    Your game of the year?

Do we have one of these? Do we?

I didn't see it. (I probably posted in it if we do, I'm retarded like that)

    SPEAK.

    per console, genres, overall, whatever.

Re: Your game of the year?

This post pretty much summarizes my games of the year and for what reasons.

Quite honestly though, 2010 was amazing, how can anyone think different with games like-

    Red Dead Redemption
    Mass Effect 2
    God of War 3
    Nier
    Dragon Quest IX
    Halo Reach
    Black Ops
    Fable III
    Bayonetta
    Bad Company 2
    3D Dot Game Heroes
    Dance Central
    Super Mario Galaxy 2
    Monster Hunter Tri
    Goldeneye
    Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
    Birth by Sleep
    Peacewalker

The ones above are my favorites this last year, and this year looks to be pretty awesome as well, starting with LittleBigPlanet 2 releasing this month.

Aaaahhhh I love being a geek!

I don't see Heavy Rain on that list~

      It's my choice.

Heavy Rain is your top Xbox 360 fighting game of the year.

              Red Dead Redemption.

I haven't played anything else that's come out this year.

Because it's more of the same and sequel city, that's why.

Red Dead Redemption-Sequel; GTA in the old West
Mass Effect 2-Sequel; Another refinement of KotOR
God of War 3-Sequel; QTEs plus gore=/=GOTY material
Nier-What's this? A new IP?? How did THIS make this list??
Dragon Quest IX-Sequel; Another DQ game
Halo Reach-Sequel; Another FPS series treading water
Black Ops-Sequel; Another FPS series sucking in water and drowning
Fable III-Sequel; Another example of Peter Molyneaux delivering empty promises
Bayonetta-Wait...a game that takes the DMC formula, makes the main character female, and cranks up the over-the-top attitude and stylishness to ten? AND it's a new IP?? Wow. This REALLY does not belong on this list!
Dance Central-New IP; Harmonix's last gasp under Viacom is a worthy game utilizing a flawed peripheral. Benefit of the doubt given here.
Super Mario Galaxy 2-Sequel; YAWNNNNN. Another Mario sequel
Monster Hunter Tri-Sequel; WOW! Another Monster Hunter game!
Goldeneye-Remake; Take a game almost 15 years old and suck the fun right out of it
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom-New characters, but same formula...I'm gonna give this one the benefit of the doubt as well.
Birth by Sleep-Sequel; KINGDOM HEARTS...'nuff said
Peacewalker-Sequel; Kojima probably realized how bad MGS4 really was, and decided to apologize by making this game.

So it appears 2010 is the year that a bunch of long-in-the-tooth franchises perfected their tired formula, and younger-in-the-tooth franchises rehashed more of the same. Yeah...this really sounds like a top-tier year to me!

                    Not. Even. Close.

Mass Effect 2-Sequel; Another refinement of KotOR
                    Someone should slap you.

Dragon Quest IX-Sequel; Another DQ game
                    I mean, really. Slap.

Super Mario Galaxy 2-Sequel; YAWNNNNN. Another Mario sequel
Actually, wait. Punch. Yes, another Mario sequel, but that has NEVER been a bad thing.

Seriously, PLAY the games you mentioned, or at least do some research so you can appear to be making some kind of informed judgement.

Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City-Another redundant JRPG SEQUEL that tries to resurrect 3D dungeon crawlers, a genre lazy and never good to begin with, with a recycled loli character roster. A game caterable to pedophiles and the socially awkward.

I'd obviously know, since I've never played this game before. :V

                        I played 4 of them.

I'm sure Mass Effect 2 is the bee's knees. I'm sure RDR probably has a good story and characters. I'm sure DQIX is another well-done DQ game. And I'm sure Mario Galaxy 2 is another well-done Mario game. I'm quite confident of all these things.

My point was not that any of the games mentioned were particularly bad. Most, if not all the games Biggie mentioned are probably well worth playing by fans of their respective genres. My point was more that I'm really tired of seeing sequel after sequel after sequel. Yes, they might be well-made sequels, and they may be enjoyable, but the video game landscape is getting more and more bloated by the "safe bets" and is more and more coming to resemble the Hollywood formula.

If I can make a few comparisons...The Expendables is to CoD as Chronicles of Narnia is to Fable III as True Grit is to RDR. There's a reason something like The Expendables and the Narnia movies are rarely on year-end Best lists, nor are ever nominated for the major Academy Awards. True Grit probably WILL be, and from what I've read, might be worthy. RDR also is probably worthy of GOTY.

The problem is, there do not seem to be any gaming equivalents to Inception or 127 Hours or The Social Network this year. You know, games that try to do something different. Games that do not follow a tired formula. Games that do not bank on a huge budget and/or brand-name name recognition to draw in all those afraid to take a chance.

So again, I'm not saying that the games listed above are bad or not worth playing. I'm merely stating that it seems the industry has begun to settle into complacency if these are the best you can dredge up to contend for GOTY.

EDIT: As for Biggie, I enjoyed EOIII, yes. I'll be the first to admit that it's very well-done, but does not break any new ground. I enjoyed WKC. I can admit that it's an enjoyable distraction and nothing more. I'm currently enjoying Atelier Rorona, and will again be the first to admit that it's nothing new or earth-shattering. WOW! They FINALLY decided to join the current gen and use 3D models instead of sprites! How groundbreaking!!

Sadly, if these are the three best games I've played all year (and they are as of this point), that really does not say a lot for 2010 in my eyes. On a whole, 2010 seems slightly above average to me.

If sequels/remakes/reboots in the video game industry were uniformly disappointing as they were in the film industry, I'd be upset, too.

                          But they aren't so I'm not. :3

                            Here's the thing.

OBVIOUS MODE: Those are the ONLY games you've played all year!

MORE DETAIL MODE: The only titles that appeal to you are the NICHEST of the NICHE, which would be no proble, usually, but based on that -- and the fact that every recommendation thrown your way slides off your back like a puck on ice -- you'll never be the one I, or anyone, should go to for an entire summation of year of video games. Especially a year like the one that just ended.

That's like going to Caciss for an opinion on video games. That guy hates video games. (lolol i love you buddy)

Oh wait, not Caciss. I meant Yahtzee. I guess. Which one plays more video games?

                            AND:

                            from what I've read
I see this phrase pop up a lot in your posts. Maybe not those EXACT WORDS, but definitely the feeling that you base a lot of your calls (trolls) on hearsay and conjecture. Rarely do you have actual experience with whatever you pass judgement on. And if you do, it's usually five minutes worth of playtime or something silly.

NOT THAT I'M TRASHING YOU ON YOUR TASTE, GO FOR IT THAT'S WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT

I mean, the game I'm looking forward to most this year has a bullet point that basically says WATCH HER CLOTHES GET TORN APART and you can dress her up in a maid outfit, and my GOTY has a part where you get to photograph an underage torture victim in her undies

                            ...

I don't even know what I'm saying anymore. This is what you do to me.

                            ...

                            BALLS.

I kind of agree with Perv in the abstract.

But just because a game isn't original or groundbreaking doesn't mean it isn't good or fun.

I understand criticizing the good games for lack of innovation (notice that they're still good games). But praising mediocre games just because they're innovative is worse.
