    Black Swan (Perfect Blue)

I forgot about this for a bit until my memory banks were jostled a bit ago.

I had heard that Darren Aronofsky was making a movie about ballet quite some time back. Ugh.

Then I learned that Natalie Portman was the lead. Yum.

Then I saw the trailer when I went to see Let Me In, and realized that Black Swan is Aronofsky's live-action ballet version of Perfect Blue.

I learned today that he owns the rights to Perfect Blue in order to have done the Jennifer Connolly bathtub scene (and direct lift from Perfect Blue) in Requiem for a Dream. I saw Requiem about a week before its release at a preview screening, and of course noticed the lift right away. I was not aware that he owned the rights, though.

So it makes perfect sense that he'd make a film with the same themes, etc, as Perfect Blue. On imdb, people that have read the script (which Aronofsky did not write) have said that it's not a carbon copy, but there are a lot of similarities. The film has yet to be released, but the trailer HAD to be cut to bring Perfect Blue to the minds of those who have seen it.

I never claimed to be the only one to see similarities. I'm only drawing attention to this as I'm guessing more than a few people here have seen Perfect Blue (which is my favorite theatrical-length anime, and from my favorite anime director), and to let people know that, even taking Aronofsky's last few films into account, this may be worth seeing.

Trailer starts off like some drama bs, but towards the end is when it gets freaky and actually interesting.

It's the movie where Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman hook up. Presumably other things happen, for the benefit of the straight women and gay men in the audience who didn't come specifically because of the aforementioned reason.

                Natalie Portman is hardcore.

Huh? The Wrestler is my favorite Aronofsky movie.

I think it's mine too, although that's probably because I may not have seen any other Aronofsky movies. I honestly don't remember. Either way, The Wrestler was very good.

I know I was blown away the first time I saw that rap video. A gleeful destruction of her squeaky clean image.

I've not seen it, so I can't say, but I've heard that it was pretty much blatant Academy-pandering.

Also, I knew as I was typing that that The Wrestler was a favorite of yours, and figured it would provoke a comment from you.

Again, I've not seen it, so I can't say 100%, but it probably is better than Pi. I can say with a fair degree of confidence that it's probably better than The Fountain. But at least for my taste in films, I'd venture to guess that Requiem for a Dream is still better, and, in my eyes, at least, probably the best thing he'll ever do.

WHAT, The Wrestler is not Academy-pandering, it is about a big loser working at a deli, come on

I'm probably biased, seeing as I'm currently reading Bret Hart's autobiography right now.

But The Wrestler is one of the greatest films ever made :B
