What do you think of MGS?

So, I wonder what you think of MGS?

I LOVED MGS1 when I first played it. The story was simple, followable, and straight to the point. However, once I played MGS2, things went downhill. The story got SOOOO complicated to the point where one has to be an all-out dedicated fan-boy just to understand it. I played MGS3 and found it to start getting a bit too comical, especially when you have villians like The Pain, The Fear, Volgin, etc. The one thing I hate about MGS is, to sum it all up, the crazy story that Hideo Kojima thought that everyone understood. If I were him, I'd go into the movie/anime business, since he's obviously a fan of sci-fi.

Onto the gameplay, I like it, other than in MGS2 where the shooting was "unstoppable" due to some pressure thing related to the PS2 technology or something like that. MGS3 was slower, however, and began to get a bit annoying.

So, to sum it up, the action is good, though I think it's time Kojima leaves the franchise to the person making Metal Gear Solid Rising, of whom stated that he wasn't going to focus so much on the story like Kojima did for all the other MGS games.

I didnt really like 3 at all, and I literally watched a movie of 4 somebody made by stringing together gameplay and cutscenes.

1 and 2 are topshelf material.

3 is the best by far because of the story. 1 is better than 2, but 2 is definitely good. 4 is weird, but great if you're a fan of the series. It's just the greatest series of games ever really. MGS3's story just blew me away, I almost cried at the end. It was great.

MGS1 was great, as was MGS3 and 4. 2 was okay, but by far the worst of them... and not just because of Raiden, but... everything.

The old MG games were good too, but I can't really compare them with the Solid games as my memories are too fuzzy on those.

Metal Gear Solid is the height of video game melodrama.

MGS2 is an amazing experience, but last time I played it I didn't have as much fun as I wanted to. All of the MGSes come up with great ideas, but I feel like they don't utilize them properly until the next installment, at which point they come up with ANOTHER new idea that isn't quite fully realized (1st person views, camoflage, whatevs).

Snake Eater's my favorite. The story is juicy without being plain crazy, there's wide range of options to deal with situations, and the easter eggs are the most plentiful. If I had to say which one was the most consistently PERFECT, it'd be the first one... or even Peace Walker.

I'm glad that in an industry that could be very homogeneous, there are guys like Kojima doing things they want to do.

Most of what I remember is the very detailed character interactions of Snake and his ear-buddies in MGS1. Despite never meeting most of them face to face in the game, you get a very good idea about who these characters are and they play very well off each other.

Amen, brother. You'd think people here didn't want personality in their games. :3

Re: What do you think of MGS?

I feel like MGS 1 edges out 3 by a hair, but both are absolutely excellent. 2 is trash. Haven't played 4, don't think I have any interest. 2 screwed the present day storyline so completely that my desire to see it continue is nil.

I think Kojima's biggest fault (although in an odd way it's also one of his strengths) is that he's compeltely unable to admit defeat. If the fans don't like a certain element of the series, it almost seems like he plays it up just to try and force affection for it down the player's throat. This is true for story notions, characters (gosh, I wonder who I could be referring to here...), gameplay mechanics, you name it. I get the feeling he isn't too big on focus groups.

That said, his general nuttiness and lack of reliable quality are just side effects of his brilliance and devotion to the craft. He's done a lot for gaming with this series, but even beside the innovation they're just darn fun to play. Except 2.

However, Kojima's involvement is not truly necessary for the games to be good. I enjoyed Portable Ops a good bit, and he wasn't in on that one.

                        This. Though I love MGS2.

I've only played 1 and 2. First time I bought 3 it got borrowed by a friend of my mom's and never returned. I repurchased it but before I could play much my second PS2 more or less became unplayable and I didn't feel like buying a third one. I'll probably get it on 3DS.

4 is on a system which I've yet to actually even see one except in a store so I obviously haven't played it.

Now that Portable Ops is $10 on PSN I might get it but I'm not sure if I should yet not having played 3.

I played about an hour of 4 once!

And about an hour of the GC remake of the first one!

I enjoyed the remake on the Gamecube. I replayed it quite a bit really.

                              I didn't enjoy 3 all that much.

And I didn't even enjoy the demo of 4 so yeah.
