Comcast went down all over New England on Sunday. We didn't know what was going on, so we tried calling them to reset our connection. A recorded voice told us to visit their website - y'know, using our Internet connection that didn't work. We were on the phone for over half an hour before giving up.
And then our roommate found out what was going on his iPhone.
Really, the only thing good about Comcast is that they have fast internet. That's about it. Everything else sucks.
Very true, if you ignore the facts that:
a) While reasonably fast, it's not nearly as fast as some other services
b) The required "Comcast Desktop Doctor" slows things down to slower rates than advertised
c) Their internet services are unreliable, and when your internet doesn't work, its speed is zero.
Sorry if I'm acting like an ass, but I just needed to get that off my chest.
Isn't this part of what the controversy was with net neutrality when we had that topic a year or so ago? Meaning, that service providers were going to be able to block sites (or in this case, services) that they didn't want you using (ie-the ones they don't have a vested financial interest in).

I thought I remembered, at times, Comcast not allowing me to connect to the Internet because it didn't think DD was installed. Maybe I remembered wrong?
Never even heard of it. I would think it would be totally optional and really, no reason for you to download it. then again, I just have a router and a network attached to it. Didn't let or need anyone to install any software to my computer.
Back when Comcast took over Road Runner in Houston, they implemented something that made your router useless, and you had to contact them to unlock the feature for an additional fee per person using the router.
We ended up finding a hack around it and I believe they eventually got rid of that restriction, but we were pretty close to switching internet providers at that point.
