The best console EVAR-Week Ten: NES vs PS2

Edit: Results will be posted at the bottom of this first post.

So here's a fun Pavilion activity for all of us to engage in. You know how on random gaming sites like GameFAQs, they have stuff like Best Game of All Time? And the winners are always the most popular ones whose ballot boxes get spammed the most? We're gonna try something a bit different here to determine the best game system of all time, as determined by the esteemed RPG Maker Pavilion community.

Instead of everyone spamming votes for their console of choice, I'm gonna make it a bit more interesting. I will put up a poll every week to vote on the best system of each console gen (there were 7 total, according to Wikipedia). Each vote a console receives will be worth one point. But if you truly feel passionate about a given console, or think that it did not get a fair shake, you can make a post describing why you think it is the worthy console from its particular gen. Well thought-out posts will receive an additional 1, 3 or 5 points added to the votes for that console.

I'm going to lay out a bracket, and the winning console from each gen will square off against the winner from another. Now, to make this fair and equitable, I'm going to ask for two more "judges" to rate posts arguing for a particular console's relevance so my own bias does not show up. Each post made in defense of a particular console will be given a score of 1, 3 or 5 at the end of the week's deadline by myself and the two other judges. The results will be added together and divided by 3, and rounded to the nearest whole number. I reserve the right to ignore any Duel-esque posts in defense of a console (eg-I like the Sega Genesis).

The bracket will be as follows:

I'm gonna start voting today for the first gen. Voting will end on Saturday, whereupon voting for the seventh gen will begin. Every generation aside from the first, which gets a bye in its first week, will have a full week in which to vote or post, and each week will alternate from oldest to newest, as per the brackets.

If you wish to be one of the other two judges, and are a regular here, post to let me know before this Sunday. On Sunday, the posts (if any) will be judged, and the results will be posted.

Links for each console gen are posted below.

So, in week one, we have the Magnavox Odyssey, the Odyssey 2, Atari's Pong, Coleco's Telstar, and Nintendo's Color TV Game (whatever THAT is).

Vote and/or post. The winner gets a bye week, and will go up against whichever console comes out on top of the fourth and fifth gen.

EDIT: I'm getting the first gen out of the way early, and only giving it a half a week for voting, precisely because most of us have never played these older systems.

And a mistake has cropped up in the poll, which I cannot edit...the Odyssey 200 should in fact be listed as Odyssey 2 (with the 2 smaller and above the word Odyssey, as in, mathematically, "Odyssey squared.")

Re: The best game console of all time (Pavilion Edition)

I'm not really sure. The link to the wikipedia page for the first gen of consoles showed one, though, so I'm assuming it exists.

And I know this first week will not get much response at all. I'm hoping next week (the current gen) will get some more participation and responses.

How this will work is, the first 7 weeks will be dedicated to determining a winner per console gen. Then there will be 3 more weeks to determine the final four (again, 1st generation getting a bye...I'm well aware that the winner of 4th/5th gen will have a lopsided defeat over 1st gen), 2 weeks to determine the finals, and then one final week for the "championship." This should take us until the first weekend of March. I'm not sure when March Madness is, but this'll conclude probably right before that begins, based on a 13 week timeframe.

soooo... like a GameFAQS poll? because my answer for every question is Final Fantasy VII, if that's the case.

No. Not like a GameFAQs poll. In fact, I debated calling this the "Anti-GameFAQs Edition" instead of the Pavilion Edition.

Reason being, if you'd read the first post, yes, I will be taking number of votes into account. However, if you make a post describing what you feel makes any given console in a given generation the best, or likewise, make a similar post comparing and contrasting consoles of differing gens once we get into the actual matchups, these will be given additional points to add to that console's total.

What this means is, this has the capability to get really crazy. Instead of a popularity contest, and depending on how many people actually vote, if a concerted effort was made amongst a few members to make a few convincing posts demonstrating that, say, Pong was actually a better console than the SNES (if it indeed came down to those being the winners of their respective brackets), and voter turnout is not that big, it would realistically have a chance to win.

This, in turn (I'm hoping) might make more people vote and/or make convincing arguments the other way. In any case, I specifically designed this as being completely unlike a GameFAQs poll/winners' bracket. 1 vote is only worth one point. A convincing post, on the other hand, may possibly be worth 5 points. As I said, depending on what people do with it, it has the capacity to get crazy.

Mostly, I'm just hoping people have fun with it (I know this first week is gonna be a rough week to start with), and I'm hoping to take a page out of Maijo's book and do some Pavilion Survivor-esque updates periodically to add some "drama" to the proceedings.

Can we argue to take points away from a particular console instead of giving points to any of the others?

I kinda don't know why we're bothering with the first gen. Few here among us will have played any of the consoles and even fewer would vote for them against any of the later generations. It just seems that this is just a concession to OCD tendencies to include EVERY console. In that case, what about portables? Will the Game.com be included, for completists' sake? :V

Click the links in the first post. The consoles pictured will be added to the polls. If there's one not pictured that you think should be added, let me know the week before, and I'll add it to the poll.

Portables can have their own poll, where it's a big waste of time and the DS wins at the end.

There's no question the DS is the best portable ever made (in my opinion, anyway), at least until we see what the 3DS is gonna do, release-wise.

I'm not sure if you were joking or serious, but I believe the links list handhelds, and I'm inclined to include them with the voting. Because realistically, a handheld just might have a chance to beat out a console in a given console gen, depending on how voting goes and/or how persuasive any arguments made on its behalf might be.

In that case, include the iPhone.

The iPhone is not a dedicated gaming platform. It's a Swiss Army knife.

Is that really a road you want to go down?

Is the iphone categorically different from the PS3 or PCs? Aside from portability.
