    Game of the Decade?

If you don't visit gamefaqs, they've been having this GotD contest now for the last several weeks.

The final four? FFX, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Fallout 3, and Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Granted, all these games are fun, but I just don't see them as being legitmate game of decade type games. Outside of maybe Fallout 3, no one is going to be talking about these games in the year 2020.

IMO, the real game of the decade is probably GTA3. The sheer number of games that have been heavily influenced by it since its release is astounding. It turned Rockstar from a no-name company into a titan, and got them more publicity than probably any other non-first party developer. I would give an honorable mention to World of Warcraft and Halo 1.

GTA3 lost early. That contest is five kinds of stupid.

I agree that it should have won though.

It, like their Character Battle, is simply a popularity contest. ****, FF7 would probably win if it weren't made before 2000. I'm pleasantly surprised Fallout 3 didn't lose to a Zelda/FF/Kingdom Hearts game already.

I'm with Riotsword, this is kind of bogus but typical of Gamefaqs. I don't even play World of Warcraft but I would say that is Game of the Decade material considering its "longevity", I guess.

Final Fantasy X vs. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. So far FFX is winning, and the winner will go against Smash Bros. Brawl for title of Best Game of the Decade.

                In other words...

Going by my personal favorite, I'd say KotOR.

As for influence and overall impact on the industry, I would definitely agree with GTA 3. Not just because it fathered an entire genre in much the same way that DOOM did with FPS titles in the 90s, but because the mature and (relatively) realistic nature of its story and content has permeated the industry on every level. Granted, there were games like that before, but most were on the PC. And besides, it's usually not about doing something first, just doing it in a way that it catches on with everyone else.

HL 2 beaten by Prime? So wrong. But also so unsurprising, every contest on that site ends up being brought down by Nintendo fanboys or people who simply vote for everything Final Fantasy related.

Heck yes. On top of being a god damn tight game, without RE4 we wouldn't have Gears of War and, arguably, Mass Effect as we know them.

I don't mean like no one is ever going to talk about them again, ever.

I mean more to the fact that they just weren't that signifcant, and if some critic is making a list of games that defined this decade of gaming, I wouldn't expect either title to be on there. Maybe FFX, maybe. You can make the case that FFX signalled the end of traditional RPG gaming, as it was to some extent the last great JRPG. But MM? It was little more than an expansion pack for OoT. It was a gaiden and wasn't even as long as most Zelda titles.

We've had our differences and that's ground long settled. But slapping gramma on the ass and remarking on her choice tail is more than I can abide.

I say to you, sir, make that case.

Baldurs Gate 2 didn't beat out Skies of Arcadia on the first freakin round.

While I enjoy both games, cmon!

It's Game of The Decade material as it's one of the sole contributors to the huge boom and mainstream-ness of the MMO market. Despite my own likes/dislikes of the game, it's been a huge contributor to the PC gaming market as a whole so you have to give it props.

                            Re: Game of the Decade?

If Mass Effect 2 were released in December of 2009 instead of January of this year, it would have owned the competition so badly.

I have no idea how Majora's Mask got so high. I remember a lot of people disliking it when it first came out. (I never played it, never been a huge Zelda fanboy)

SSB:Melee > SSB: Brawl - I have no idea how Brawl beat Melee.

I always find the GameFAQs voters to be quite stupid though, they seem to rally around one pick and try to get it as far as possible, and it really throws off their contest results.

I don't mean great as a synonym for good. I mean it more in its traditional sense. Like Hitler was a great man. Not a good man, just one achieving distinction and recognition.

FFX was really the last time a JRPG fell into this category. Can you name another JRPG made afterwards that was a flagship type game?
