they just get ugly and older.

I'm very proud to say that I was perhaps the only person in the entire audience that knew what he looked like. While everyone was still getting seated (we were there early as all hell), I noticed him casually walking around, checking out the crowd. I watched him until he noticed me staring (couldn't help it ) and then I gave him a slight nod behind a very sheepish smile. He smiled and walked off, and I didn't see him again until the show started.

I wanted to ask him a question during the Q&A, but idiots kept asking him stupid and inane questions instead. There were some decent ones, but most of the people there were not die-hard Spumco fans. Hell, one person asked him the same question he'd just answered, but worded it in another way. What a waste!

Bah to the people who cared little for the stooges and kudos to you!

I'm a big stooge fan meself. Seen all of the Curly shorts and most of everything else.

If only I can find those particular shorts that weren't released on video...

I recently bought the DVD set of Ren and Stimpy Seasons Three and a Half-ish. But after watching the commentary to Stimpy's Cartoon, i kinda got a little depressed over how Nickolodeon was to Spumco.

The Spumco guys/gals like the stooges so much they made some merchandise for them. More specifically, the incredible figures/dolls they made of the boys. I had a picture of my set but I think I deleted it from my photobucket account a while back. There are two versions, the small and large size.

I've seen most of the Curly shorts, and at least 50-75% of the Shemp and Joe Besser ones. Since a lot of the Shemp ones were simply remakes of earlier Curly shorts, and the Besser ones just sucked ass, I don't really care to try to get them all. In fact, I'm very picky about the Curly episodes I have on DVD or VHS. I've been trying to get the best copies since sometimes even the official Columbia DVDs can be made from very poor quality prints. I'm still missing a lot of good ones...

Mind sharing some of your favorite shorts?

Here are a few of mine:

                              False Alarms
                              Ants in the Pantry
                              Hoi Polloi
                              Dizzy Detectives
                              A Plumbing they did go
                              Men in Black

EDIT- Spumco and John K. were treated like crap by the network. Worse than usual, I'd say. I can only imagine the pain of watching two of your creations be turned into pure crap by right before your eyes, and by one of your closest friends, no less.
