    I graduated, finally!

About damn time, I'm so glad to finally be done. Too bad its going to be super hard to find a job right now. Every posting here is for Nurses and C++ Programmers, which I obviously have no skill in.

University of Nebraska, Lincoln -- History Major / Psychology Minor

Thinking I might go back and get a Masters in Education at the UNL 2 year program, possibly teach middle or high school and quash our young people's dreams before they get out of hand. Still not sure though, gotta work on my resume and get some applications out first.

I'm not sure what jobs you thought would be waiting for a History major in Nebraska.

Well no crap, I didn't take the major to get a job--I took it because it was interesting.

      That was my first mistake...

Even if he would have gotten a practical degree, the odds are still against him obtaining employment(the exceptions are either medicine or the military). And if by some miracle he does, he's likely going to have to move across the country for it. There are far more job seekers than there are jobs available to employ them; the ratio is approxamately 6 unemployed people seeking every available job.

For the vast majority of the American population and from a statistical standpoint, they'd be financially better off dropping out of high school to sell crack, than daring to accumulate debt to finish college(the odds of getting caught selling dope are lower than you might think). The average college student obtains their degree with $24000 in debt, which would amount to a payment of about $350/month(depending on interest rate and other factors). Try paying not only the costs of living but also making that kind of payment on a minimum wage job at Starbucks or 7-11 once the realization sets in that your future has been outsourced to the 3rd world for less than half of what you're making at that Starbucks or 7-11. The courts often won't even let these debts be wiped away in bankruptcy court for invalids, let alone people who are healthy and capable of working.

Meanwhile, the FED just gave the banks another $600 billion last month in the form of "quantitative easing", more than all student loan debt in the U.S. combined, and the bailouts so far all added together have exceeded $9 trillion. The banks stand to collapse from not being able to reimburse investors for more than $1.6 quadrillion in fraudulent derivatives swaps, and if it comes to it, they expect taxpayers to pay every cent, even though there is nowhere near enough assets available to back such a monstrous sum.

My advice to you Blaze, given what I know of your situation, is to find a hobby you like, excel in it, and try to find a way to make money with it. Your degree is unlikely to advance your career, although it helps. Stay out of debt, if you can afford to. The Republicans AND Democrats want you to die poor, alone, and in-debt.

                Take the LSAT?

Isn't that what all history majors do?

I was looking more for "Congrats" than career advice.

Should have gotten into a trade~

Everybody has a degree in one thing or another these days, and its not the big meal ticket all the baby boomers would like you to believe it was back in their day.

But damn, if you can wire a house up, or do the plumbing or general carpentry stuff and have all your trades papers, you can tell people with their fancy degrees to shove it.

Its what I tell people to do when they dont know what they want to do.

Well in NC, anyone with a van and some tools can be called a contractor. People who don't speak any english can get jobs doing plumbing and such. I wouldn't say you would make it without getting on with a bigger company.

well whatever, having a degree is better than not having one.

                        congrats, sir!

And I disagree that it's impossible to find a job as well, if you're smart and dilligent. Let's say there's 12% unemployment. Now, think about the people back in your high school. More than 12% of them are giant unemployable retards, right? Yep. So don't worry, you're in the top percentile, you'll find work.

Having a degree saved my best friend's life. You'll be glad you have it someday.

                          Congratulations!

Exactly, and thanks! I have no student loans, if I did I would have went into something more technical--but my parents in all of their awesomeness put my sisters and I through college telling us to do what was interesting to us rather than having to pay back loans and be forced into a profession that didn't "fit" what we wanted to do. The only debt I have is $400 to my parents, so I am glad I don't have to deal with that money shiz.

I've worked the last 3 years as a IT support guy at UNL, hardware and software. My mom's friend just told me that the company her husband works for is hiring program testers full time right now. I'm going to look at it tomorrow, but I think it could be a good fit.

Also, Nebraska only has like 5.1% unemployment, so I am less screwed than some people simply based on location. If I can't find anything FT that I like, I can always go to my backup plan and get a teaching degree in less than 2 years.

Congrats! After analyzing Terr's numbers I agree that your smartest next move is to start selling crack. Good luck finding anything in your state, though.
